NOLA funk quintet Papa Grows Funk have been playing their jazz tinged songs all over the globe. Their latest album Needle in the Groove has all the trappings of classic funk and then some. The rhythm section goes deep and dirty, with a nasty sax and a warm Hammond B3 alternating as the lead instrument.
Produced by the legendary Allen Toussaint and Tom Drummond (Better Than Ezra) this album will be the life of every party. Closet disco lovers will appreciate Planet of Love & Hate while funk purists will dig Red Spark, Rollo and Do U Want It - the latter has a guitar part that comes close to heavy metal.
Papa Grows Funk:
John Gros: Hammond B3 organ, lead vocals
June Yamagishi: guitar, backing vocals
Marc Pero: bass
Jason Mingledorff: saxophones, backing vocals
Jeffery “Jellybean” Alexander: drums, backing vocals
