Phish: Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 6/20/95

Another archival Phish release is for sale through livephish.com: Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 6/20/95. The filler tracks will please the harcore fans: the entire second set from 6/22/95 at Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, NY, featuring the monster Tweezer that lasted 41 minutes before going into Tweezer Reprise.

Liner notes from Phish Archivist Kevin Shapiro:

It was hot and humid on Tuesday June 20, 1995 – the night after the Summer Solstice - when Phish played their first headline show at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. The venue was a wooden, natural parabolic amphitheater designed by Peter van Dijk and set inside the Cuyahoga Valley National Park near Cleveland. Phish had played Blossom once before in 1992 opening for Santana but this time they sold more than half of the 18,000 tickets to the eleventh show of a 22-show summer tour.

The band’s first live record, A Live One, was to be released the following Tuesday and Trey had recorded his experimental jazz project, Surrender To The Air, during the spring. Phish and their management had begun the move from Boston to Vermont. Adding to the atmosphere of change, the Minkin backdrops that had been used onstage since 12/31/91 were replaced with a new set of Minkin-designed fabric scrims better suited to amphitheaters. The band was playing new material too, including a cluster of songs debuted a month before at a one-off show in Lowell, Massachusetts like Spock’s Brain, Theme From The Bottom, Strange Design and more. The ten summer shows between Lowell and Blossom saw the first live performances of Taste, and Prince Caspian as well as new covers like A Day In The Life and Johnny B. Goode. Most of these originals were eventually recorded for Billy Breathes, which hit the streets more than a year later in fall 1996.

Blossom ’95 was a barn burner, kicking off with a Llama opener followed by a killer Spock’s Brain – the 4th of of 5 played in summer 1995 before the song was shelved until 2000. Set I also featured Bathtub Gin with a pogo-stick tension jam that the band rode right over the cliff. Taste and I Didn’t Know followed and Trey introduced Fish during I Didn’t Know as “the only living layer that’s fueling this living layer.” A deep and crazy Split Open And Melt closed set I as Fish deconstructed the beat, breaking up the jam in a demented tick-tock vibe that led to a taste of Dave’s Energy Guide and some huge drums and bass. Set II opened with Halley’s Comet > Chalk Dust Torture, with some incendiary full-band jamming (and another taste of DEG) during Chalk. The major highlight of the show was centered on the jaw-dropping, first-ever combination of Mike’s Song > Contact > Weekapaug Groove. This Mike’s is must-hear, primal Phish that culminated in a spooky pulsating drone accentuated by sirens and Fish’s maniacal giggling. The pure insanity of the Mike’s ending formed the transition into Contact. Weekapaug Groove finished the suite, with Trey focusing on rhythm leaving Page free to shape the jam and foreshadowing the addition of Trey’s percussion rig in fall. Weekapaug ended in a deep, tribal section that melted into Hold Your Head Up as Trey took over the drums and Fish sang Cracklin’ Rosie. A possessed Highway To Hell capped the set. The encore was Slave To The Traffic Light, with some nice improvisation that bumped between huge arena-rock and a minimalistic, almost ambient work from Page’s Rhodes to Fish’s cymbal rolls. Amazing Grace closed another Ohio show for the ages.

The icing on the cake of the 6/20/95 Blossom release is the filler from the next show - the entire second set from 6/22/95 at Finger Lakes Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua, New York. This outrageous 3-song set picked up where the band left off at Blossom and rocketed through the stratosphere so fast and far that it even left some veteran fans confused about the band’s new direction, which was clearly OUT. Set II from FLPAC was based around a giant 41-minute Tweezer that was instantly known by all present as “The Fleezer”. Theme From The Bottom opened set II and led into perhaps one of the weirdest Tweezers in Phish history. This Tweezer spun its way into a bluegrass detour through My Generation (in the style it was played at Blossom’s soundcheck and eventually on 10/31/95 when the band covered Quadrophenia), some bent jazz complete with screaming, vacuum accompaniment and even a quick Rift tease. The Fleezer departed its free-form psychedelic roots just in time to segue into Tweezer Reprise by way of a piano interlude. Trey acknowledged the magnitude of what just transpired with his refrain of “Step into the Fleezer” as the band laid waste to the first Tweezer > Tweezer Reprise combination in more than four years. To call this segment Filler is to do it an injustice - Blossom and FLPAC are forever connected.

