Welsh duo Paper Aeroplanes like to take walks around small welsh villages overlooking the sea. Lead singer Sarah Howells has a crystal clear voice that was tailor-made for mournful folk-tinged songs. Guitarist and producer Richard Llewellyn is right in the pocket with gentle chord structures and quiet hooks. All the tracks on their album The Day We Ran Into The Sea are originals, but they sound like they have been making the rounds for decades.
Ear candy is an overused taq right now, but it fits an album about sunsets, death and break-ups. Sadness can sound glorious. Dedicated to Howells' friend Nia George, who died of leukaemia in 2004, it's an epitaph and a new start as well.
The Day We Ran Into The Sea is released on OK! Good Records. This is a re-release of their self-released album, with three bonus tracks.
