RedTrack: Dutch mini tour, interview

UK post-punk trio RedTrack are set for a short mini tour of The Netherlands. Short, catchy songs delivered with a vengeance. They have Pete Shelley (Buzzcocks) on their forthcoming double A-sided single Pole Dancer/Addicted to Lust.

Dutch tour dates:
  • 04/08 Panama, Amsterdam (8 Euros)
  • 04/09 Paard Cafe, Paard, Den Haag (9 Euros)
  • 04/10 Exit, Rotterdam (5 Euros)

The HCTF RedTrack questionnaire
RedTrack kindly answered some questions via email.

You describe your sound as "the estranged love-child of Cheryl Cole and Joe Strummer". Can you explain? The late Joe Strummer is about the epitome of punk cool and Cheryl Cole was in Girls Aloud, the prefabricated Popstars: The Rivals (UK talent show) band. Is that how you get the poppy punk (or punky pop)?
"When people think of pop/punk, they tend to think of the saturated American band scene and bands like Sum 41 and New Found Glory.
We said that we sound like The Clash and Girls Aloud, because we have the British punk live attitude and rawness of bands from the late 70's, but we've taken influence and direction from the sometimes-genius pop music Girls Aloud have written for them."

The digital age has revived the single in a way. You have released singles and an EP so far. Will there be a full length in the near future and do you stick to the double A-sided and EP formats? "We're currently recording our debut album at the moment, but we are holding it back so we can concentrate on getting our name out there to as many people as possible."

You collaborated with Pete Shelley (The Buzzcocks) for the new single 'Pole Dancer/Addicted to Lust', You even got him to sing backup vocals. How did you convince him that he should be part of it? "We played him our music, and asked him what he thought of it. He went away for a couple of weeks, and then woke up with one of our songs stuck in his head. So he got back in touch with us and said that he wanted to be involved in the next work we produced. It was fantastic working with him, and he taught us a lot about the art of song writing, and added something really special to the songs."

Do you have shortlist for future producers? Paul Weller maybe? Or Pete Doherty?
"We currently waiting to hear back from Cheryl Cole, as we're considering putting out a pop ballad with her…. But it's very likely that we'll continue working with Pete Shelley as he has said he'd be interested in producing our album."

You got rave reviews in the UK press so far. But almost nobody knows RedTrack in Europe. You will be on tour in Holland, playing three shows in what are basically bars with a small stage. How do you cope with that?
"We've heard great things about European crowds, and we're tour in Holland during the holidays so there will be loads of people out wanting to have a great time. If we can smash it in the UK, where our audiences can be more reserved, we will smash it in Holland.
Whether we're playing in a room to 50 people or a festival to 1000, we give it everything we've got."

Honey Claws: Healer

Honey Claws has been paying attention. Their previous album suffered from vocal deficiencies, an issue they tackled successfully on the new EP Healer, thanks to the mixing skills of Bill Racine (Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips). The Austin band is exploring the funk mashed with electronics, moving away a bit from hip-hop. With a pinch of reggae thrown in for good measure they are one step closer to the major league of danceable indie bands.

Healer is released on CD and as a digital release. Get it from iTunes or order the CD from the band's website.

Yeti Hands: There May Be Giants

Yeti Hands is the stage name of David Jordan from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who after being a band member of numerous indie rock bands, decided to go it alone and focus on acoustic songs with an electronic twist. His sophomore EP There May Be Giants is so lo-fi that is sounds like a collection of half finished demos, but there is definitely something there. He has a knack for coming up with original lyrics and tunes his guitar in a way that makes you sit up and take notice.

Yeti Hands: There May Be Giants

There May Be Giants is a self-released album. It comes in a 100% recycled cardboard sleeve, hand assembled, hand stamped, etcetera. Buy it from his website.

