Maor Nawi: "Broken" & "Mistake" videos

Israeli singer-songwriter Maor Nawi has made videos for Broken and Mistake, two singles from her forthcoming debut album Go!. Laidback sad songs about that perennial subject matter: heartbreak.

With ample use of gentle percussion and slide guitar Nawi caters to the indie crowd who can appreciate instantly hummable melodies as a change of pace. Broken hints at psychedelic pop while Mistake gets close to mainstream soft rock.

Maor Naw: vocals
Amit Itzchak: guitars
Sshmulik Daniel: bass, drums, programming and percussion
Eldad Zitrin: keyboards, Hammond

Broken and Mistake are self-released singles. Buy them from her website.

[1] Unfinished
Notes: This show was webcast via LivePhish. The second set was preceded by Call to the Post teases. Down with Disease contiained What's the Use? teases and was unfinished. Page played the guitar part of The Horse on piano while Trey sang. Following The Horse, the band acted as if the show was over before starting to play Silent in the Morning. Trey then explained that by pretending to not play Silent and end the show, they were making a joke, given their not playing The Horse to precede Silent in recent versions. Having to explain this "joke" prompted Trey to tell the story of performing In A Hole back in the 1980's. Fish suggested they play In A Hole, but Trey said he could not remember it. He agreed to sing the chorus, however, and sang part of it briefly (emphasizing the pun on the "a hole" lyric) while Fish and Page played a small part of the music of the song's chorus. "It's just as funny as it was 30 years ago," Page noted. "Thank you for laughing." Fluffhead contained a Dave's Energy Guide tease.

Words about music (350): John Entwistle

It wasn't really bass players that inspired me. An early influence was Duane Eddy because I always considered his stuff as sounding like bass solos. Plus, we were a three-piece band with a singer, so we had a lot of ground to cover. I always went to play that way and it helped my sound cut through all the rest of the stuff that was happening. I eventually became a lead bass player.

Broeder Dieleman: Gloria

photo: Mechteld Jansen

Broeder Dieleman, nom-de-plume of Dutch folk singer Tonnie Dieleman, grew up in a strict environment. No sex, drugs or rock 'n' roll, but fire and brimstone. The Dutch reformed church turned out to be in blessing in disguise, inspiring him to write to gentle songs sung in the dialect of Zeeuws Vlaanderen - think sprawling polders, straight roads and and trees standing in line. His music is sparse and minimal, with banjo and piano as his main instruments.

His new album Gloria is about love, nature and religion, not necessarily in that order. He doesn't want to get even, but he look upon the church elders as a group of people whose intentions he will never fully grasp. They remain a mystery to him and the same goes for the fairer sex. Dieleman feels more comfortable when he sings about birds, like the great cormorants (Aalscholvers) and the jackdaw (Kauwtje).

By recording the album in his own home the songs have an intimacy that would have eluded him in the studio. Outside noises were allowed to creep in, like the jackdaws having a row in Zusterstraat. Unfamiliar the Dutch language in general or this particular dialect in particular? Don't let it put you off. Dieleman has a voice that gets his message across. There's plenty of Grace (Genade genoeg) for everyone, no matter what your personal beliefs are.

Gloria is released through Snowstar Records. Release date: September 5th.

Tracks:
  1. Gloria
  2. Aalscholvers
  3. Kauwtje

Bee vs. Moth: Problems with Crowds

photo: Will Branch

Genre redefining bands are rare, but Austin based trio Bee vs. Moth has found a new way to present jazz. Throw in a bit of cheesy organ, dip it in DIY punk attitude and get freaky sounding music about halfway Frank Zappa and The Residents. Try to dance to it and you will fall over. Problems with Crowds serves as a taster for their new album Shelter in Place. To Hell with genres and boundaries, find a groove and fuck it up. No safety-nets, no parachutes, but great skill and lots of guts.

Further proof of their risk taking is a joint project with The Invincible Czars to turn Mussorgsky Pictures at an Exhibition into a jazz rock piece of sorts. Want to bet that it will be lot more interesting than the Emerson, Lake and Palmer version?

Bee vs. Moth:
James Fidlon: guitar
Philip Moody: electric & upright bass
Sarah Norris: drums, percussion

Trey Anastasio goes symphonic: new piece "Petrichor" premieres on short orchestral run

Tow years in the making Trey Anastasio's new piece for orchestra and guitar Petrichor gets an outing on a short tour, hitting three cities in September. Composer and arranger Don Hart, his go-to-guy to orchestrate his ideas, was once again on hand to help out.

