Phish: At The Roxy

Phish is playing in waist high reverb on their mammoth 8CD At The Roxy. Recorded live Feb 19, 20, 21, 1993 Atlanta, GA, the three night stand tends to get overshadowed by the second set of the second night, an unprecedented segue fest/tease galore monster (kudos if you can name the random Wilson shout without looking it up).

Culled from 2-track master DAT's recorded by Paul Languedoc the shows were remastered by Fred Devorkian. It sound compressed, which is fine for MP3 (make it LOUD), but you loose the nuances when you play it on a half-decent audio set-up. Another beef: the packaging in a slip case with CD-covers that will spill their contents without warning and a folded leaflet with a very low information rate.

Phish are in top form, obviously enjoying their first ever three night stand as headliners, punching above their weight sometimes (Moby Dick as a birthday vehicle for Fishman) and spreading the composed stuff neatly over each night (YEM, Fluffhead, Punch You In The Eye). The band were a bit tired during the third night, playing a shorter set but ending with a great three song "bluegrass" Phish. They were going to be huge, turn into a funk monster, but in 1983 they were a quartet of musicians who would throw in every bit of musical influence they had been sampling over the years. Eclectic and energetic At The Roxy is a worthy document of the early nineties Phish.