Medeski Martin & Wood: Radiolarians II

Medeski Martin & Wood keep up their high standard of improvised jazz rock. Radiolarians II, the second installment of their trilogy, exposed the basics of the members interacting with each other. Drummer Billy Martin earns the title of MVP on this album, keeping it together and directing keyboards John Medeski and bassist Chris Wood to unknown territories. Kicking of with two car inspired tracks - Flat Tires and Junkyard - they go south of the border for Padireto before arriving on the first truly "out there" track ijiji, a percussive piece, wavering piano and loaded with sound effects straight out of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.

After this they aim for the mainstream jazz crowd with Riffin' Ed (a bit of throwaway really), and Amber Gris, a piece that would fit like a glove on a French nouvelle vague movie. Having lured the casual listener it's back to business with runaway freight train Chasen vs Suribachi and the minimal Dollar Pants (with, yet again a few Auntie Beeb sound effects). To top it off Medeski slips into Hammond mode for Amish Pinxtos before the band kisses you good night with the borderline lounge act costume they put on for Baby, Let Me Follow You Down. You might expect Page McConnell - wearing a brand new shirt - to show up to add some vocals to that one.

Radiolarians II doesn't take as many chances as part I, but MMW still are more adventurous on a single disc than most bands are through their entire career.

Medeski Martin & Wood: Radiolarians II

Radiolarians II is available from the MMW web shop. Release date: April 14th.

all of us/none of us: arcane and abel

all of us/none of us: arcane and abel

Two trained guys starting working together sending each other tapes with bits and pieces. Guitarist and singer Eric Ray (San Francisco), a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and R Tyck (Los Angeles), hit it off in real life and their project, now called all of us/none of us, recorded a full length lucky robot.

When two clever guys get together, the music often suffers because they are trying to steal each others thunder. Luckily that didn't happen and the new ep arcane and abel contains a quartet of intimate, smart songs. Stand-out track with tasty acoustic guitar and dreamy brushes touches.

arcane and abel is released on Unamerican Reordings.

Dan Bull: Safe

Dan Bull is a 22 year old musician from Bromsgrove, England, who single-handedly created an indie hiphop concept album about a suicidal antagonist caught in the middle of nuclear war. That might sound overbearing and pretentious, but he has come up with a compelling story line that pulls the listener in. It's a a scary story, depicting what will happen to the human race when the big one is dropped. The details are quite gross.

Safe is an album that crosses the boundaries between indie britpop guitar and hiphop vocals. That's a big achievement that deserves worldwide airplay on adventurous radio stations.

Alligators: Piggy & Cups

People think grunge if you are a band based in Seattle, but there is lot more going on in the clubs of that city. The Alligators have internalized all the classic pop record they could their hands on. They added some rough edges to the breaks, and ended up with an album with catchy hooks, poetic lyrics, and dabs of tasty synth textures.

Piggy & Cups was recorded in Jason McGerr's (Death Cab For Cutie) Two Sticks Audio and in the comfort of Alligators' own home. It's difficult to figure out where they recorded what, but they were obviously at ease when they laid down the tracks. File under melodic pop rock.

Kristian Arper: drums, vocals
Daniel Lewis: synthesizers
Tyler Lewis: bass, vocals
Bradley Pooler: guitar
Joshua Trembley: vocals, guitar

With the release of Long Time My Love in April, North Hollywood rock band The Yelling live up to their promise of their five track demo they put out last year. Fuzzy guitars, pounding drums, zooming bass, and singing at the top your lungs, that's The Yelling who will give a lot of Seventies retro-rock emulators a mighty scare. There are a few breather tracks like the gentle Mother Carried A Child. Play it really fucking loud.

Trey Anastasio: "Time Turns Elastic" drops May 12th

A new Trey Anastasio album drops May 12th. Time Turns Elastic is a joint effort by Trey and Don Hart. Composed for guitar and orchestra, the piece might be included in the set list of the forthcoming Phish Summer tour.

