Austin grunge rock trio Megafauna like to catch the crowd on the wrong foot by throwing in prog breaks and licks courtesy of leading lady Dani Neff. Their new album Maximalist veers between fast pacers like Eggs, wavering vocals on top of a lone electric guitar in the Sugarcubes pastiche Carnie Girl and borderline goth (Precious Blood and Monsters Sleeping).
Lead single Haunted Factory hammers home their cross-over approach, but it's the weakest track. Each band member is trying to get the upper hand and the song falls apart. Megafauna have a lot to say, but they are in need of a ruthless editor to help them focus.
Megafauna:
Dani Neff: guitar and vocals
Zack Humphrey: drums
Greg Yancey: bass