Trey Anastasio will premiere Petrichor, an ambitious new piece for guitar and orchestra, on his three-city orchestral West Coast run this fall. Petrichor will have its world premiere on September 9 at Portland’s Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, where Anastasio will be joined by the Oregon Symphony. He will perform with the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall on September 11 and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on September 26. Scott Dunn of the L.A. Philharmonic, who partnered with Anastasio on his 2012 orchestral tour, will conduct all three performances. The program will also feature orchestral versions of songs by Phish and from Anastasio’s solo repertoire. Ticket are on sale now for all three performances.

Anastasio began composing Petrichor in November of 2012. In his spare moments, he began working out the melodies, using his iPhone to capture hundreds of voice memos. Over the course of two years, that early inspiration evolved into an intricate, thought-provoking opus. Anastasio will perform as a member of the orchestra, on electric guitar. Petrichor was orchestrated by Don Hart, who has collaborated with Anastasio on numerous classical projects.
Live dates:
  • 09/09 Portland, OR @ Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall w/ the Oregon Symphony
  • 09/11 Seattle, WA @ Benaroya Hall w/ the Seattle Symphony
  • 09/26 Los Angeles, CA @ Hollywood Bowl w/ the Los Angeles Philharmonic

City Reign: When You Got It All

Manchester quartet City Reign have released When You Got It All, another single from their forthcoming new album. The melodic Mancunians go melancholic with fast paced, tongue twisting lyrics. The vocals sound a bit muffled on this one and get lost sometimes in the rather prominent drums. They might want to go back to the master tracks and get the balance right on a track that shows a lot promise

When You Got It All will be released on Car Boot Records. Release date: September 22. Stream via Soundcloud.

Ryan Ashton: bass
Duncan Bolton: drums
Chris Bull: guitar and vocals
Michael Grice: lead guitar

Sväva: We Have Just The Life We Want

Half of Dutch indie dreampop band Sväva made a trip to Scotland two years ago. Guitarists Bente Hout and Michelle Hindriks. They connected musically and began writing songs of together. Aftrnr hitchhiking all the way back to their hometown Leeuwarden, they formed a band with guitarist Olivier Copini and drummer Jelmer Terwal.

Sväva is Swedish for floating, which fits the band's material like a glove. Hout's crystal clear voice sounds like it is gently hovering above the music. The two guitarists never get in each others way - the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Their delicate interplay deserves a pair of decent headphones. Recommended for fans of Her Vanished Grace and Thrushes.

Michelle Hindriks: guitar

Razorhouse: Neu Sensation

Chicago’s Razorhouse peddles messed up glamrock with an electronic twist. Band leader Mark J. Panick (The Bonemen of Barumba, Chac Mool, Revolting Cocks) has set it up as a roundabout, with other musicians hopping on and off. On the new single Neu Sensation it's just him on acoustic guitar and vocals, with Danny Shaffer on electric guitar. Engineer Howie Beno lent a hand on keyboards and background noises. Panick's instanlty recognisable devil-may-care voice will appeal to the suburban slacker rock crowd.

The single will be included on the band's second EP, Codex Du. Panick named his band after the Mayan spiritual teachings in the Popul Vuh. Each tome of teachings is referenced to as a codex, but thankfully there is no talk about the world going to end or any other New Age inspired crap,

Neu Sensation is released on Heat Shield Records.

Phish: "A Picture Of Nectar" on vinyl 09/16

Phish: A Picture Of Nectar

After the limited release at The Freezer shop at the shows on Randall’s Island (June 11 & 12) Phish will release their third studio album A Picture Of Nectar on vinyl to the general public on September 16th. Comes with a MP3 download culled from the vinyl master:

On September 16th, Phish will release A Picture Of Nectar, the band’s third full-length studio album, as a Limited Edition Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set at Phish Dry Goods and stores across the country. The LE Deluxe 2-LP vinyl set is limited to 7,500 individually numbered copies. To pre-order from Phish Dry Goods. Bundles with t-shirts are also available.

A Picture Of Nectar was recorded in 1991 at White Crow Studios in Burlington, Vermont on 24-track 2? tape and mixed to 1/2? stereo reels. This was the band’s major label debut and the start of a long relationship with Elektra. It was also their tribute to Nectar Rorris, owner of Nectar’s in Burlington, where Phish played many multiple night stands in the 1980?s that in their words “taught us how to play.”

The material displayed the growing extent and diversity of Phish’s talents honed throughout eight years of rehearsals and hundreds of live shows. Twenty two years later, nearly every song on A Picture Of Nectar is still in live rotation today.

A Picture Of Nectar was mastered by Bob Ludwig and released by Elektra February 18, 1992 on CD and cassette. The album went on to be certified Gold. In 2014, Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering cut the lacquers from the original stereo master reels for the vinyl edition. Each LP is pressed onto 180g audiophile grade vinyl and includes a free MP3 download of the album (transferred from the vinyl master).

Baby Scream: "Haters Will Hate" b/w "I Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream"

It's been awhile since Argentinian power pop project Baby Scream released something new. Their latest two albums were a Best Of and an expanded edition of their self-titled album. The new single Haters Will Hate b/w I Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream serves as the forerunner for new full-length that is pencilled in for a January 2015 release.