Time Turns Elastic, a ground-breaking work for vocals, guitar and orchestra composed by Trey Anastasio and Don Hart, will be released on May 12th by Rubber Jungle Records, Anastasio's independent label. The piece - orchestrated by Hart and performed by Anastasio and The Northwest Sinfonia, conducted by David Sabee - blends the intrinsic elegance of classical music with searing blues-rock guitar, resulting in an exhilarating work that engages and challenges fans of both genres.

"Neither of us had ever heard anything that uses a guitar as a serious instrument intermingled with an orchestra in the same way one would write a concerto for a violin and orchestra," says Anastasio, who first collaborated with Hart at the 2004 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival while staging a piece from one of his solo albums, Seis de Mayo. "I grew up loving Ravel and Eric Clapton equally," he continues. "So I kept saying to Don, 'why can't we have a piece of music that's half Ravel and half Cream's Disraeli Gears?"

Both Anastasio, named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone and a founding member of the genre-melding rock band Phish, and Hart, who's worked with a diverse group of musicians that includes Martina McBride, Collective Soul and Randy Travis and is currently Composer-in-Residence for Orchestra Nashville, are musical chameleons whose tastes cross all boundaries. While the pair's collaborations on Anastasio's Shine (2005) and Bar 17 (2006), may prefigure Time Turns Elastic, the composition actually began as a Phish song.

"I was living in upstate New York when I started writing this little tune that just kept growing," recalls Anastasio. "I initially thought it would be a Phish song, but after I sent a demo of it to Don, it just grew organically into an orchestral piece." The 13-minute acoustic guitar demo - which is included on the album - evolved into "Movement 2" and "Movement 3" and provided Hart with the inspiration for "Movement 1."

Anastasio and Orchestra Nashville (conducted by Paul Gambill) gave Time Turns Elastic its debut performance at the Orchestra's season opener at Nashville's legendary Ryman Auditorium in September 2008. "It was ambitious, strange and wholly entertaining," said rollingstone.com. "There was no doubt that he had won over both his hardcore fan base and the Bach aficionados who were new to the party."

Time Turns Elastic will receive its East Coast premiere on May 21st when Anastasio joins Music Director Marin Alsop (the first woman to head a major American orchestra) and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for a special evening - already sold out - that will also feature classic Phish songs and solo Anastasio compositions. And Time Turns Elastic will come full circle when Phish performs it on the band's upcoming summer tour, interpreting the piece as an epic rock song. For details on the tour, the band's first in five years, please visit phish.com.

1090 Club: The HCTF questionnaire

1090 Club
photo: Casey Rifle

Indie inventors 1090 Club from Billings, Montana, are gearing up for the March 24th release of their new album Natural Selection. The album will be launched at a free hometown show, an in-store at Ernie November. All four band members kindly answered a few questions via email.

Choosing a band name with number in it, is a fine way to get near the top of the list of any alphabetically ordered list. But there's more to it, I guess. Can you explain?
Sean Lynch: "1090 Club is kind of name that has just stuck with us. Our very first drummer came up with it about 6 years ago, and we've had it ever since. It's another term for a mullet, but that doesn't necessarily translate with our music, so we downplay that a bit. The being at the top of the list just happened to work out in our favor. The iPod wasn't really a force when we came up with it."
Mike Galt: "You know, we didn't really realize that until later. But now iTunes has reversed their alphabetizing so it falls last. The name really comes from a hairstyle that we have all lived through, but seems to be multiplying here in Montana, the mullet. It is 10% in the front, 90% in the back. It started as a bit of a joke name, but then things got rolling and we had a lot of notoriety with that name so we really couldn't change it. We like it though. It ends up taking on a lot of different meanings as well. We start to notice that there are many things with the same 1090 in them. Road signs and stuff like that.
Megan Dibble: Our name is a synonym for the mullet haircut (10% front, 90% back). I wasn't around when the band was named but I'm sure there was some dorky back-story to it. "
Steve Serfazo: "Mullet."

