Jorma Kaukonen is one of the world's most gifted acoustic guitar players. His new album Stars In My Crown is a celebration of the less-is-more concept: select a Gibson from his extensive collection and just start playing. Recorded in Nashville with his Hot Tuna fellow band member Barry Mitterhoff and seasoned veterans like Byron House on upright bass this album is a breathtaking journey through bluegrass, gospel classics and a couple of originals. Just listen to their version of Johnny Cash' When The Man Comes Around.
Flawlessly produced you get the feeling that you are in the same room with the band. If you liked his 2002 album Blue Country Heart, there's no doubt whatsoever that you will want to add Stars In My Crown to your collection pronto. I nearly fell over laughing when Rivers of Babylon came on, a song that was ruined forever by Boney M, one of the worst bands to come out of Germany. There is no way that I can listen to it without crackin' up.
Fifty years of practice have turned Jorma Kaukonen into a master of the the fingerstyle guitar. No wonder that roots music players find their way to his Fur Peace Ranch for advice, lessons and the opportunity to play in the cozy 220 seats Concert Hall.
Stars In My Crown is released on Red House Records.
