Hilary Grist: Imaginings

The musical world has precious little things to be Norah Jones thankful for. But without her and Debbie Gibson, Hilary Grist wouldn't have decided to pursue a career in music. Debbie Gibson bursting upon the scene with her Out of the Blue album made her realize that she could that and a chance visit to a Norah Jones concert in her hometown Vancouver rekindled her taste for jazz.

Grist has a degree from Vancouver’s Capilano University Jazz Studies Program, a solid background that she put to use with two live albums before coming up her debut as a studio artist. Imaginings. Grist voice is a mix of Rickie Lee Jones and Inara George (The Bird and The Bee). She sings from her guts, the piano bubbling under her lyrics, with Tim Tweedale’s steel guitar and the Too Big To Care Marching Band’s unconventional brass, adding a bit of country to the mix. Grist is in the night club niche pulling cabaret chords from her bag of musical tricks, a class act that can shut up the rowdy stoke brokers propping up the bar.