Being based in Billings, Montana, puts you outside the mainstream. Is there a music scene? And how did you meet?
Sean: "There is a very small scene here, but mostly metal bands. Indie bands are hard to come by. Mike and I have known each other since we were kids. I played in a really popular band around here called "sprurge" in my youth. Steve played around here in some popular bands after I had moved to Portland, OR. When I moved back, I opened a café and Megan ended up working there (as well as Steve, and Mike at various times). I started the band as a pet project for a local comp we were doing and it just took off from there. "
Mike: "Yes, there is a music scene, but like our population, it is small. While there isn't tons of indie rock, we do have a lot of punk and dirt-core type stuff, along with too many jam bands. In fact, more cover bands get work in our town than touring bands. People would rather hear that stuff over and over again. The shows are always strange because you could have us playing with a metal band, playing with a nickleback-ish band. It sucks sometimes.
We all met through music. Sean and I had been friends for a while and were messing around with a song for an upcoming comp. Megan started working at Sean's restaurant and we all started jamming together. We thought, violin? That'd be crazy. So we tried it and it worked so well. We went through a few line- up changes, but the three of us stayed constant. We all knew Steve from the music scene and from different circles of friends. He was playing in a series metal band, but we thought he'd be into trying some music with us. We all jammed one time and it was set. His hard ass style fits so well. He beats the shit out of the drums."
Megan: "I met everyone basically because of the music scene. About seven years ago, the summer I finished high school, I started hanging out at the restaurant that Sean owned where a lot of the local shows were held. I eventually got a job as a waitress there, and around the same time Sean and Mike, who were working on a song for a local compilation, asked if I would like to try playing some violin with them. I agreed, and now here we are. Montana does have a pretty descent music scene. There aren't a whole lot of people, but everyone is pretty supportive of one-another and shows are a really big deal, especially the ones with touring bands because bands don't travel here as frequently as they do other more populated places. "
Steve: "I was the last member added. My previous band had played a few shows with 1090 around town, and I had played drums on a 1090 song called "little know fact" for a split cd with The Brother Egg. And a couple months later they asked me to join."

The compositions are quite complex - like meeting each other half way from the rock and classical music world. Is that why the piano and drums take care of the bottom end?
Sean: "That, and we had so many troubles with bass players we decided to go without. Was the best decision we made. Mike: In a way yes, but really the sound evolved out of necessity. We dropped having a bass player and we needed to re-arrange the sound a little. I started writing piano parts that would be more like two separate parts, or instruments. I try to keep a simple bass feel, as if it is not the low scale of the piano, but an actual bass part. But then the high end stuff tries to stay very piano-like. I love some classical music, but I don't write with it in mind. I have only played piano since I've been in the band, so I am a little inexperienced and still learning. But I believe I come at writing on piano from a very different mind set than some, so bizarre things come out. I've been a drummer for 27 years so our drummer and I really connect and lock in during live shows. Plus we write really well together. Hearts is a product of Steve and I and our strange brains."
Megan: "All of us basically play lead instruments and sing lead vocals so there is a lot going on. We've just chosen not to have a bass player so the piano and drums have to make up for the low end mainly because the violin and guitar aren't able to. We all individually have somewhat different taste in music which I think shows in some of our writing as well."
Steve: "The reason we don't have a bass player is we went through four or five of them in a few months. We played a show without one and it was the best we'd ever played."

So no more bass players then?
Sean: "We had a bass player for years, and are much happier without. No offense to any bass players out there…we just are not in the market for one right now."
Mike: "We actually have had a few bass players. Some were wonderful and helped out a lot and added a lot to our sound, but most were a pain in the ass. We kept finding very dramatic bass players. It was tough to keep them. Touring usually shook them loose, pushed them over the edge. We actual had one bass player that didn't want to play a show because they were tired from work that day. That night we played as a three piece as figured out that we could do it alone. We have thought of adding a bass, but for right now we are doing fine without it."
Megan: "We've actually tried several different bass players but none of them quite seemed to fit into what we were trying to do. We had a really great show one night that the bass player at the time decided not to play, and we've been a four-piece ever since."
Steve: "As the drummer I would never be apposed to it. However more than four band members is excessive."

