Powersolo: Bloodskinbones

Powersolo
photo: Rasmus Weng Karlsen

Powersolo is Atomic Child & Kim Kix, two Danes from Aarhus who like to hurt their guitars trying to create garage tinged dance rock with a rockablly twist. Bloodskinbones is an upbeat album with off kilter lyrics. With the aid of JC Benz on drums they bring back Adam and The Ants (Busses) and The Stray Cats (Elvin D Jerk (part 2)). Singer Kim Kix sounds a bit like Zappatika's frontman McInnes - relaxed but slightly unnerving. The kind of guy that cool kids will dig, much to the dismay of their uncool parents.

Powersolo: Bloodskinbones

Bloodskinbones is released on Crunchy Frog.

Tracks:
  1. Murder in SFAX
  2. Busses
  3. Psych Demons
  4. Gimme the Drugz
  5. Pirates of the Oblivion

  9. Elvin D Jerk (part 1)

Hollands: Faces

Hollands is a duo from NYC consisting of multi-instrumentalist John-Paul Norpoth and violinist Jannina Barefield whose EP Faces has been bubbling under since Fall 2008. They have played on Akron/Family albums, albeit on two different ones and never as a twosome. Well orchestrated and crytstal clear recorded the five tracks on the EP features upbeat rock (Strong Arm), dreamy folk (Anomie) and the delicate (Coughing Boy).

Recorded March 2005 - August 2007 at various studios and homes the question that comes to mind the most is: why only five songs?

Faces is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website.

Urban Preacher: Urban Preacher

The six tracks on the self-titled Urban Preacher EP are a showcase for the band's versatility. They play southern rock, blues, soul, funk and singer Myrrhine Faller even throws in some rap in the vein of Blondie's Rapture.

The Toronto band feels most at ease when they can rock out in bluesy tracks like On The Rooftop and Moanin' The Blues. The new single Vintage Girl is a powerful ballad name checking Deep Purple's Smoke On The Water. With a sound that is firmly rooted in the Seventies the sextet thrives in a live setting. No wonder that they recorded the EP "from the floor".

Urban Preacher:
Myrrhine Faller: vocals
Jordan Safer: keys, guitar, harp
Neil Hendry: lead guitar
Henrigues: bass
Justin Ruppel: drums
Anthony Rinaldi: saxophone

The UH OHs are an alt.powerpop trio from Norwich, England. Singer Naomi can scream like she means it and their new double A-side single I Can't Wait / I Am Underdog was made to be played really, really loud. The UH OHs' jumpy stop-start music is addictive enough to be illegal.

Secret Pop Band: Pardon the Solar Interruption

Washington DC trio Secret Pop Band are into brisk riffs. With little over half an hour worth of post-punk tunes Pardon the Solar Interruption has a very late eighties sound - a mix of The Pixies and REM. They name the Apples in Stereo as an influence, but they are bit looser than the composed math rock of that band. Definitely a band with college music geeks appeal they sing about perennial themes as the smell of Week Old Beer and breaking up with your girlfriend (Sunday's Hard Rock Fall).

J. Forté's nasal vocals are an acquired taste - think Weezer with a cold, but the Secret Pop Band can carve a niche for themselves. It won't be a big place, but it will be found by those who have a penchant for lo-fi geeks making on-a-shoestring budget albums.

J. Forté: vocals, guitars
Greg Gendron: drums
Ody Leonard: bass

HCTF review of Harder.

Hugh Cornwell: Hooverdam

At 59 Hugh Cornwell still has the DIY punk attitude. His new album Hooverdam is available as a free download. The former main man of The Stranglers has embraced internet technology in a big way as a means to communicate with his fans - his website is available in twelve languages.

Cornwell writes rollicking melodies, with a vintage rock 'n' roll beat mashed with his trademark street cool vocals. He knows that he is Banging On At The Same Old Beat, but there's no need to change a good thing.

Hooverdam is released on Invisible Hands Music. Physical copies will be available on vinyl and as a triple-sleeved digi-pak CD/DVD, which will contain Hugh’s film “Blueprint,” featuring live studio performance inter-spliced with an interview with Hugh at the Tate Gallery in London. Welcome To Ashley: Absent Man

Welcome To Ashley
photo: Zoran Orlic

Welcome To Ashley have tried to cram all of their musical heroes into a four-track EP called Absent Man. This Chicago band has internalized all the major all the cool vintage UK New Wave bands with singer Coley Kennedy channeling the trembling vocalization of Johnny Rotten in his PIL-phase.

With their Nashville roots this band it's no wonder that they get it just right with the backbeat - dry laidback drums courtesy of Sherrlia Bailey and crawling bass by Jeremy Barett. With guitar player Pete Javier waving jangling soundscapes a la Johnny Marr - yes, with quite a lot of treble - Absent Man is a serious contender for the late night programming of alternative radio stations.

