Amsterdam based band Staton are into rough-around-edges garage funk rock. Lead singer Lara Mol throws in a few jazzims and R&B phrasings every now an then, but the main feel of their debut EP Mapped: Sins is pretty straightforward. Leaning heavily on the rhythm section the band sings about living in the Red Light District. Forget the romantic notion of brights lights, big city, their subject matter is the gutter where booze (Cocktails) and troubles (Dark Side of the City) reign supreme.
Stand-out track Riot is pushed forward by a Cure-inspired back beat before exploding into horror mayhem a la Holland Greco. Add heavily distorted keyboard and guitar and you end up with the themes song for a late night action packed TV series.