6/20/95 Blossom was created from Paul Languedoc’s stereo soundboard/audience mix, mastered by Fred Kevorkian and contains three and a half hours of music totaling just 25 songs. The 3-CD-length set is currently available as a FLAC and MP3 download at livephish.com and is slated for release by JEMP Records on April 30, 2013.

2. Spock’s Brain (5:47)

Safe Haven: Sermon For No One

Fiddle? Check. Pedal steel? Check. Honky-tonk piano? Check. Songs about stealing and booze? Check. Safe Haven, a duo based in the Windy City, keep alight the spirit old school blues and bluegrass. And while they are at it, they throw in a bit of Southern rock as well.

Lead guitarist and singer Patrick Lyons and drummer Tony Labor have been at it for a decade or so, playing with friends and guests to fill out their sound in the studio and on stage. Their second full-length Sermon For No One celebrates roots music in its various guises captured in seven originals penned by Lyons, and two traditionals. This is an album that goes well with hard liquor and long rambling conversations with good friends and total strangers alike.

In-Flight Safety: Destroy

It's kinda ironic for a band called In-Flight Safety to release a single called Destroy. The Halifax based outfit doesn't sound dangerous at all, though. They name Echo & the Bunnymen and Ride as their influences, but they are far more mainstream than those bands.

Soccer moms will love them and it's superior to most of the muzak that's piped through the sound system of your local shopping mall. The guitar is nice, but the vocals might fail to register beyond the track's running time.

Zookeeper's Palace: Red Sky Ruminations

Zookeeper's Palace
photo: Lyndsey Vlaicu

LA based progressive polyrhythmic band Zookeeper's Palace are an ambitious lot. The sextet touches base with space-rock, funk and jam-electronica. Their debut full-length Red Sky Ruminations will be embraced by jam band lovers and dance ravers. Think King Crimson crossing over the summer festival circuit and upstaging the Disco Biscuits.

With a tribal beat and stream-of-consciousness lyrics they bring back the heyday of funky cosmic rock. With their skills they shouldn't have any trouble stretching tracks on stage, building on the hard rock vibe Perfect Picture or the ominous keyboards in Moments Like These.

Zookeeper's Palace:
Matt Fonda: vocals, percussion
Candice Harris: drums, percussion
Matt Luker: keyboards, vocals
Mike Bear: bass, vocals

Baby Scream: Baby Scream (Special Extended Edition)

The self-titled Baby Scream album is being re-released as a a special extended edition. Basically a one-man project by Argentinian guitar player Juan Pablo Mazzola the songs are carefully arranged powerpop songs. By adding three mixes by producer Muddy Stardust (Chris Robinson Brotherhood) and an early of stand-out track Jekyll & Hyde the listener is provided with an insider's view of the choices that were made for the final product. Truth be told: the Stardust mixes are inferior - the slightly claustrophobic feel doesn't sit well with the more open-minded approach on the original album.

Still, it's nice to have this album back in print. Recommended if you like early Pink Floyd, Marc Bolan and Jarvis Cocker.

Baby Scream:
Hernán Pascual: lead guitar
Juan Pablo Mazzola: vocals, rhythm guitar

Johnny Dowd: new album "Do the Gargon" 08/05

The new Johnny Dowd album Do the Gargon will be released on August 5 on his own label, Mother Jinx Records. Cadiz will distribute in Europe. As to why the album is named as such, Johnny offers this by way of explanation:

DO THE GARGON is one bootyful record. No fluff, all muff. Not looking to the future, not thinking about the past. This is a band for real—pumping out some fat grooves. Seriously, I dig this record. It captures the energy of a live performance. Hats off to the band, Mike Stark and Willie B.

I know the question on everybody’s mind is, ‘Who the hell is Gargon?’ All I can say is: look around, look in the mirror, look at me. He is the beast within who got his feelings hurt (boo hoo), he is the boy left at a filling in the great state of Nebraska in 1953. He says ‘rock and roll will never die,’ and he is a pretty good dancer. That’s why mother married him.

