Maggie Brown: Maggie Brown

Amsterdam based indie band Maggie Brown have found a middle ground between complexity and accessibility on their self-titled debut album. With elements of post-rock and a gift for intricate melodies they heap layer upon layer with the two guitars riding on top. Take note of the exquisite use of echo as an extension of Randy Derkhof's slide guitar. Lead singer Marcel Hulst can go up and the down scales without blinking an eye.

The pre-eminent mood of the songs is loneliness and trying to fit in: Atlantic is about feeling displaced in Hollywood; Permanent Resident Card is about crossing mental and geographical borders. Maggie Brown is a welcome addition to collections of smart indie pop. In years to come it might be considered a classic that outshines contemporary Dutch competitors like Moss. Let The Golden Age begin.

Maggie Brown:
Marcel Hulst: vocals, guitar, ukeleleh
Randy Derkhof: slide guitar
Pascal van Baren: drums
Freek Broekhuijsen: bass
Friso Schmid: piano
