A live performance can be a make-or-break event for a band. No tons of takes or second guessing a fellow band member's intentions. Dutch "explosive Americana" band Rob Klerkx & The Secret pass the test with flying colours on their latest release Live at IJland Studio. The Nick Cave-esque story telling songs Shadows and Final Desire are scary in a good way. After a nod to the intro of Led Zeppelin's No Quarter the call-and-response vocals in the folk rock ballad Virginia hover on top of the keyboards.
Fronted by singer/guitarist Rob Klerkx (drummer in Dutch bands Moke and Paulusma) the band have been playing together since 2006. Live at IJland Studio is a nice summary of their five studio albums of original tunes and their first decade as a working band. Rob Klerkx & The Secret are a band that can incorporate a bit of well-placed roughness into a crystal clear mix. Tension and release make a good band. And when they can cut it live - a great band.
