Hoist comes to vinyl for Record Store Day. The fifth Phish studio album will be released as a 2LP on orange splatter colored vinyl:
On Record Store Day 2016, Phish will release “Hoist”, the band’s fifth full-length studio album, as a limited, individually numbered, 180g 2-LP orange splatter colored vinyl set, available exclusively at participating independently owned record stores across the country. Record Store Day is Saturday, April 16.
Hoist was recorded on 24-track 2″ reels in October-November 1993 at American Recording Co. in Calabasas, California. Three singles were released from Hoist – “Down With Disease”, “Sample In A Jar” and “Julius” and all three remain in common rotation at Phish shows. Live tracks from an April 21, 1993 Columbus, Ohio rendition of “Split Open And Melt” were blended with studio tracks including parts of “Yerushalayim Shel Zahav” and effects to create the experimental D Side, “Demand.”
Bass player Mike Gordon directed their first (and last) music video. Down With Disease failed to make a lasting impression on the popular music networks back then, but the song remins a live favorite and is used as a launch pad for extensive jamming.
