Hilary Grist: Imaginings

The musical world has precious little things to be Norah Jones thankful for. But without her and Debbie Gibson, Hilary Grist wouldn't have decided to pursue a career in music. Debbie Gibson bursting upon the scene with her Out of the Blue album made her realize that she could that and a chance visit to a Norah Jones concert in her hometown Vancouver rekindled her taste for jazz.

Grist has a degree from Vancouver’s Capilano University Jazz Studies Program, a solid background that she put to use with two live albums before coming up her debut as a studio artist. Imaginings. Grist voice is a mix of Rickie Lee Jones and Inara George (The Bird and The Bee). She sings from her guts, the piano bubbling under her lyrics, with Tim Tweedale’s steel guitar and the Too Big To Care Marching Band’s unconventional brass, adding a bit of country to the mix. Grist is in the night club niche pulling cabaret chords from her bag of musical tricks, a class act that can shut up the rowdy stoke brokers propping up the bar.

Elf Power: Elf Power

Athens psych rockers Elf Power lost a dear friend, mentor, and close collaborator when Vic Chesnutt committed suicide in late 2009. They recorded a collaborative album, Dark Developments, in 2008.

The quintet has soldiered on and their new self-titled album is dedicated to Chestnutt. It's a dark record that manages to sound light and even upbeat at some points. Following the paths that were made by the Byrds, Love and Big Star, they focus on harmony and melody with waves of guitar tumbling gently over the back beat - check out Stranger in the Window and Goldmine in the Sun, creating an updated form of folk rock. Songs like Wander Through, with off kilter breaks and the all over the place rhythm shifts of The Concrete and the Walls, are as close as they are going to get to be pigeon-holed as prog-rock. With strings courtesy of John Fernandes and Heather McIntosh, they proof that they can be anthemic in a non-schmaltzy way. The Elves are here to stay, more power to them.

Elf Power
Andrew Rieger: vocals, guitar
Jimmy Hughes: guitar, keys
Derek Almstead: bass
Eric Harris: drums
Laura Carter: keyboards, clarinet, accordian

The Black Crowes: Croweology

The Black Crowes
photo: courtesy of Wolf Trap

The Black Crowes have followed the recipe for Croweology that made their previous album Before the Frost... a success. Set up and roll tape, recording the songs live in a studio environment. Unlike the last one, which came with a download for the acoustic bonus album ...Until The Freeze, they haven't held back and made it a double album straightaway, a little over two hours of bluesy retro rock that has been their bread and butter for a little over 25 years now.

Their big hits are there - Remedy, Jealous Again, but those acoustic reworkings are not that memorable. The good stuff comes along in Hotel Illness, the lengthy couple Ballad in Urgency and Wiser Time, and Downtown Money Waster the high point of the album, with Robinson's harp and Gotman's drums locking into each other like a Siamese twin.

There's plenty on this set to give The Crowes another lease on life. It's a summation of their output - the only "new" song is Cold Boy Smile, an in-concert regular since 2006. They will never pick up an award for musical invention, but there should be one for carrying forth the torch of Seventies music (the intro of Good Friday is a nod to Pink Floyd's Any Colour You Like).

Their current Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys Tour will be followed by yet another hiatus, a common occurrence in the band's history. No doubt that they will be back with new songs that will sound familiar.

The Black Crowes: Croweology

The Black Crowes:
Christopher Robinson: vocals, harp, guitars
Richard Robinson: guitars, vocals
Steve Gorman: drums
Sven Pipien: bass, vocals
Luther Dickinson: guitars, mandolin, banjo
Adam MacDougall: keyboards, vocals

Croweology is released on the band's own label Silver Arrow (CD and vinyl). Two iTunes only bonus tracks exist: Boomer's Story and Willin'.

CD 1
  1. Jealous Again
  2. Share The Ride
  3. Remedy
  4. Non-Fiction

  2. My Morning Song
  3. Downtown Money Waster
  4. Good Friday
  5. Thorn In My Pride
  6. Welcome To The Good Times

Red Horse (Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky): Red Horse

Red Horse (l. to r.): Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky
Red Horse: Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka, Lucy Kaplansky - photo: Dan Corrigan

Folk artists Eliza Gilkyson, John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky teamed to record each other songs and a couple of choice covers, including Neil Young's I Am A Child. Operating under the Red Horse banner the resulting self-titled album is a dead ringer for Best of 2011 lists.

