LA singer Eleni Mandell is still underground despite having released a slew of critically albums, EPs and 7 inches. If you have enjoyed the vocal musings of Obi Best and Inara George, her name might sound familiar. She is part of The Living Sisters with George. Writing carefully crafted jazzy pop songs her new album Artificial Fire is a bit more rock oriented, with guitar player Jeremy Drake laying down tinkling notes lifted from the Tom Verlaine book for indie rock six string dudes.
Mandell's voice sounds relaxed and in total control, singing like she is talking to a friend who has heard it all before but is still paying attention. Her band is a custom built unit for hip nightspots, a well versed lounge act who insist on playing their own material - if you don't like it, fuck off.
Eleni Mandell: vocals, electric and acoustic guitar
Jeremy Drake: electric guitars, space fog
Ryan Faves: bass
Kevin Fitzgerald: drums
