Mike Dougthy can write a song about anything, but he gets better when he is pissed off or wants to hammer home some truths.
His new album Sad Man Happy Man starts with yet another songs about a Nectarine, but the rest of the album has more meat than the health food opener. Stand out tracks (You Should Be) Doubly (Gratified), and the putdown songs Rising Up and How to Fuck a Republican keep him at the forefront of acoustic angry folkies.
Mike Doughty is still a witty lyricist, injecting verbal slang for heroin in Lord Lord Help Me Just to Rock Rock On and laughing aloud about receiving letters on credit with John Paul Jones bustling in the hedgerow (Pleasure on Credit). It makes sense that he covers the Daniel Johnston song Casper The Friendly Ghost, a story about a creature who tosses his money in the wishing well and ends up broke. Sounds familiar, huh?
Sad Man Happy Man is released on ATO Records. Release date: October 6th.
