Little Person: Send Me Your Nots

San Francisco pop-rock duo Little Person invited a bunch of their friends and relatives to provide backing vocals on their new single Send Me Your Nots, a throwback to the heyday of colourful late Sixties pocket symphonies.

The Weinbach brothers have uncanny knack for arranging their songs and finding complex yet accessible melodies, honouring the traditions of orchestral pop. Recommended if you like the Beach Boys and the former residents of Laurel Canyon.

Surf Rock is Dead: In Between

NYC based American-Australian neo-new wave duo Surf Rock is Dead keep at it with their retro sound. In Between is their most radiofriendly single to date, a hybrid of echo-heavy power pop and indie rhythms. A song for those who missed out on the Eigthies or are craving for a revival.

Alter Ness: Premonition

Italian alt-folk trio Alter Ness go through various moods on their new single Premonition. They kick off in full UK Seventies folk style, lean to progressive pastoral rock a la Gabriel-era Genesis, switch gears for an intermission dominated by clarinet and bring it home to a foreboding finish.

The track serves a s taster for their new album Ticking Clocks. If this track is an indication of what's to come, it will be a dark and beautiful album.

Anat Spiegel: "Hatchets" live video

Watch Anat Spiegel perform Hatchets live @ Gemeenlandshuis in Amsterdam. She is accompanier by Tiziana Pintus, Max Knigge and Antonis Pratsinakis. The song didn't make the cut for her solo album South of Somewhere, but is highly likely that it will be performed at the album release party show on December 1st @ Noorderlicht in Amsterdam. Veludo Planes: Luna

English indie rockers Veludo Planes have inserted quite a few melodic twists and turns into their second singel Luna and are evolving rapidly as a band. Their previous one Lonesick Lullaby sounded a lot like Oasis, but now they rely on their two-guitar call-and-response capabilities and they have turned up the bass as well, the latter providing a chugging backbeat straight from The Cure songbook.

Luna is a self-released single and available through all the usual digital outlets.

Kate Bush: Interview on BBC6

It's pretty rare for the reclusive Kate Bush to grant an interview. She talked to BBC6 about her new live album Before the Dawn, a 3-disc set culled from her residency @ Eventim Apollo, Hammersmith, London in 2014. Interviewer Matt Everitt:

Kate Bush is without doubt one of the most original and gifted musicians and producers of all time. Having loved her music my whole life and been lucky enough to witness her live comeback, it was incredible to have an opportunity to find out her reasons behind performing again, how she brought a hugely demanding and ambitious conceptual vision to the stage, and of course, just to meet the person behind so many wonderful songs.

Cowtown: Paranormal Romance

Post-punk trio Cowtown are in a hurry of their fourth album Paranormal Romance, making their way through twelve songs in about 22 minutes. The Leeds band dabbles a bit in surf, insert a snippet of the Bangles' Walk Like An Egyptian ( "Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh") into Tweak, before moving back to safer Ramones territory, They love to double-track their vocals, smoothing out their rough-and-ready sound, with Motivational Speaker and Castle Greyscale as the prime examples. The latter sounds like a nifty mashup of the Cramps, the Pixies and They Might Be Giants.

Paranormal Romance is a fun album, a summary of the band members record collections. It all sounds familiar and no doubt they will kill with it live. Once the crowd has locked into their grove, they can keep the same dance going for pretty much all of the show. Press repeat if you want more.

ACTRESE: Upper East Siders

The Eighties were a bleak and ugly decade. A lot of the music was rather cold and harsh (or over-produced which is worse). London based singer ACTRESE took the electronics of that bygone era to create Upper East Siders, a slacker song that gets under your skin.

It's a thowback to the underground that never made ito the mainstream back then; aloof, quirky and cut up with intermittent drums patterns. Timeless weirdness that will be appreciated by old school synth lovers and collectors of no wave and twisted funk.

Proof I Exist: Last Anthem

Cleveland rocker and multi-instrumentalist Paul Kulis has released Last Anthem. His Proof I Exist project serves as a vessel for genuine worries about the current state of affairs in the USA. Despite its sombre title there is glimmer of hope for better days, where people will offer each other a helping hand instead of building a wall.

Latimer House: Hey!

