A meeting of musical mates happened at the Nutclough Tavern in Hebden Bridge on the 23rd of April when Pete Scullion joined Colin Robinson's one-man band Jumble Hole Clough for a set of improvised instrumentals. They were founders of Big Block 454 in 1988 and hadn't shared the stage since 2002.
Robinson has become a regular fixture during the Saturday night happenings at the Nutclough Tavern and a steady flow of live recordings from his appearances have found their way to Bandcamp. Besides his Jumble Hole Clough solo output there may new releases of his varous collaborations (Churn Milk Joan, The Clog Hunt Occasional Collapsing Knitting Society and Doggerland). And, who knows, even a new Big Block 454 album.
The reunion of two like-minded avant-garde guitar players went smoothly, with Robinson and Scullion going for a Zappa-esque tone for Planting potatoes so vigorously, I broke my trowel, Red sky at night, Moss Side's alight before delving into ambient funk - with a few stray Brian May and Robert Fripp notes - in Brian Blessed Talking In His sleep.
The sexy, twisted jazz funk The records jumped as they danced could be sneaked into a set of a DJ willing to take some risks, and the same goes for Nurkish Delight that is driven forward by well-placed syncopation and a nod to South-American rhythms. Avant-garde lovers shouldn't be worried though. Robinson and Scullion wrapped up the show with the good old guitar work-out Four geese fighting on the towpath, a pleasant conversation of two musicians who bridged the gap of a 14-year hiatus without blinking an eye. Live at the Nutclough with Pete Scullion, 23rd April 2016 is the document of a memorable night.
