The album cover as an art form: "I Need Nothing - a nearly useless odyssey"

The art of using iconic album covers to make a point: I Need Nothing - a nearly useless odyssey, a video by Lisbin based artist Cãoceito:

‘Useless’ (...) was the kick-off, and the thought on how album covers (vinyls, in this case) enable people to ‘listen with the eyes’ the main goal of the project. At a time where digital audio files dominate but where traditional mediums still seduce fans, the album covers, being useless for some, stay relevant for others.

Thom Yorke pulls his music from Spotify

No more solo Thom Yorke and Atoms For Peace on Spotify. The Guardian reports:

Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke has pulled his solo songs and those with his group Atoms For Peace from music streaming service Spotify, complaining that "new artists get paid fuck all with this model".

Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich took to Twitter to express their annoyance at the business model for new artists, and explain their reasoning.

"The numbers don't even add up for Spotify yet. But it's not about that. It's about establishing the model which will be extremely valuable," Godrich, whose production credits include albums for Radiohead and Paul McCartney, tweeted. "Meanwhile small labels and new artists can't even keep their lights on. It's just not right."

He continued: "Streaming suits [back] catalogue. But [it] cannot work as a way of supporting new artists' work. Spotify and the like either have to address that fact and change the model for new releases or else all new music producers should be bold and vote with their feet. [Streaming services] have no power without new music."

Spotify offers a limited free streaming service, and an unlimited service at tiers of £5 and £10 a month. But some artists have complained that it is less effective for them to make music available there than to sells CDs and digital downloads because the per-stream payments are comparatively tiny.

The industry average offers slightly less than 0.4p a stream – meaning that 1m streams of a song would generate about £3,800. Most songs receive far fewer streams.

The Brighton Beat: Live At The Bean Runner

Afro-beat big band The Brighton Beat can sound really quiet considering the number of people on stage. The fice mellow tracks on Live At The Bean Runner, recorded in Peekskill, NY, are allowed to develop organically. Kicking off wiht a cover of Fela Kuti's Dog Eat Dog theyslip into Giraffe, one of the stand-out tracks from The Brighton Beat LP, throwing quite a few hat tips to the Supertramp classic Bloody Well Right.

Live At The Bean Runner is a mellow album as a whole, flowing gently but picking up up speed every now an then when it looks that they have painted themselves into a corner. Jazz comes to the rescue in Loose Cannon and they end the album on a high note with great percussion and keyboards interplay, a loud guitar solo and a good ol' sax battle during Big Top.

Phish: Toronto Show Postponed To July 22nd

Phish
7/9/2013 Toronto, ON LE Poster by Pat Hamou.

No Phish in Toronto last night. Downpours made it unsafe to go ahead:

Due to insurmountable transportation and public safety issues resulting from the power outage in Toronto after severe downpours in the city, Phish's performance tonight at Molson Canadian Amphitheare has been postponed. The show has been moved to Monday, July 22. All tickets will be honored at the new date. Refunds are available at point of purchase for fans who cannot attend. Phish has been greatly looking forward to their first Toronto appearance in nearly 13 years. Everyone involved worked tirelessly throughout the day and exhausted all options, but ultimately, public safety had to come first. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

Deconstructing "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Band"

Want to geek out a bit? How about deconstructing Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Band. The Beatles used two 4-track machines to work their magic. an let's not forget engineer Geoff Emerick and producer George Martin.

Each of four original master tracks is isolated and shown in a different colour.*

(1) GREEN ___________ 0:00
Drums, 2 guitars, and bass

(2) BLUE _____________ 2:24
Horns and punched-in lead guitar

(3) RED ______________ 4:40
Vocals

(4) COMBINED ________ 6:54
[1, Green] + [2, Blue] + [3 Red] + [4 Yellow (Crowd Noise)]

??????????????????????????????

*************************************
The following Information is from "The Beatles Recording Sessions" by Mark Lewisohn; and "Recording the Beatles" by Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan.

This song was recorded in February 1967, using TWO 4-track machines. After recording tracks onto the first tape machine, the recording was then mixed onto the 2nd tape machine.

This technique is called "bouncing". It refers to the use of a second tape machine to combine tracks from the first machine. This freed up one or more tracks to add additional instruments. In those days, this technique was used to overcome a limitation of 4-track recording equipment. Nowadays, modern multi-track and digital recording studios make such efforts unnecessary.

*************************************
2nd Tape Machine :
This "bounce" tape is what we are hearing.

Track 1 .. [ GREEN 0:00 ]
Drums, guitars, and bass (From "A", Tracks 1+2)

Track 2 .. [ BLUE 2:24 ]
Horns and punched-in lead guitar

Track 3 .. [ RED 4:40 ]
Vocals (From "A", Track 3+4)

Track 4 .. [ YELLOW 6:54 ]
Audience sounds*
*Note: Audience track (yellow) is not shown alone. The last bit is all four tracks together.

*************************************
Additional info

1st Tape Machine : "Recorder (A)"
(Not heard in these clips. Information only.)
Track 1 .. Drums + Guitars
Track 2 .. Bass
Track 3 .. Lead + Harmony Vocals
Track 4 .. Additional Harmony Vocals

Ghost Cousin: "In Any Place" live video, new album "Scotland" in August

Impressionist pop band Ghost Cousin hail from Edmonton, AB. They are currently putting finishing touches on their new full-length Scotland. They have put up a homemade live video of In Any Place. It's a dreamy song, sounding like a sleepy ambient version of The Decemberists.

The album is mastered at Sterling Sound. It will be released in August. Lead singer and drummer Mathew Letersky took care or the mixing.

John Cale: new single later this Summer

A new John Cale single will be released later this Summer. From the Wall Street Journal:

John Cale, 71, is co-founder of the Velvet Underground. His 15th solo album, "Shifty Adventures in Nookie Wood," was released last year. He will release a single later this summer.

The future direction of music demands that musicians today lose themselves in technology and learn from their mistakes. In the past, musicians tended to view technology as a nuisance—something someone else did so they could be left alone to create. But technology and music are merging rapidly—forcing musicians to view software as part of their composing and arranging palette.

Performance rock, in particular, is becoming granular—meaning artists must find new ways to make the most of small things. Young bands don't have the gear major bands do, so they will have to focus on getting big sounds out of more meager resources. Performance artists also will have to become sound designers. How you bathe the listener sonically needs to be considered from the start. Technology and risk-taking will be key.

Cale has been posting weird images on his official website. Latest addition: a plastic red rhino lost in a forest of tapes.

Words about music (306): Jeff Beck

I don't care about the rules. In fact, if I don't break the rules at least 10 times in every song then I'm not doing my job properly.

Words about music (305): Jeff Tweedy

Writing songs has always been hard and easy. It's not always easy when you want it to be, and then sometimes it's just like turning on the faucet. That's just the nature of it.
