Singer-songwriter Emilia Cataldo, who goes by the nom-de-plume Nehedar has found a way to mix electronics and strings into her jazzy folk songs. This Heart is her sixth album and this one should get her out of the underground.
With crystal clear vocals, she sings about rocky relationships and unreliable friends. Losing her daytime job was the inspiration for Something to Call Mine. Too bad that What's Becoming is ruined by rather cheesy keyboards and sound FX, with ill-advised R&B phrasing.
With stand-out tracks On Killing about a US soldier in Afghanistan (with a great trumpet part by Mike Shore) and jazz-tinged ballad Self Fulfilling Prophecy Emilia Cataldo proofs her worth as composer and singer. All she needs is a break. Recommended if you like Jessie Kilguss.