There is bit of Irishness and Scottishness in a lot of the songs of Natural Selection, a Celtic folk vibe mashed with rock. Where does that come from?
Sean: "Wow, I've never heard it described that way. All of us were classically trained in music, depending on instrument. Maybe there? Hard to say… We all listen to an insane amount of different music, and sometimes the small things can rub off. I wouldn't call myself a fan of Scottish/Irish music, and I don't really have any in my collection. You've stumped me on my own band... haha..."
Mike: "Really? Maybe its my love of ¾ or 3/3 time signatures, or in my blood. I am Scottish, my middle name is Kinloch. I never really thought of the album having that sound though. But I do love sea shanty music, and oom-pa type stuff. Total sucker for it. So I guess it comes out through what I write."
Megan: "I don't think we intentionally try to make it sound that way, but violin is associated with that type of music quite frequently so I guess that might be why it sounds that way."
Steve: "I'm not sure. I think the violin is going to your head."

You collaborated with Steve Fisk (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Minus the Bear) on this album. He is a man known for an "in your face" sound. Being versed in grunge he knows all about the quiet-loud-quiet-loud guitar(s), bass and drums set-up. How did the recording of the strings and piano go?
Sean: "The piano was tracked with a full grand piano all live with the drums at Avast! Studio (recording facility in Seattle - HW). He put up a couple of SM57s, covered the piano in blankets to get rid of any bleed, and that was about it. The violin was tracked in Steve's home studio in his living room. It's a cool old house with wood walls and sounds great. He used a Chameleon Labs tube condenser on it."
Mike: "Really well. He had us set up like a rock band. Not a piano band, so the feel was really about kicking ass all around. He was so open to ideas and trying things that we really had a good time finding the right sounds. We used a full grand piano for the parts and that was amazing. The violin was recorded in his front room, it is airy, but has that sharpness of being rocking right in your face. He was really excited to record the violin."
Megan: "We treat the violin and piano in much the same way as the drums and guitar. They're all basically lead instruments. Steve was really good for us because he uses dynamics very well. We all play and sing almost all of the time so the change in volume and effects that he helped us create make the music more interesting."
Steve: "Steve is an amazing person to work with. And I don't what else to say because my kids are running around and screaming."

Natural Selection is a short album, running a little over half an hour. Albums tend to get shorter these days, almost a return to vinyl days. Got any thoughts on that?
Sean: "I personally think people have abused the "LP" format with cd's. With a 40 min run time, a vinyl record has the perfect amount of time for an artist to get their point across. Anymore, I think albums are full of a bunch of filler, just for the sake of having a "long Play" cd. Music tends to be sacrificed…"
Mike: "We tried to write a longer record, but it's just what came out. I wonder if its people's short attention span that seems to be growing even shorter as time goes by. Everything is streamlined and quick nowadays. Maybe that's the way music is going, sound bites of sound bites. Pretty soon we'll all just have intros. 20 seconds of what the song could be. Albums will be 10 minutes of snippets."
Megan: "We definitely tried to make it a bit longer, but honestly I would rather listen to a record that flowed well, and had lots of interesting points with short songs than listen to one that has lots of "filler" songs to add time. Its quality vs. quantity."
Mike: "I think that's awesome. It seems albums had gotten too long for me."

Anything else? Fire at will ...
. Sean: "You rock… Thanks Hans!!"
Mike: "We love playing together and find that no matter where we travel, Montana is the best place there is. Thanks for your time as well."
Steve: "Wish I had more time to answer your questions."

John Cale on the "Venice Biennale "in The Times

John Cale

The Times has a piece about John Cale and his project for the Venice Biennale:

Archive film, provided by the Welsh Arts Council, will be used in Cale’s show, but he has also been filming the Wales of today with the cinematographer Bevis Bowden. “I fully realise this show will be very public,” he sighs. “I will be out here. I will be judged.” He also admits, in a positive piece of self-criticism, that “doing this art has been much harder than music”.

