The Bird and The Bee is a two way street. Band members Inara George and Greg Kurstin love short cuts and speeding up or slowing down without warning. Their self-titled first album sounds sweet enough, but it's not all loungey jazzy stuff in which case this review would end here. The Bird and The Bee are well aware that they have to spice things up to keep an occasional listener interested. "Won't you be my fucking boyfriend", asks Inara in a pleasant voice (damn those record companies who will insists to spell fuck as f*ck).
What do The Bird and The Bee sound like? Well, a lot like the soundtrack of a rather cheesy sixties TV series. There is a definite South American feel to the album, but some very welcome occasional distortion makes sure that you get the picture: it's a 21st century album after all, an album to enjoy with your friends while sipping the first of many alcoholic beverages on a late sunny afternoon.
The Bird and The Bee are on Metro Blue Records. Release date: January 23.
