Caroline Herring crafts her songs with care. Her new album Lantana is best described as haunting Deep South Americana. She has a sharp eye for what lies beneath all the love and tenderness that seems the be subject matter of her songs if you don't listen closely enough. Paper Gown is about a 23 year old mother who drowned her sons.
Herring named her album after a "wild-looking, flowering plant that grows like crazy". It's an aptly chosen title for a collection of songs telling you tales about ordinary madness. Gothic country, indeed.
Lantana is released on Signature Sounds. Release date: March 4th.
