The music of Oakland band Beats Antique could be described as left-field underground dance music featuring brass, dulcimer, utilizing Middle East tempos and a famous belly dancer/composer to fill the spotlights. It's the kind of music that will be playing in the background of avant garde art manifestations, trippy dance fests and of course live on stage at music fests like Burning Man.
But is it any good? The new EP Contraption (Vol. 1) offers seven tracks faeturing the core members Zoe Jakes (belly dancer, composer, and arranger), David Satori (guitar, saz, viola, and percussion), and Sidecar Tommy (keyboards, toy piano, drums, and percussion) and a plethora of guests including Jamie Janover (dulcimer) and the Fanfara Kalashnikov. In the appropiate called track Junktion Beats Antique they keep change musical lanes, Mission starts with a treated strings bit that would fit in a nightmare of Robert Smith. Think flamenco, Balkan beats, dubstep and a dozen other styles mixed into a tasty musical beverage that leaves a lasting impression.
The Contraption (Vol. 1) EP is a self-released album. Buy a digital download from the band's website. A physical CD can be obtained through CD Baby.
