What if Madonna had to start all over? Would she sound like Elika, a superb electronic shoegaze duo from Brooklyn. Like hell she would. Evagelia Maravelias and Brian Wenckebach have far more musical talent than Madge. They just don't have her marketing skills.
Elika name Nico and Lou Reed among their musical influences, as well as eighties icon Pat Benatar. Their mini-labum is called Trying Got Us Nowhere, a tongue-in-cheek title that will earn them some brownie points in the cognoscenti niche. The vocals rest on a soft bed made of electronics, a pretty nifty mix of live drums and programming with a quilt of jangling guitars. Listen to this with a lounging cat on your lap. You might end up doing a little purring yourself.
Elika:
Evagelia Maravelias: vocals, keyboards, drums
Brian Wenckebach: guitar, keyboards, programming
- The Whip
- Nowhere
- To The End
- Confidence Killed My Spirit
- Let Down
- They'll Hate Us
- Eliana
