Rock 'n' roll never died, but there aren't that many bands around who can build upon the fundamental rules and come up with fresh material. Enter The Bellfuries, a quartet from Austin, TX, whose members wrote nine fresh tunes for their Workingman's Bellfuries (a nod to the Grateful Dead since they are so fond of being a touring band as well). They added The Beatles' She's A Woman, giving it a Creedence Clearwater Revival mood while they were at it, and the F. Bryant penned oldie Baltimore.
The keyword for their music is groove, mixing rockabilly with country and a bit of jazz. Even then the lyrics are sad, the music continues to sparkle pushed forward by the upright bass, jangling guitar lines (think Johnny Marr transported to the late Fifties) and swinging drums.
Inject some fresh blood into the jukebox by inserting tracks like Make The Mystery No More that sounds like a long lost Everly Brothers song, or the superb lament Letter To My Maybe Baby. Next thing you know you will find yourself checking out listings of cars with fins and chrome on eBay.
The Bellfuries:
Joey Simeone: vocals, guitar
Jeff Seaver: upright & electric Bass
Mike Molnar: lead guitar
Chris Sensat: drums, vocals
