Cobalt & the Hired Guns: Everybody Wins!

So what is exactly wrong with power pop? Not a lot actually, but it's a sub-genre that has been explored so fully that's hard to come up with something new or even memorable.

Chicago trio Cobalt & the Hired Guns try really with their latest album Everybody Wins!. There is a bit of They Might Giants in the arrangements and the joy of The Fratellis, channeling their guitar sound. But the overall feel is one of disappointment: they are a bunch of nice guys for sure, but they lack an edge to make it stick. They have assembled the bricks and tools and what-not to build something sturdy, but the result is a tree house for to minors playing under the supervision of responsible parents. Cute, lovable and harmless.

Cobalt & the Hired Guns:

Tomlinson Fort: guitar, vocals, harmonica
Mike Roth: bass, guitar, vocals
