Doug Martsch is either a very patient man or a perfectionist who can't let go of his songs. The new Built To Spill album There Is No Enemy took three-and-a-half years. He kept rewriting the lyrics, tried another guitar lick, yet another, decided to use both of them or a totally different one all together.
Most albums who have been made over a pro-longed periods of time sound flat - compromise get the upper hand, but There Is No Enemy has the signature density and the dark lyrics that are open to numerous interpretations. Martsh never explains what his songs are about exactly - let the listener decide what the story line is. The music There Is No Enemy is lighter than on the band's previous albums - hints of Paul McCartney melody structures rubbing shoulders with R.E.M.-like guitar exercises.