This record is not being released. It’s being UNLEASHED August 5, in the year of our lord, 2013.

The master of junkyard Americana will on the road in Europe in September. For now a date in The Netherlands is the only confirmed show.

Able Archer: Bullets

Able Archer, an alternative rock band from Dublin, go for passionate songs from the Pearl Jam variety. being Irish they can't escape the influence of U2, but that doesn'get in the way of their love for grunge with a hint danceable New Wave. Their debut EP Bullets has written arena rock written all over it.

When rock anthems are your thing this quintet delivers just that - singer Emmett McCaughey has enough power to reach the upper reaches when they graduate to the big halls. Considering that they recorded the EP on a shoestring budget, the sound is pretty damn good, with the kind of separation and dynamics that Metallica has been looking for since St. Anger.

Mike Gordon: The Egg

Mike Gordon has a new live album. The Egg was recorded at The Egg in Albany, NY on December 11, 2011, a venue with rather good acoustics. The album is available a a limited 3CD-set through Dry Goods and digital through LivePhish (MP3 are free).

Mike Gordon: bass, vocals
Scott Murawski: guitar, vocals
Todd Isler: drums
Craig Myers: percussion, n'goni, vocals
Tom Cleary: keyboards, vocals

On December 11, 2011, Mike Gordon and his band performed at The Egg in Albany, NY as part of a quick November/December weekend run of dates. The show quickly became a fan-favorite and was cherry picked for a brand new live release, simply known as “The Egg”. It has been fully remixed from the band’s multitracks and mastered for release and is available as a CD set and a free MP3 download at LivePhish.com.

Mike describes the venue as “so tight sounding that evening that every note was easy to hear, which allows a band to play with more intention and more connection. Ironically, the extra feeling of control made us feel like we could play with more reckless abandon.” The five-piece lineup includes Mike on bass, Scott Murawski on guitar, Craig Myers on percussion, Tom Cleary on keyboards and drummer Todd Isler.

The show features originals from Mike’s catalog, including “Horizon Line”, “Only A Dream”, “Voices”, and “Hap Nappy”. Phish fans will recognize “Sugar Shack” and “Suzy Greenberg”, which included The Dude Of Life on vocals. To round out “The Egg”, three tracks were selected from Mike’s March 26, 2011 show at Higher Ground in Burlington, VT, including an extended version of “Mound”.

The 3-CD set is available as a very limited physical run, with deluxe packaging that includes a custom round tin with three discs tucked away inside a custom Egg cotton stash bag. It is available for pre-order now exclusively at Phish Dry Goods and Mike’s online store. It will not be available in stores. This 3-CD set ships for just $4.50 and will be available on or around April 30th, 2013. Bundles are also available with T-shirts and Hoodies.

White Firs: Mutes & Signs

UK noise rock trio White Firs are quick to release a follow-up for their debut single In My Way b/w Nothing's Never Much. The new EP Mutes & Signs contains four barbed-wired songs. Like their predecessors The Jesus and Mary Chain they build their tunes on pop melodies - you'd might say that the light is trying to poke through the dark overtones.

The songs are dense and intense, and proof that they are still growing. Especially the title track Mutes & Signs and the howling feedback and distortion of Hollow Heartache show their skill to come up with menacing mayhem mixed with smart melodicism.

Danny Trew Barton: bass, vocals
James Trew Barton: guitar, lead vocals

Street & Stone: Turn

Dutch bass player Peter van Straten has been a respected sideman throughout this career, providing the low end for Nina Hagen,Eric Burdon, Herman Brood and Billy Preston. Currently living on the sticks of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, he started composing for the sheer fun of it, teaming up with Alex Ayuli who wrote most of the lyrics. The project is named Street and they end up with 40 songs. A change meeting with Gerry Rafferty, who convinced him that he should sing his own songs, gets the ball rolling. After getting in touch with a handful of seasoned Dutch musicians it becomes a larger scale project: Street & Stone. A studio is booked in Limmen, The Netherlands and the stack of songs is narrowed down to a dozen tracks for a full-length, Turn.