Main man Juan Pablo Mazzola is big John Lennon fan and the subdued Haters Will Hate aims high with its lyrics painting a future that isn't particularly bright. Don't Wanna Wake Up From This Dream show a glimmer of hope, but it's content is pretty bleak as well. Nick Schinder takes care of the piano and strings and by downsizing to a duo Baby Scream has reinvented themselves as a soft-spoken and serious act. Recommended if you like Chris Bell and Robyn Hitchcock.

Juan Pablo Mazzola: vocals, acoustic guitar, bass, lead guitar
Nick Schinder: backing vocals, piano, strings

Stellar Lane: Follow Your Mind

When grunge went global in the early Nineties, thousands of bands were formed to play their version of DIY heartfelt garage rock. The genre continues to inspire and Tel Aviv quintet Stellar Lane have picked the heavy handed melodies of Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots as their frames of reference on their new EP Follow Your Mind.

Their lyrics deserve a closer look: Balloons takes a harsh look at consumerism and Fairy Tale is a love song about a doomed relation. The latter was produced by Tim Palmer (of Pearl Jam's seminal album Ten fame), but the other tracks sound a lot more alive, especially the power ballad No One with its proggy guitar lines and wall-to-wall keyboards.

DAWA: This Should Work

Austrian acoustic folk rock quartet DAWA are the kind of band who will be playing on the smaller stages at Summer festivals, but who will sell all their merchandise to those who took the trouble to check them out. What's not to like about a band with luscious harmonies, a sad cello and a cajón to take care of the bottom end?

They named their new album This Should Work and it does. The upbeat Relief and Social Suicide have written live favorite all over them. Old school folkies will embrace Frei and Revolution. Recommended if you like the Walkabouts and Richard Thompson.

DAWA:
John Dawa: vocals, guitar
Barbara Wiesinger: vocals, percussion
Laura Pudelek: cello
Norbert Kröll: cajón, glockenspiel, percussion

This Should Work is a self-released album. CD: Las Vegas Records. Digital: iTunes.

  1. Some Things are different
  2. Take a breath
  3. Relief

In-Flight Safety: Animals

In-Flight Safety turns it up just a bit on their new single Animals. While Destroy was lacking urgency, the Halifax quartet picks a more prominent guitar sound. The vocals, however, are still clean-cut and mainstream. Harmless rock for people who don't know rock. Expect more of the same on their forthcoming album Conversationalist, out on September 22 via Conehead (UK) and Ooh La La Records US.

Elephant Stone: The Three Poisons

Elephant Stone
photo: Bowen Stead & Daniel Barkley

Montreal psychedelic raga rock trio Elephant Stone have made another retro album. The Three Poisons sounds like it was recorded in 1967, with Rishi Dhir's sitar leading the way. Tons of echo, mostly melancholic songs and knee deep in textures. This band knows how to spin an interesting the middle-eight and keep the groove going through all 11 seamlessly flowing tracks.

Gabriel Lambert had to take care of all the guitar parts after Stephen Venkatarangam left the band, and he came up with enough ideas to frustrate music students. But it is drummer Miles Dupire who should be in the spotlight, with his grade A dry sound that keeps the songs on check, grounding them and pushing them as well.

Elephant Stone:
Rishi Dhir: vocals, bass, sitar
Gabriel Lambert: guitar, backing vocals
Miles Dupire: drums
Malika Tirolien: backing vocals on Knock You From Yr Mountain.

Three Poisons will be released on August 25th via 2014 on Hidden Pony Records (US/UK/EU) and V2 (BENELUX). First 500 vinyl LPs are numbered and come in red/white marble vinyl. First 200 vinyl LPs and first 100 CDs are signed by the band.

Tracks:
  1. Motherless Child (Love's Not For War)
  2. Knock You From Yr Mountain
  3. All is Burning
  4. Worlds Don't Begin And End With You
  5. Wayward Son
  6. Intermediate State
  7. Child Of Nature (Om Namah Sivaya)
  8. Living For Something
  9. Three Poisons
  10. Echo & The Machine
  11. Between the Lines

ZAPPATiKA: We're Not Alone

Anglo-Dutch band ZAPPATiKA recorded a cover of We're Not Alone. Originally released as an instrumental on The Man from Utopia - Frank Zappa had written a few words, but they were never used. They came up with a full set of lyrics themselves. Nice touch to make Stevie (Vai) the protagonist. He was Zappa's resident guitar at that time. Mary of course is named after Mary Lou, the girl that is mentioned in the title of the 1950s song The Man from Utopia Meets Mary Lou.

They stick close to the original musical arrangement. Singer Zap McInnes sounds at ease and relaxed, with high pitched backing vocals that were an instantly recognisable trademark of Zappa's music.

