Folk is back and we can blame Mumford & Sons. Thankfully more talented bands can catch the wave, now that every record exec is looking for a similar act. Enter Belgian quintet Geppetto & The Whales, five young guys - four of them are still in school with a gift for melody and blessed with the dynamic range of seasoned veterans. Their EP People of Galicove touches base but with the Fleet Foxes. The tracks flow together as one, with leaps and bound, driven by luscious vocal harmonies. Stand-out tracks are the sad song Hannah and the ambitious Indian Child / Switch On the Light. With three guitarists CSN & Y come to mind. A tall order to live up to, but there is no doubt that this band will be big in the near future.
Their current tour might well be the last change to see them in a small club. Fingers crossed that their label will give plenty of time to work on their full-length that will be released later this year.
Geppetto & The Whales:
