Phish: "A Picture Of Nectar" on vinyl

Phish: A Picture Of Nectar

Phish will release their third studio album A Picture Of Nectar on vinyl. The limited 2-LP edition will be sold at the The Freezer shop at the shows on Randall’s Island (June 11 & 12) and online at Phish Dry Goods:

On July 11 & 12, The Freezer at Randall’s Island will play host to the JEMP Record Store. We’re excited to announce that Phish will release A Picture Of Nectar, the band’s third full-length studio album, as a Limited Edition Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set, available exclusively for the first time at the JEMP Records Store at Randall’s Island. The LE Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set is limited to 7,500 individually foil stamped, numbered copies; 2,500 of which will be available at Randall’s (the remaining quantities will be available in stores at Phish Dry Goods at a later date, so fans at Randall’s will get the first crack at the release months in advance). This will be the first time A Picture of Nectar has been pressed on vinyl.

A Picture of Nectar was recorded in 1991 at White Crow Studios in Burlington, Vermont on 24-track 2″ tape and mixed to 1/2″ stereo reels. This was the band’s major label debut and the start of a long relationship with Elektra. It was also their tribute to Nectar Rorris, owner of Nectar’s in Burlington, where Phish played many multiple night stands in the 1980′s that in their words “taught us how to play.”

Like Junta and Lawn Boy, Phish self-produced A Picture of Nectar “with a lot of help from” Engineer Kevin Halpin. The material displayed the growing extent and diversity of Phish’s talents honed throughout eight years of rehearsals and hundreds of live shows. Twenty two years later, nearly every song on A Picture of Nectar is still in live rotation today.

A Picture of Nectar was mastered by Bob Ludwig and released by Elektra February 18, 1992 on CD and cassette. The album went on to be certified Gold. In 2014, Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering cut the lacquers from the original stereo master reels for the vinyl edition. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the album (transferred from the vinyl master).

We’ll be announcing additional details about picking up the release at Randall’s Island this week. There will be a merchandise check on site, so that you don't have to haul around your records all day.

The Who: 50th Anniversary British & Irish Tour

The Who celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a British & Irish Tour. Wait a minute, 50? Pete Townshend explains:

Trying to stay young. Not wearing socks. Growing a great big woodcutter's beard. Might even wear a check shirt on stage and get a tattoo of a Union Jack. Always a fashion victim. But under no illusions. We are what we are, and extremely good at it, but we're lucky to be alive and still touring. If I had enough hairs to split I would say that for thirteen years since 1964 The Who didn't really exist, so we are really only thirty-seven.

Gladshot: Maxwell's Cool Demon

NYC indie rock band Gladshot are back with a new EP. Maxwell's Cool Demon is the follow-up for their Burn Up & Shine album which came out in 2008. They kept themselves busy playing shows and writing songs for the indie rook musical Barcode. A few of those songs made it to the new EP, including the cheerful sounding but rather sinister Corp Safe.

Once again produced by John Agnello the EP is laidback and packing a punch simultaneously. Debbie Andrews (keys) and Mike Blaxill (guitar) take turns handling the lead vocals, singing songs about plants (Fun With Hydrangeas), and the quest for a stand-out skin art design (the powerpop song Star Tattoo). With a nod to the Stones in Steady Light they have written their best rock song to date. Gladshot may be very prolific, but they make in quality with they lack in quantity.

Gladshot:
Debbie Andrews: vocals, keys
Mike Blaxill: vocals, guitar
Macolm Gold: bass
Tony Mason: drums

Maxwell's Cool Demon is a self-released EP. Buy it from their website.

Tracks:
  1. Fun With Hydrangeas
  2. Star Tattoo
  3. Steady Light
  4. Dog On A Skylight
  5. Corp Safe

A Psych Tribute To The Doors

Tribute albums are tricky. Round up a handful of covers from well-established, throw in a few unknowns to get some street cred and come up with a niche like metal or country to tie it all together. Most of them end up in the cut-out bin, but A Psych Tribute To The Doors stands a change to pick up sales, riding the wave of the current resurgence of psychedelic rock.

Some of the covers are interesting enough to play more than once - Love Me Two Times by the Psychic Ills has a slacker flavor that will impress suburban stoners and fans of Tame Impala and Jacco Gardner, the instrumental People Are Strange by Camera is memorable its use of surf reverb, and the sitar in Elephant Stone's L.A. Woman is a nice touch.

On the downside: Dead Meadow runs The Crystal Ship into the ground with an ill-advised drone intro and Light My Fire by Wall of Death fails to ignite.

A Psych Tribute To The Doors is released on Cleopatra Records.

Tracks:
  1. Elephant Stone – L.A. Woman
  2. The Black Angels – Soul Kitchen
  3. Psychic Ills – Love Me Two Times
  4. Dark Horses – Hello, I Love You
  5. Camera – People Are Strange
  6. Dead Meadow – The Crystal Ship
  7. Sons Of Hippies – The Soft Parade
  8. Dead Skeletons – Riders On The Storm
  9. Wall Of Death – Light My Fire
  10. Clinic – Touch Me
  11. VietNam – Roadhouse Blues
  12. Geri X – Love Her Madly
  13. The Raveonettes – The End

Words about music (344): John Lydon

Records were vitally important to the development of music and of all music cultures. With that being pushed by the wayside, I can't see an iPod uniting us. In fact it separates us, the streets are full of people bumping into lamp posts, listening to their own little universe, and there's no sharing in that.

Van Dammes: The VD EP

Finnish punkers Van Dammes are out of tune quite a lot on their debut, The VD EP. No big deal at all for this kind of music - these guys are in it to have a fun, playing loud and fast songs. John Cale & Liam Young: "LOOP>>60Hz : Transmissions from The Drone Orchestra" @ the Barbican 09/12-13

John Cale
photo: Piper Ferguson

John Cale and Liam Young join forces for a new audio-visual collaboration, LOOP>>60Hz : Transmissions from The Drone Orchestra, at the Barbican in London on September 12 and 13:

Join two fearless innovators as the Barbican Theatre is transformed by a brand new audio-visual collaboration.

Musical pioneer John Cale believes so strongly in the power of sound that he once thought it was possible to alter the weather with musical frequencies. Now, for this world premiere performance, he joins forces with speculative architect and technology storyteller Liam Young to re-imagine another, increasingly pervasive, industrial innovation.

LOOP>>60Hz offers an unprecedented experience as John Cale and his band perform music from across his catalogue, expressly adapted to durational forms, unusual tunings and unorthodox audio delivery. Liam Young’s collection of drones escape their associations with surveillance and the military, becoming instead choreographed, disembodied instruments which take flight in the auditorium to create a profoundly immersive live music performance.

Set to explore and extend the link between art and technology like never before, LOOP>>60Hz will mark the final weekend of Digital Revolution – the Barbican’s immersive exhibition of art, design, film, music and videogames which will take over the Centre from Thursday 3 July.

‘Drone: a bleak tapestry of unholy noises, searing into the listeners ears and – with any luck – transporting them to a place they'll not want to leave for long while’ John Cale

Giselle Mynx: Girl

Brooklyn singer Giselle Mynx tells a true story about a Girl, a gentle slow pop song with an electronic twist that sounds quite a lot like early Nineties Madonna. Madge hasn't released anything half decent in years, so it's good to have someone who can deliver the goods. Nice blink-and-you'll-miss-it melancholic coda.

Froskull: Froskull

So is there any kind of memorable progressive rock coming out of Nashville, undisputed capital of country and western music? If you look hard enough you might run into Froskull, a band founded by Stephen Rockford Hammond. The current line up has been playing together since 2012, honing their skills and fine tuning a holistic approach that can go ballistic as well. They are a band looking up to the sky for inspiration, with song titles like Perihelion and Report From Ganymede and into themselves as well, linking the tunes with short instrumentals called Bardo (Tibetan for "intermediate state").

With a prominent grumbling electric guitar sound a la Yes and old school stereo effects they have opened a time capsule of vintage prog that doesn't sound dated at all. The accessible Should Have Known even has some commercial potential and could be passed off as a radio-friendly Marillion song. Purists fans will like the nod to King Crimson in the instrumental Alabaster.