The track was originally released on Rare Episodes - Frank Zappa’s unmined nuggets released on Cordelia Records. The tweaked single version can be bought via Reverbnation.

Well, Stevie isn't dumb, when it comes to the girls,
He'll take his little thumb and he'll give 'em a whirl,
Stevie isn't dumb, he'll take his little thumb,
And you can ride it all night loo-oong!

Now, Mary was a girl with a twist in her mind,
But Stevie didn't care, cuz she made him feel fine,
He had his little thumb, connected to her plum,
You shoulda heard her scream for moo-oore !

She had a hairbrush with a dildo on the end of it ,
She wanted Stevie to go in and out a little bit
But he decided that an even better way to go
Was a banana and the hairbrush going stereo

He took the challenge and he revved them up to warp nine,
She said that he should be a porno-poocher all the time,
Then Stevie giggled and adjusted his bikini shorts
and shifted Mary into Rubber Love and Water sports,

Stevie isn't dumb when it comes to the girls,
He'll take his little thumb and he'll give 'em a whirl
Stevie isn't dumb,he'll take his little thumb,
and you can ride it all night looo--oong!
Live date:

The Persian Leaps: Drive Drive Delay

St. Paul, MN indie noise pop band The Persian Leaps are down to a trio on their new EP Drive Drive Delay. They had to tighten up their sound a bit and The Smiths no longer loom large on their alternative college rockers.

While retaining their knack for melody Hüsker Du, The Replacements and Dinosaur Jr come to fore in (Goodbye to) South Carolina and Truth = Consequences. Lead single Pretty Boy, with its early REM feel, is a dead ringer for heavy rotation on alternative late night radio.

The Persian Leaps:
Drew Forsberg: vocals, guitar
Brad Hendrickson: bass, vocals, additional guitar on "Pretty Boy"
Mike McCloskey: drums, vocals

Drive Drive Delay will be released on September 12, 2014 via Land Ski Records.

  1. Fire Starter
  2. Pretty Boy
  3. (Goodbye to) South Carolina
  4. Truth = Consequences
  5. Permission

Memory In Plant: Shame On Me

Israeli neo-psychedelic trio Memory In Plant are sharing Shame On Me, another single from their forthcoming full-length An Epic Triumph. Yehiel Hamou, Chen Firsel and Imri Cohen have crammed a plethora of sounds and genres into this one - Krautrock, fuzzy electronics, freak out rock, a menacing bass bit, singled out guitar notes and even a bit of rap drenched in reverb and echo. It's a rather short, but exhausting listening experience. Not for the squeamish.

Shame On Me is self-released single. Buy it (pay-what-you-want) from their website.

Bella Loka: Escape

photo: Auxphoto

Tea & David Boothby are Bella Loka, an electropop based in Camden Town, London. Tea writes all their stuff and sings, plays guitar & piano, while David takes care of the guitar and arranging. They crowdfunded their debut EP Escape, raising enough money to record at Abbey Road Studios with in-house producers Rob Cass & Pearse MacIntyre.

Escape is mostly mainstream pop with an electronic twist, with hints of Soft Cell, Yazoo and Propaganda. The vocals could have used less effects and studio wizardry, but the back beat is irresistible. Bella Loka shows lots of potential, and are likely to appeal to the general public who will dig Alive). Music buffs will give the thumbs up to the haunting Where Are All The Ladies?

Escape is a self-released EP. Eelease date: September 2nd.

Primus: "Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble" 10/21

Can you reinvent the soundtrack of a beloved movie classic? Primus will try on their new album Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble (October 21 on ATO Records). A twisted musical ensemble takes on a twisted movie. Mind you: this is the 1971 version staring Gene wilder, not the flawed 2005 remake directed by Tim Burton - man man Les Claypool hates that one. The songs were premiered at their 2013 NYE show at the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. The album features the Fungi Ensemble to fill out the sound; Mike Dillon is on marimba & percussion, and Sam Bass is on cello.

Tim "Herb" Alexander is back on drums for this album marking his first studio appearance in 19 years. He recently underwent successful heart surgery and he is expected to be joining Claypool and Larry "Ler" LaLonde on stage when the Chocolate tour kicks off in October. Tool's Danny Carvey will replace him for the three September dates.

The album is available for preorder and yes, there are five golden ones for lucky buyers of the vinyl version.

Words about music (348): Colin Blunstone

I find it very exciting to take a song from that initial spark of inspiration through to recording it and then eventually take it out onto the stage and play it live in front of an audience. I think that’s one of the most exciting things about being in the music business—if you can do that. I’ve never been a particularly prolific writer; it’s very hard for me to write songs. But when I’m fortunate enough to do it, I think it’s a very thrilling situation.

Colin Blunstone
