Joe Satriani has been a leading guitarist since 1986. Releasing high quality instrumental albums is his forte and Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards, the latest addition to his catalog, has to a more melodic riff approach than the over all the place approach Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock.
Kicking off with the riffarama of Premonition, all pieces come together in Dream Song, with a stuttering backdrop bubbling under his signature guitar tone, leading up to the album's peak Pyrrhic Victoria, a funky rocker that can bounce off the upper balconies in concert, slipping into fist-pumping rock anthem mode shortly before the two minutes mark.
Since they were recording at George Lucas Skywalker studios, sci-fi imagery made its way on the album with Wormhole Wizards and Light Years Away. The most obvious "black swan" (which means an unlikely thing) is Wind In The Trees. Running his guitar through the pitch correction software Auto-Tune, he created the sound of gusts of wind blowing tree branches every which way. It sounds uncanny and unnatural and once again sets him apart as a player who will try anything to get new sounds that fit into his tone.