Saint Bernadette: Word To The Lourdes

Saint Bernadette:
photo: Sean Toussaint

Saint Bernadette has grown into a quintet. The core still is Meredith DiMenna on wall-to-wall vocals and Keith Saunders on guitar. With the inclusion of three members for their new EP Word To The Lourdes they go for fast rockers (Already Gone, Wrap It Up) and slide guitar infused pop (He's A Collector). Catchy as hell, never mind the nun imagery.

Meredith DiMenna: vocals
Keith "Touch" Saunders: guitar
Joe Novelli: slide guitar
Brian Anderson: bass
Dave Valle: drums

Word To The Lourdes is released on exotic recordings.

Tracks:
  1. Nobody Wants My Kind Words

Les Claypool: Of Fungi And Foe

Les Claypool: Of Fungi And Foe

There is only one Les Claypool, the bass ace with the nasal twang and a gift for twisted lyrics. His new album got started Of Fungi And Foe when he was s commissioned to write soundtrack music for a interactive game called Mushroom Men, and Pig Hunt, a movie. He came up with the goods quickly and decided that would be a cool idea to fill an album with songs about everyday madness and doubts. So you get a song about Sarah Palin and her tits made out of recycled bottles (Red State Girl), another about dealing with lost luggage (What Would Sir George Martin Do), and of course one about a real nasty bottle of wine (Primed By 29).

Playing a wide variety of basses and accompanied by choice musicians that sound like they are banging on instruments found on the scrap yard Of Fungi And Foe is classic Claypool. If you think that Tom Waits can come up with weird beats, think again. Don't mess with Uncle Les. He can write a left-field song about anything.

Buy Of Fungi And Foe from his Club Bastardo shop.

Tracks:
  1. Mushroom Men
  2. Amanitas
  3. Red State Girl
  4. Booneville Stomp
  5. What Would Sir George Martin Do
  6. You Can't Tell Errol Anything
  7. Bite Out Of Life
  8. Kazoo
  9. Primed By 29
  10. Pretty Little Song
  11. Of Fungi And Foe
  12. Ol' Rosco

Les Claypool is currently in the midst of The Oddity Faire - A Mutated Mini Fest, a on tour with various of support acts.

Dan Auerbach: Keep It Hid

Dan Auerbach kicks of his solo debut Keep It Hid with the slow Trouble Weighs a Ton and when the listener settles back to enjoy a gentle album he slap him in the face with the grumbling distorted I Want Some More. The guitarist/vocalist of The Black Keys covers new territory on this album. It's less energetic (but not much), with folk hiding under the mayhem and has a more adventurous back beat - Bob Cesare takes care of most of the percussion. He has included Whispered Words (pretty Lies), a song that was written by his father Charles Auerbach which features great acoustic guitar and vocals by Jessica Lea Mayfield (Black Keys fans will recognize her from her vocals on Things Ain't Like They Used To Be).

Keep It Hid contains plenty of tracks that would have fitted on a Black Keys album - rockers like My Last Mistake and Street Walkin', and the bluesy Heartbroken, In Despair. It will help to pass time untile next Keys record. Auerbach is on top of his game with his songwriting right now and that is good news for the checkered shirts rock crowd. Auerbach is like Johnny Dowd - a roots rocker cutting his own way through the music jungle.

Napoleon: "I Try To Despise The Ugly People" April 27th

Napoleon is a big band. Ten members (and counting) try to find a place on stage, but suprisingly enough their songs aren't crowded at all. The Swedes dabble in exquisite blue-eyed soul pop tunes with long titles. Their new song I Try To Despise The Ugly People (But The Beautiful Ones Keep Turning Me Down) will be released as their new single on Ruffa Lane Records April 27th in the UK. It's a track from their (long title again) The Bohemians Won The Series And The Little Guy Joined The Band album.