It's a rare treat to assemble three fiercely independent buys artist in the same room. There are no song that feature all three singers on the same track, but each of them has captured the feel of the songs like they had written it themselves. They sing four songs each, one of their own, a cover and two written by one of the other two.

Highlights are Lucy Kaplansky with Gorka's Blue Chalk, John Gorka with Gilkyson's Wild Horse and Gylkison singing Kaplansky's Promise Me. All of them have an extensive back catalog. Let's hope they find the time to do it again,

Red Horse: Red Horse

  2. Scorpion
  3. Wild Horse
  4. Promise Me

  7. Coshieville
  8. Blue Chalk
  9. Forget To Breathe
  10. If These Walls Could Talk
  11. Walk Away From Love
  12. Wayfaring Stranger

All three artists are on the road in the USA pretty much all of the time. A few dates with all three on stage have been secured.

Silian Rail: Parhelion

Oakland duo Silian Rail have made an album celebrating the tone of the well played electric guitar with by smart percussion. Robin Landy (guitars) Eric Kuhn (drums, foot synth, vibraphone, glockenspiel) take instrumental music to the next level on their Parhelion album.

Their "less is more" approach focuses on textures and natural echo. At first sounding like "roll tape and put out an album" turns out to be a layered piece of work that unveils fresh gems after each listen. The adequately titled Maps And Mazes is a rock song crashing into jazz licks before turning into a vibraphone driven lullaby of sorts - the kind of music that will baffle budding guitarists and put a smile on the face of any musician with an open mind an a good ear.

Silian Rail: Parhelion

Parhelion is released on Parks and Records. The CD comes in a silkscreened cover.

Umphrey's McGee: Fall tour dates

Umphrey’s McGee
photo: Chad Smith

Umphrey's McGee have announced their Fall tour schedule, kicking things off with a hometown show in Chicago. The Halloween Monster Mash-Up shows are at St. Louis’ Pageant on October 30 and 31. Some of the dates will include an S2 experience.

Umphrey's McGee’s will host their Stew Art Series (aka, “S2”) – an interactive fan experience where audience members “conduct” the band’s live improvisations - in at least of few markets along the fall tour. Presented as individual events before that evening’s already schedule show, Umphrey’s Stew Art Series is a crowd-sourced improvisation experiment, in which all the music performed by the group on stage is entirely directed by S2 audience members.

Watch a clip of The Inaugural Stew Art Series Event at Milwaukee's Eagle's Ballroom on October 3rd, 2009.

Coltrane Motion: Hello Ambition!

Coltrane Motion are a left-field Chicago-based electronic indie rock duo, who have been releasing stuff since 2000. Michael Bond and Andrew Hagood, who are also part of The Most Powerful Telescope In The Universe project, have used a wide aary of vintage keyboards and trusty Danelectro guitars ro record their new full-length Hello Ambition!. With the help of GD Mills (drums) a, Hilly Kinkel (backup vocals), Tim Heyl (organ)and Jay Reynolds (Sax) the album is segue of continuous lo-fi neo-psychedelic songs that channel The Beatles' Tomorrow Never Knows (the drums in Maya Blue) and the determined experimentation of artists like Robyn Hitchcock and Steve Wynn.

Dead Confederate: Sugar

There is nothing sweet about Sugar, the second studio album by Dead Confederate. The Georgian band have retained some of the big sound of their breakthrough album Wrecking Ball, but have opted for "quiet as the new loud" for most of the songs. Opener In The Dark sets the tone for another exploration of the band's demons and fears. Vocalist Hardy Morris uses the power of drummer Jason Scarboro to jump at the deep end, but there is room for breather tracks like the Beatlesque Run From The Gun and the dreamy by Design, with Ben Wigler on cello. J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr) gladly accepted the invitation to play guitar on Giving It All Away.

Dead Confederate have added a spicey Southern sauce to their post-grunge sound. Check out Mob Scene and Semi-Thought for the best results. If they keep it up, the next album by fellow dark rockers My Morning Jacket will be likened to their music, and not the other way round.