Coley Kennedy: vocals
Pete Javier: guitar
Jeremy Barrett: bass
Sherrlia Bailey: drums

Living Colour: new album "The Chair In The Doorway" 09/15

Living Colour
photo: Bill Bernstein

Legendary rock band Living Colour have finished recording their new studio album The Chair In The Doorway. Release date: September 15th.

Living Colour will release their first new studio album in five years entitled The Chair In The Doorway on September 15 via Megaforce Records. The legendary downtown NYC rock band, who exploded out of CBGB’s in the late ’80s, landing all over MTV, the cover of Rolling Stone and stadium stages around the world with their Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum debut album Vivid, are back and “fierce” as ever.

Original members Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Will Calhoun and (since 1993) Doug Wimbish gathered at Sono Studios outside of Prague in The Czech Republic during the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009 to write and record what would become The Chair In The Doorway. The results stretch from the modern soul anthem “Behind The Sun” to the politically-charged, heavy rock of “DecaDance” to the sacred steel blues of “Bless Those.” The artwork for The Chair In The Doorway was compiled from thousands of contest entries by fans from around the world.
Tracks:
  1. Burned Bridges
  2. The Chair
  3. DecaDance
  4. Young Man
  5. Method
  6. Behind The Sun
  7. Bless Those
  8. Hard Times
  9. Taught Me
  10. Out Of Mind
  11. Not Tomorrow
Live dates:
  • 08/14 Patronaat, Haarlem
  • 08/15 Pinkpop Classic, Landgraaf

A world tour is currently being planned.

Snake & Jet's Amazing Bullit Band is a duo who mix raw guitar with old school keyboards. Thor Rasmussen and Thomas Teilmann Frederiksen have a good ear for danceable chord progressions and cheesy laptop programming sounds that will work as an instant floor-filler.

Their album Peace Boat is a half hour escape from the credit crunch and global warming. Matt Verta-Ray and Jon Spencer were enlisted to add the guitar mayhem. The deadpan vocals make a nice contrast with the bouncy back beat.

Peace Boat is released on Crunchy Frog.

Bombadil: Tarpits and Canyonlands

Naming your band after a Tolkien character is a very sixties thing to do. The members of Bombadil first met in Bolivia and hit it off immediately The band is based in Durham, NC, and is as quirky and whimsical as that evasive fellow who might more powerful than he looks

Their new album Tarpits and Canyonlands is a folk album that gets under your skin. With vocal counter melodies they tell stories about a Sad Birthday, the urge to build a Pyramid for their loved ones and a cool kid Matthew who finds Jesus (no more all night LAN partties or listening to Aphex Twin) and they can sing in a Mariachi meets the Far East style about Kuala Lumpur. Want to dance - try following the cues of Oto The Bear, which sounds a lot like early Genesis.

Bombadil are best described as prog-folk band with some pop drenched melodies thrown in for good measure. Too bad that there will be no live shows in the near future, since one of its members is currently unable to perform:

Daniel has been dealing with severe tendonitis in his hands since 2007. Things have gotten progressively worse and have reached a point where he cannot brush his teeth without feeling pain, much less perform with the rest of the band.

Bombadil:
Daniel Michalak, James Phillips, Stuart Robinson, and Bryan Rahija.

Tarpits and Canyonlands is released on Ramseur Records. Release date: July 7th. Pre-order from the band's website.

Tracks:
  1. I Am
  2. Sad Birthday
  3. Honeymoon
  4. Reasons
  5. Cold Runway
  6. Oto the Bear
  7. Prologue
  8. So Many Ways to Die
  9. Marriage

  11. Kuala Lumpur
  12. Pyramid
  13. 25 Daniels

The Honey Brothers: Demonstration

NY indie folk band The Honey Brothers are not afraid to use "uncool" instruments. Their new EP Demonstration features once again the band's signature sounds of the ukelele and the banjo. Demonstration is a digital release. Get it from iTunes or Amazon.

Englishman: Taxidermy

Andrew English is a singer-songwriter based in from Lexington, KT, who picked Englishman as his nom de plume for his recordings. Taxidermy, a leftfield lo-fi folk EP is his first foray and it's a quiet affair that pulls the listener in. His lyrics are about growing up ("It's time to sell your He-Man Dolls/and paint over your rock 'n' roll walls") and trouble of finding a nice person to play Horseshoes with. Hints of Richard Thompson and Bonnie "Prince" Billy are plentiful.

Taxidermy is a delicate youngthe boys album written by a man who refuses to become a sensible adult. Andrew English has a busy tour schedule (with Justin Craig and Matthew Duncan joining him on stage). Let's hope he finds an appreciative audience who will refrain from inane banter when he plays his songs.

John Cale: on heroin for BBC Wales 06/16

John Cale

John Cale is on BBC Wales TV program Week In Week Out, discussing heroin:

Rock star John Cale is no stranger to drugs - years of cocaine, heroin and alcohol abuse could have killed him.

Now the former Velvet Underground star returns to Wales to find heroin causing havoc in our communities.

He meets addicts, drugs workers and politicians - and asks why help is sometimes hard to find.