Van Straten has a rather fragile voice, but it fits the melancholy of the songs. Most of it mid-tempo melodic rock with a hint of psychedelica although he can channel Lou Reed too (in the first verses of verses of Peace) and slip into disco-tinged AOR (Paradise). It's all about intimacy and the need to belong (but not at any price, mind you). Turn is an album that grows on the listener. What took him so long to come forward as a front man? Well, let's be grateful that he did.

Street & Stone:
Peter van Straten: vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, mellotron, piano, Hammond organ
Rene van Barneveld: pedal steel, acoustic guitar
Nico Brandsen: Wurlitzer piano, Hammond organ
Leon Klaasse: drums
Wouter Planteijdt: guitar
Allard Robert: French horns
Jan Kooper: saxophone

Song Dogs are a rock band who sound like they've been locked up in a cupboard for 40 years or so. The influences of Neil Young and The Band loom large over their debut full-length Wild Country. The Philadelphia based sextet are into melodic rock with an edge, branching out to Tex Mex and Americana. Their secret weapon is percussionist Mariama O'Brien. Born on Liberia, where she wasn't allowed to play music at all, she brings swing to the tracks. Like the legendary Seventies predecessors they are blessed with a wealth of lead singers (three of them) and songwriters (four). Each voice uses another palette, adding another feel to the overall sound.

This band is a hidden gem. All they need is a bunch of classic rock DJ's who are looking up for something else for their playlists. The songs are new, but old as the hills at the same time. Wild Country is an album that was already somehow. Produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Sheep Dogs) this prairie rock is full of life and space.

Song Dogs:
Michael Southerton: vocals, guitar, pedal steel, organ
Ryan McCloskey: guitar, harmonica, vocals
Sam Conver: bass, vocals
Mariama O'Brien: percussion
Dan Cooper: drums
Emily Southerton: rock organ

The Chewers: Chuckle Change And Also

Ever wonder what the off-spring of Johnny Dowd, Nick Cave, Roky Erickson, The Residents and Tom Waits would sound like? Travis Caffrey and Michael Sadler are The Chewers, an off-kilter duo based in West-Virginia. Their most recent album Chuckle Change And Also has spoken word, loops, keyboards, drums and guitar and then some - pessimistic avant-garde Americana, but with a wry sense of humour.

The deadpan vocals delivered over a musical candy store backing are not for the squeamish. The songs, short as they are demand the full attention of the listener. They ask stern questions about the blessings of modern day technology, which is kinda ironic since they use it to create their music and get their message out. The duo wants to be heard, but crowd-pleasing isn't part of their vocabulary. Proud to be part of the underground they soldier on, catering to a niche that doesn't even show up in the graphs of "long tail" gurus.

Redfoot: Make It Quick

Romi Dyron, Alex Topornycky, Kurt Gottwald and Chris Yetner are Redfoot, a NYC based pop band who mix folk with psychedelic rock. Their debut single Make It Quick offers jangling guitars, gentle drums (brushes galore) and dream pop keyboards figures.

Hipster fodder or and interesting new sound? The jury is still out on that one, but this lush single shows promise.

Dead Sea Souls: Brave b/w The Comet

Scottish band Dead Sea Souls have a gift for melodic pop. Their new single is an AA side and rightly so. Brave and The Comet are like the two sides of coin - different, but inseparable . Brave is the pop, while The Comet has a Caribbean feel, but both songs really heavily on the vocals and the twin guitars.

There is no such thing as Scot-pop (let's not call them Britpop, shall we, thanks), but for lack of a better word, it'll have to do. With their steady flow of singles, EPs and full-lengths the quartet is building an impressive catalog of well-crafted pop sings with unmistakable Caledonian flavor.

Dead Sea Souls: Gary Burns: bass, vocals
James Sweeney: guitar
David Clark: drums
Colin Sneddon: guitar, vocals

Brave b/w The Comet is released on Platform Records. Release date: May 20th.

Live date:

Kapok: Flatlands

Dutch jazz trio Kapok wasted no time recording their debut album Flatlands. within a few a few weeks after their formation they set up shop at Kytopia in Utrecht and pressed "record". After jamming extensively, they sifted through 15 hours of the tape, kept what they liked and used it as a launch pad for further composing and arranging. Bringing in guest players and the full Ragazza Quartet (whose strings add colour to two of the tracks), this debut album hits the ground running, bursting at the seams with adventurous music.

