A lot of modern day listeners don't have the attention to take in a full length, so The New Up decided to release three EP's in the next 18 months. Broken Machine kicks of the series by this 21st Century New Wave band from San Francisco. With five of slightly psychedelic songs they aim to please the third generation hippies who have been enjoying their parents record collection, especially the Jefferson Airplane and eighties UK stuff.

It's a law of nature that band members crave for a place in the spotlights. Jamie McLean is not above helping out people like Norah Jones (don't panic - read on), but his mainstay is being the guitarist for The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. So it no wonder that his band mates came out to play on his third solo record American Heartache. Housed in B&W cover with brown as main color to touch things up this package contains no surprises. Jamie McLean knows his way around the guitar and his singing ain't half bad.
American Heartache is best described as a Southern rock album rubbing shoulders with jazz and folk. The big city is never far away. Maybe that's why he lend a couple of notes from Living Colour's Love Rear Its Ugly Head for Cherry Tree.

A good old fashioned 'rawk' album, that's Terminal Romance by Matt Mays & El Torpedo. The Canadian quartet crossed the big pond to lay down the tracks in England and although Chris Spedding wasn't involved in the proceedings it certainly sounds like he was. This is a no-frills album that will no doubt be picked by the crowd who attend the bands live shows. Don't expect advanced musical licks and tricks. This is 'in-your-face' music for air guitar players.

Listening to an album for the very first time is like travelling without a map. You may get lost, you find something new and interesting, or run into friends from the past. O My Heart by Mother Mother from Vancouver, Canada, is an album that touches base with great eighties bands like The Pixies and The B52s and contemporaries like The Decemberists and The Polyphonic Spree.
O My Heart mixes great vocal harmonies with toe-tapping bass lines and a back beat that tickles your spine. You can still trace the acoustic trio that was the core of the band before they expanded to a quintet. Their songs are build with seamless layers with rock solid results. Highly recommended.

Danish metal? You mean that there are others besides Lars Ulrich making a lot of noise? When you have living under a rock for the last two years or so you missed the rise of Volbeat, a quartet form Copenhagen who released two critically acclaimed albums and a rather good live DVD.
Their new one entitled Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood is their most ambitious album so far, with seven songs making up a loosely told tale about a singer who got shot in the desert and was left there to join the great band in the heavens. He survived and now he stares down from the stage each night hoping to spot the culprit in the audience.
Volbeat is a band that will be loved by the denimn trousers/black T-shirt youth, with their parents nodding approvement in the back of the hall. They have heard it all before; the over the top vocals, the power chords and the drummer working his ass off (he is lot better than Lars, though). Metal heads don't want change, and Volbeat delivers the goods.
Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood is released on Macot Records. Release date September 1st.

A bit of Marijuana and you are labeled as a terrorist? Only in America, land of the free:
Jake Mitchell, drummer for The Boxing Lesson and most importantly, a dear friend, will be put in Federal jail at the beginning of Sept for some marijuana growing charges. What makes this story unique and what has enraged every single one of our close friends, is that Jake has been branded by our government as a Terrorist under the Patriot Act. In fact, they have thrown the Narco-Terrorist tag on him. What this does legally for a defendant is mind blowing in terms of the new laws waged against them. If you are branded a terrorist, your wife doesn't get spousal protections and will go to jail. If you are branded a terrorist, each party involved in the crime gets full responsibility for the scope of the crime. Then there are strict sentencing minimums. And remember we are talking about Marijuana here.
It is obvious from anyone who has ever met, hung out with and gotten to know Jake Mitchell that he is anything but a terrorist. This incorrect and unfair branding on our own US citizen and friend, Jake Mitchell, is a disgrace and this has caused untypical hardships on his life. He has sold his house, lost his cars, and his freedom. We are asking our friends in the media, in bands, in t-shirt screen shops and really, anyone who can help, to send the message of his story to the public eye. We know there was a crime involved but branding him a terrorist has set unfair sentencing guidelines on a person who is anything but a terrorist.

HCTF review of Wild Streaks & Windy Days.
Punk is all about being loud, angry and poor, right? Wrong. The Yuppie Pricks is an Austin, TX band whose parents were in the upper tax bracket. No wonder they come up with song titles like Frat Cars and Fuck You, I'm Rich. Their previous album was released on Jello Biafra's Alternative Tentacles label and they still sound like a lot like the Dead Kennedys with a rock back beat and highly political and funny lyrics.
Balls is album to be played at top volume to scare the shit out of the dorks down the hall. Housed in a sleeve that is a belated answer to the Black Crowes' Amorica it deserves top billing on this year's list of best punk albums. Punk is not dead, it just changed its wardrobe.

Dweezil Zappa hits the road again to make some money with Zappa Plays Zappa. With all due respect: it's a labor of love and executed very well indeed.

Pop is a genre that nearly got killed by the majors peddling the fabricated groups, stars and idols. Thankfully tons of underground artists are keeping it alive releasing melodic goodness. Obi Best, the LA band fronted by singer and keyboardist Alex Lily, is into advanced ear candy. With leftfield arrangements their album Capades is capable of chasing way the gray clouds on a gloomy day.
Lily sometimes sings backup with retro-pop group The Bird and The Bee and while that duo is more into jazzy grooves, Obi Best follows the paths that were laid down by Syd Barret and Kate Bush. You gotta love the freak element that lurks behind the melodies.
Capades is released on Social Science Records. Digital release on August 25th. A CD will see the light of day in January 2009.

A revealing cinema verité portrait of the former Velvet Underground musician, John Cale, in creative collaboration with Brian Eno. Director Nilsson follows them to Moscow, London and Wales for the recording of a new album, “Words for the Dying”, built around four Dylan Thomas poems.