Froskull:
Adam Dennis: drums
Brett Hammond: guitar
Stephen Rockford Hammond: guitar, keyboards, vocals
Jason Schond: bass

  3. Alabaster

  8. Report from Ganymede

Phish: The Freezer at Randall's Island (July 11-13)

Phish bring archival pop-up store The Freezer to New York City when they play at Randall's Island on July 11-13. Rare items are on sale and there will be a new vinyl release.

It's that time again to open the doors to The Freezer, an official Phish Archive merch store, at Randall's Island. The Freezer will feature a number of shirts, hard goods, posters and other items from Phish's past, available for purchase. All are original items from the band's collection, and not reprints. They include items from 1996-2002 and are extremely limited (we're talking 4-5 of each style). The WaterWheel Foundation will be the recipient of a percentage of all sales in The Freezer. You may remember how fast the Freezer thawed at Bader Field two years ago.

Everything in The Freezer has been archivally stored and preserved. In addition to Ts, we'll be offering a very limited number of rare posters from the Phish Archives (again, all part of their original runs; NOT reprints), including classic Jim Pollock posters. These posters will be available in very limited quantities and we're expecting them to go fast.

As if that wasn't enough, this year, we're happy to announce that The Freezer will play host to the JEMP Records Store, on site at Randall's Island. On Friday & Saturday, JEMP Records will be unleashing a new Phish vinyl release to the public, which will be available for the first time exclusively at Randall's Island. We'll announce details shortly!

JamBase picked up on an interview with Phish drummer Jon Fishman on WRFR in Maine. He discusses his musical heroes, making a living as a musician, rhythm, the gone missing second jam in Mike's Song and turning 50.

Deleyaman: The Edge

Euro-American darkwave band Deleyaman take their music very seriously, touching base with high culture and literature. They don't settle for run of the mill lyrics, but go for politics and poetry. Main man and multi-instrumentalist Aret Madilian keep his distance when he sings, not so much a frontman but a reporter speaking in hushed tones. A nice contrast with the dreamy delivery of Beatrice Valantin.

On their new album The Edge they sign about he economic meltdown, supply a wake up call to embrace real life (Hey Now), use poems by André Gide (Murdered Days and Juillet)and Cody C. Gates (Cygnus) and search for inner-peace. Their music music has been compared with Dead Can Dance, but there is also quite a bit of New Order and Siouxsie and the Banshees is the more bass oriented tracks like the album's closer Outspoken.

Hannah Thiem: Brym EP

Violinist Hannah Thiem straddles the fence between folk and electronic ambient music on her new EP Brym. She searches for new ways to implement a traditional instrument into modern day downtempo.

Rest assured, this is not boring New Age muzak, but the culmination of her musical travels, with Eastern European and Scandinavian music as the launchpad for her compositions: layered, cinematic soundscapes that dig deep.

Nausica: The Molecules Fall Closer

photo: Al Hajem

Art rock is a hit-or-miss genre. When executed in a poor fashion, the music is bogged down by pretentious breaks and arrangements leading nowhere. German/Dutch/Polish quartet Nausica have avoided all the pitfalls on their The Molecules Fall Closer, a smattering of adventurous tunes embedded in carefully crafted indie rock.

Kicking off with the angular, rough-around-the-edges Jane Doe, they take a breather with Marie. The catchy rhythm Black Jacket sounds familiar but can hold its own thanks to middle-eight leading into a crescendo of vocals and guitar. They saved the best for last: the soft-spoken Soldiers with double-tracked vocals on top of a lonesome guitar, and the jazzy final track with tough lyrics, World Wide, with an extended coda that you don't want to end. Recommended if you like Bettie Serveert and My Brightest Diamond.

Nausica:
Edita Karkoschka: vocals, piano
Tim Coehoorn: electric guitar
Marius Mathiszik: bass guitar
Jannis Knüpfer: drums

Tracks:
  1. Jane Doe
  2. Marie
  3. Black Jacke
  4. Soldiers
  5. World Wide

The Molecules Fall Closer is released thru Woda Kolonska.