Horn players are a rarity in jazz - the sheer volume of other instruments is likely to drown them out, but it's Morris Kliphuis who gives the trio its unique tone of voice. With Timon Koomen on guitar and Remco Menting on drums, the trio rises to the occasion, with an open ear and dexterity that belies their years. Try finding a modern day jazz album that sounds as warm as this one and you will likely to come up empty-handed. Dont' let the rosy glow of the stand-out track Nausicaa fool you - they can switch to Zappa-esque jazz rock as well (Murofushi) and total freak-out in the appropriately titled Herrie (Dutch for "racket") before conjuring a sunny beach in South America in the album's closer Tarantella. Fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee.

The Bristles: Bigger Than Punk

The Bristles
photo: Thomas H Johnsson

Before punk became a fashion item, there was anger. Real anger. Swedish quartet The Bristles was part of the movement in the early Eighties and shortly reformed in 1996 and 2008. Now they are back with their second full-length Bigger Than Punk and they haven't slowed down - far from it. Still dreaming of a revolution and getting mad at racists, male chauvinist pigs, domestic violence, capitalism in general and of course the good ol' USA, they thunder through 11 songs in little over half an hour.

It will the scare the shit out of Green Day fans, but if you are into the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and The Exploited, you can't help but like these men a lot. Punk is not dead - it's alive and well in Landskrona, Sweden.

Armchair Committee: Imola

Armchair Committee are a rock trio from Bristol. Taking cues from the early Nineties grunge, they go for a loud and dirty sound in the lead single Boxcutter, a track form their forthcoming debut EP Imola. Don't let that fool you. They also have surprisingly gentle song about a pain killer, Codeine (A Plan of Sorts). The instrumental To Arms stands out with a great guitar vignette played over an ice dry drum beat. The album closes with Imola, a post-rock song that can go places when played live.

Armchair Committee:
Tom Hackwell: guitar, vocals
Dave Larkin: bass, vocals
Dan Frost: drums, vocals

Imola is a self-released EP. Limited edition of 100 hand-made, individually numbered CD's. Release date: May 13.

Russ Kaplan +7: The Ulysses Cycle

Russ Kaplan
photo: Kevin Duffy

Can you set Homer's tale of brave Ulysses to music? It's been done by Cream on their Disraeli Gears album, but NYC composer Russ Kaplan ups the ante with a full suite dedicated to classic poem of Homer. He assembled a septet and recorded The Ulysses Cycle. A musical omnivore such a he couldn't resist incorporating elements of classical music, jazz, dixieland, electro, hip-hop and indie rock.

The story in brief: our hero fight in the Trojan War and gets lost while making his way home to Ithaca and his lovely wife Penelope. He hooks up with some damsels in distress along the way, escapes monsters, his ship mates get stoned and he messes around with a cyclops. Finally he makes it back to Ithaca, only to find that is palace is crawling with suitors who want to marry his wife, kills them all and lives happily ever after. Well, not really, the ancient Greeks didn't care for Hollywood endings.

Kaplan had his work cut out for him trying to fit in all of the above and then some in 20 pieces of music, but he pulled it off, using various genres to capture the mood of a particular scene. It helps if you are familiar with the story, but you don't need a degree in Greek poetry of get the gist of what is going on. Bear that in mind and it makes perfect sense that he used Thirties jazz to accompany the singer in Lotus Eater (drugs, jazz, get it?).

Russ Kaplan +7: The Ulysses Cycle

The Ulysses Cycle is released on Ropeadope. The players: trumpet player Jonathan Powell (Eddie Palmieri, Blitz the Ambassador), saxophonists Kyle Aulnier (Awakening Orchestra) and Mike McGinnis (Stu and the Negro Problem, The Four Bags), guitarist Tom Gavin (Moore & Sons), bassist Moppa Elliott (Mostly Other People Do the Killing), drummer Wayan Zoey (The Funk Ark), and percussionist Rohin Khemani (Red Baraat).
