Polynya are a quartet whose members live in three different cities in North Carolina. Their sophomore album Crop Rotation can be pigeonholed as left-field shoe gaze with all members playing keyboards and percussion. Named after the Russian word for "a natural ice hole", they go their own way, traveling the back roads of indie music, making a few friends for life along the way, and being ignored by the general public that can't handle rhythms that go outside the "one, two, three, four" bracket.
Their second album Crop Rotation is a grower, showing more layers, nooks and crannies every time it's played. The vocals are a bit uneven, the production is lo-fi, but that's no biggie since it is mainly music for the mind. The CD comes with a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt now, Apparently they have run out of the hand-numbered silkscreen posters that were used as a bonus for the physical albums buying crowd.
Polynya:
Luke Berchowitz: guitar, vocals, keyboards, percussion
Thom Canova; bass, guitar, vocals, keyboards, percussion, producing
Pat Johnson: keyboards, percussion