Live dates:
  • 06/21 Ausser Haus Festival, Dresden (Freiberg), Germany
  • 07/05 tba, Arnhem, The Netherlands
  • 07/06 Festival der Aa, Schipborg, The Netherlands

Lou Reed: eBay Auction

Equipment used by Lou Reed is up for auction on eBay. Message from the official Facebook:

Over the past thirty years Lou Reed amassed a large collection of equipment in support of his many tours. While all of his most important guitars, amps, and effects will be kept by Sister Ray Enterprises for his archive, there are many pieces of musical gear and road cases that need to be sold. Over the next few weeks these items will be auctioned through eBay. The proceeds will go towards the work that is underway to develop the Lou Reed Archive.

Please support this effort by checking our eBay page. New items will be posted every few days. A wide variety of items will be available. All of these items were kept at Sister Ray Enterprises and were used by Lou and his band on tour. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to own a piece of music history.

If you live in or around NYC, we'll be listing select items for local pickup before they go up on eBay. You can sign up to receive these listings here.

Hopefully more interesting stuff will be added to the auction, besides the current listings of keyboards and a few effects thingies.

Words about music (343): Lemmy

People don't want to see the guy next door on the stage, they want to see a being from another planet. You want to see somebody you'd never meet in ordinary life.

The Shanks: "German Heavy Metal Girl" video

Canadian rock duo The Shanks pissed off the Turkish authorities with their video for German Heavy Metal Girl. They didn't appreciate to portrayal of the nation's founding father Mustafa Kemal Atatürk enjoying an alcoholic beverage (although the real one did drink). The clip features a girl driving around in a Trabant in Berlin who picks up Atatürk. The duo can follow their travels by staring at the bottom of their martinis. Spoiler alert: don't play guitar when running a bath. The clip was directed by Scott Montgomery.

Getting their song banned could be a blessing in disguise for the band, who might consider doing another pressing for their 7" single When My Ship Hits Christmas Day, with German Heavy Metal Girl on the B-side.

The Mercy Beat: The Mercy Beat

A mix of British Sixties R&B and modern day dance, that's what LA trio The Mercy Beat are supposed to sound like. Not true, their self-titled debut EP is smack in the middle of the mainstream, with a bubbling synth back beat and falsetto vocals. Boy band fodder posing as a hipster band. Like John Cusack says in High Fidelity: "I don't wanna hear old sad bastard music, Barry, I just want something I can ignore". This band will do.

The Mercy Beat is released thru Oskar Recordings.

  1. An Act of Mercy

  3. Fool for a Fool

Starar: Renegade Heart

UK indie electronic duo Starar used a cornucopia of sounds for their new single Renegade Heart. Singer Jenna Starar and multi-instrumentalist Steven Starar have been fiddling with the volume controls like there was no tomorrow. A bit of pop, a bit of funk and quite a bit of stop-and-start synth New Wave clamor for attention. Quite a chance of pace after the rather mellow Uubelievable.

Renegade Heart is a self-released single. Stream it via Soundcloud.

  • 06/28 The Dog and Bone, Lincoln

HCTF review of Unbelievable.

Lions In The Street: Just a Little Bit More

Lions In The Street have to tons of legal crap over the years, but they always kept their sights on their core business: playing Stones-y, dirty rock 'n' roll. The Vancouver quartet assembled their latest songs for Just a Little Bit More, a free full-length. They hit the ground running with the 7 minute plus blues stomper Down In The Hole, vinyl crackling noises included. This an album build upon the loud-quiet-loud paradigms, with rock songs being followed by slower, mostly acoustic tracks like the title track.

They are a great bar band with a knack for catchy tunes, looking for a break. With one feet in rock (Mine Ain't Yours) and the other in country (One Way Street), they go for the best of both worlds. It's nice to be an underground favorite who keep open tuning alive, but it won't pay the rent.

Lions In The Street:
Chris Kinnon: guitar, vocals
Sean Casey: guitar
Enzo Figliuzzi: bass
Jeff Kinnon: drums, organ

Just a Little Bit More is a self-released album. Free download from Noisetrade.

Tracks:
  1. Down In The Hole
  2. Just a Little Bit More
  3. Mine Ain't Yours
  4. Time Can't Change How We Started
  5. I Know I've Been Changed
  6. Mr. Coal (Live at SXSW)
  7. One Way Street
  8. Stand And Wait