Dead Confederate:
Hardy Morris: vocals, guitar
Brantley Senn: bass
Walker Howle: guitar
John Watkins: keyboards
Jason Scarboro: drums

HCTF review of Wrecking Ball.

Jump Back Jake: Call Me Your Man

Memphis rock band Jump Back Jake released a strong debut album last year and after the single King of Romance the next addition to their catalog is a concept EP called Call Me Your Man. Yest, it's about boy meets girl and all the trouble that ensues. The title track deals with pain,, the fast paced surf rocker If I Ever Go Back has lead singer Jake Rabinbach making an angry stand and in Tara he is pleading again - "I can love you if only you let me". It all ends with a Rose Colored Coffin (that can hold two), with a stripped down reprise of the title track.

Jump Back Jake: Call Me Your Man

Call Me Your Man is released on Ardent Music. Buy it from the band's website. Release date: September 14.

Tracks:
  1. Call Me Your Man
  2. If I Ever Go Back
  3. Tara
  4. Rose Colored Coffin
  5. Call Me Your Man (Reprise)

Jump Back Jake:
Jake Rabinbach: guitar, vocals
Greg Faison: drums
Jake Vest: guitar, vocals

Sahara Smith: Myth of the Heart

Sahara Smith
photo: Eric Valind

Sahara Smith from Wimberley, TX, has all the trappings of becoming the next big thing in folk and alt.country. Voice, songs and looks - it's a full package. T Bone Burnett oversaw the procedures during the recording in his Los Angeles studio of her Myth of the Heart album. And she delivered.

With a clear and soulful voice she eases through the songs like a seasoned veteran. She has been compared with Emmylou Harris and Lucinda Williams, but it makes more sense to file her under the likes of Caroline Herring and Kathryn Williams, below the radar singers who go their own way no matter what. Let's hope that Smith doesn't get caught up in heaps of well meant advice to sweeten her sound - that way lies madness (and possible lawsuits - Train Man sounds an awful lot like Chris Isaac's Blue Hotel).

Thousand Secrets and The Real Thing are tailor made for long drives. With the up-beat Are You Lonely and the slow lament World's On Fire (a stryrofoam angel isn't likely to be much help), she has added two songs to the Great American Book of Folk Music. At 21, that's quite an accomplishment.

Sahara Smith: Myth of the Heart

Myth of the Heart is released on Playing In Traffic Records. Release date: August 31.

Tracks:
  1. Thousand Secrets Wide
  2. Are You Lonely
  3. Train Man

End of the line for U-Melt

U-Melt
live @ Nietzsche's Buffalo, NY 2010/02/13 photo: Tommy Wetzel

U-Melt is calling it quits. The electro prog jammers have been around for seven years, released three albums and kept a hectic tour schedule. Their last show is in New York on November 26 at the Highline Ballroom.

Over the last seven years U-Melt has enjoyed all the unique experiences of being a touring rock band. We have criss-crossed the country, released three albums, and built a family of amazing friends and fans throughout the US. Recently we have found ourselves struggling through the economic downturn along with the rest of the country. After much discussion we have decided that it is time to close this chapter of U-Melt. Without naming everyone, we want to thank the numerous agents, promoters, managers, artists, friends, and family that made this trip possible.

In addition to our currently announced dates, we have added two more U-Melt shows which will be our final festival appearance and final show. On Friday November 26th, U-Melt will return to New York City for our farewell show at the amazing Highline Ballroom. Details of the event and pre-sale info will be announced soon. This will be a memorable evening in our hometown of NYC and we hope to see everyone together one more time. Before that, on September 19th, U-Melt will perform at our last Wormtown festival -- tickets can be purchased at wormtown.com/. No U-Melt dates will be added between the Wormtown Music Festival and the Highline show in November.

As for the future, we will all be spending time exploring new sonic spaces, seeking out fresh musical territory, pushing ourselves into new directions, and as always, striving to make the best music we can possibly make. In the upcoming weeks, we will be announcing some new projects and collaborations which we are all very excited about, so please stay tuned... this journey is far from over. Thanks again to all of the fans who joined us for this incredible adventure, we love you all.