National Beekeepers Society: Pawn Shop Etiquette

National Beekeepers Society: Pawn Shop Etiquette

National Beekeepers Society, four guys from Madison, Wisconsin, have released their second full length. Pawn Shop Etiquette picks up the pieces that were left behind by late eighties surf infused legends The Pixies. With jangly guitars and plenty of distortion, echo and feedback this album has College Radio written all over it.

They could be accused of being borderline plagiarists, but they steer clear by refraining from the lyrical weirdness of Black Francis. Plus they have brought two rare instruments in indie rock: the theremin and the melodica. The stingy songs of National Beekeepers Society stick in your ear like honey. Handle with care.

National Beekeepers Society:
Nikc Whetro: guitar, vocals, piano
Kris Hansen: bass, vocals, organ, theremin
Karl Christenson: guitar, vocals, organ, melodica
Brad Motl: percussion

Live dates:

ZAPPATiKA: The Short But Legendary Flight of the Dodo

Every once in awhile an album comes along that is really weird, but in a good way. Genre? For now Zappa-esque will do, which is appropriate because the members of Zappatika are into FZ big time. Determined to bring his legacy into the 21st century they write songs in his style but with a twist, including countless samples and quotes from the moustached maestro.

The Short But Legendary Flight of the Dodo is an ambitious lo-fi album which will freak out the initiated. Treated stunt guitar licks over a dance break and spoken word is a sure fire way to remain obscure, but since they are promoting themselves as "music 4 the mindful minority" they apparently don't give a fuck. Their live shows are a bit more melodic, and they do quite a few of FZ songs, shearing his knack for humorous (and often sexually explicit) lyrics. A song like My Little Pony isn't exactly suitable for children's ears. Love it or leave it.

An all FZ CD/DVD cover album called Strictly Frankly will be released later this year. Their first ever UK tour kicks off March 18.

Pairdown: Holykyle

Pairdown is the collaboration of Pittsburgh-based singer-guitarists David Leicht and Raymond Morin. They have been playing together since 2005, exploring different moods and tunings for the acoustic guitar. Their full-length Holykyle has just been released on Morin's one-man label Sort Of Records. They name British folk bands like Pentangle and The Incredible String Band as their influences. There are hints of Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left in there too.

Holykyle is a gentle album that will appeal to fellow acoustic players and hardcore folk fanatics who still love their vinyl. Leicht and Morin can play together as if they are sharing a twelve-string. They are joined on stage by a bass player and drummer when they play live, but they don't really need them.

Pairdown: Holykyle

Sometymes Why: Your Heart is a Glorious Machine

Sometymes Why
photo: Tom Krueger

Deceptive sweetness rules supreme on Your Heart is a Glorious Machine, the new album by Sometymes Why, an all female folk "super" group from NYC. Kristin Andreassen, Ruth Ungar Merenda and Aoife O'Donovan, were all enjoying success with their own groups when they first teamed up in 2006 and released a self-titled album. The follow-up, Your Heart is a Glorious Machine, finds them exploring the outskirts of traditional folk mashed with bluegrass and a bit of bluesy rock 'n' roll and country.

The three ladies all contributed three songs - you can tell who wrote a particular easily, because she will be doing the lead vocals. The sole cover is an acoustic version of Joey, the Concrete Blonde hit form the early nineties. It's nice enough, but their own material is far superior. The provocative opener Aphrodisiaholic sets the tone for the album, that deals mostly with men in gentle but firm songs. Cold Feet Blues is a thirties styled neo-traditional, The Stupid Kiss tells the story of the trouble a girl can get if she shares a kiss with a guy who was supposed to be a good friend.

The Sometymes Why members played nearly all the instruments, with leading roles for the baritone ukelele and glockenspiel. Michael and Will Merenda helped out with the percussion bits. If Your Heart is a Glorious Machine is indication where folk is heading, the genre has a healthy future.
