Anneke van Giersbergen left Dutch ethereal metal band The Gathering in 2007 to pursue a career with her new band Agua de Annique. After releasing three studio albums and a record with Anathema singer and guitarist Daniel Cavanagh her new one, Live in Europe is a summary of her career, a live souvenir for her fans and - thankfully - some new songs as well.
Recorded in France and Spain earlier this year Van Gierbsergen once again shows her love for pop and rock, with three new songs (all uptempo rockers) to spice things up. Who I Am, Fury and Laugh It Out sound fresher and more alive than the older stuff that the audiences wanted to hear - they are placated as well with a re-arranged version of Shrink, a song that she wrote when she was only 19 and a live favorite at The Gathering shows.
Backed by a versatile trio Giersbergen sounds at ease and relaxed, throwing in jazz licks in Hey Okay and stretching the notes in Beautiful One. With Live in Europe her live sound is preserved for posterity. You can barely her fans though - it would have been good idea to have set up a mike or two to capture their enthusiasm.
