Baffled by the sudden silence of their instruments, the band's lead singer, James Hetfield, joked: "Who forgot to pay the electricity bill?", adding that the backstage excuse was that the equipment "could not handle metal." The Western Cape has been plagued by power cuts in recent months, and the crowd waved their lighters until power was restored.
