The Flamings Lips: The Dark Side of the Moon

The Flamings Lips will be performing the entire The Dark Side of the Moon album on NYE in Oklahoma. A studio version featuring Henry Rollins, Peaches and Stardeath and White Dwarfs is available on iTunes.

It's a family affair of sorts. Dennis Coyne, lead singer of Stardeath and White Dwarfs, is the nephew of Wayne Coyne, lead singer of The Flaming Lips.

Inviting Henry Rollins was a smart move. He has the deadpan cool for the spoken words parts that act as a counterpoint for the rather crowded music. The famous line in Time "hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way" is changed to "hanging on in quiet desperation is ...eh", while the song is kicked off by coughing (in time of course). Peaches' vocals for The Great Gig In the Sky are distorted at first before settling into a more (still rather scary) mellow mode. Money gets an "electro meets Tom Waits" make-over.

The Flaming Lips' DSOTM is weird, but highly entertaining. Hard core Pink Floyd fans may think it's sacrilegious, though.

Live date:
  • 12/31 Cox Center, (w/ Stardeath and White Dwarfs), Oklahoma City, OK