Pop rockers Latimer House are singing about serios issues on their new album Hey! Orange Light tackles pollution and economics going haywire. Do people stil take the time to dream or think about the onsequences of digesting bite-sized Content? Singer Joe Cook may sound like he is relaxed pretty much all of the time, but he is addressing genuine concerns. It's not all politics however - Oh Yeah and Fall are love songs that don't beat around the bush.

Latimer House follows the path laid out by Big Star, The Stanglers and The Replacements - serious bands who can also sing a love song without being labeled as a mainstream sell-out act. And last but not least, the album contains a music trivia question that will cause quite a lot of head-scratching during a pub quiz. Which song mentions a David Bowie tune, The Beatles best known cover song and the last relevant Genesis live album? Answer: Race The Dogs.

Fervid: Nowhere To Turn

Dutch rock quartet Fervid have a couple of rough changes on their new single Nowhere To Turn and the background vocals are so-so, but the energy and anger blow away those flaws. Garage rock with a hint of metal and Weezer.

Fervid:
Pascal Derogee: bass, vocals
Steef Rademarker: guitar
Otto van Gemert: guitar, vocals
Casper Rosenquist: drums, percussion, vocals

Fascinations Grand Chorus: Actor/Actress

Brooklyn retro-pop duo Fascinations Grand Chorus channel the psychedelic West Coast sound and the melodic sensibilities of the Zombies on their new EP Actor/Actress.

Stephanie Cupo (vocals/keyboards) and Andrew Pierce (drums) have a knack for writing happy-sad songs, telling stories about rocky relationships, wrapped in lush keyboards and quite a bit of echo that will appeal to hippies and surfers of all ages. Deleyaman: The lover, The stars & The citadel

photo: Azam Ali
BEST OF 2016
2
HCTF

French-American darkwave duo Deleyaman can take the words of La Plaine. a 19th century poem written by Paul Verlaine and turn it into a contemporary chanson. Update Paul Eluard's L'Amoureuse? No problem. And finally their biggest reinvention coup: tackling Pierre de Marbeuf's La Mer et L'Amour, the first half of À Philis, a double sonnet written in the 17th century.

Multi-instrumentalist Aret Madilian and singer Beatrice Valantin don't take shortcuts on their new album The lover, The stars & The citadel. The lyrics are laid out on a bed of intricate soft music, augmented by carefully sound effects - a door opens, the drop of needle. All the shopping in the library of great French poetry aside, their own material is of the highest standard also. The Sisters of Mercy-alike Secret Treasures is a tribute to all those in need of shelter in an age of war stricken regions. Summer Flower questions the unavoidable decay of great beauty. Dead Can Dance fans should take note of Brendan Perry contributing Greek bouzouki to the orchestral beauty of Escape, an ambigious tale of a woman who tries to get away from it all.

Brian Eno: new ambient album "Reflection"

photo: Shamil Tanna

Brian Eno will release Reflection, a new ambient album on January 1, 2017 via Warp (2LP, CD and digital). It's one long piece (54 minutes). Eno on this new release:

Reflection is the latest work in a long series. It started (as far as record releases are concerned) with Discreet Music in 1975 ( - or did it start with the first Fripp and Eno album in 1973? Or did it start with the first original piece of music I ever made, at Ipswich Art School in 1965 - recordings of a metal lampshade slowed down to half and quarter speed, all overlaid?)

Anyway, it’s the music that I later called ‘Ambient’. I don’t think I understand what that term stands for anymore - it seems to have swollen to accommodate some quite unexpected bedfellows - but I still use it to distinguish it from pieces of music that have fixed duration and rhythmically connected, locked together elements.

Mike Gordon; interview on JamBase.com

Mike Gordon discusses his upcoming tour and keeping it fresh while jamming in an interview on JamBase.com:

You climb inside one part of the song, the bridge, and you bask in it. To be able to do that, in terms of improvising in a jam and going onto the next thing, you’re saying let’s take this little bridge and let it be stretched out and improvised. We can bask in it and enjoy it. Sometimes it’s the subtlest tweaks like that. It’s not major open-heart surgery, it’s little tweaks. But it’s important to me. If it all sounds the same, an entire repertoire starts to sound old even if it’s not old.

He will be playing with Scott Murawski (guitar), Craig Myers (percussion), Robert Walter (keyboards) and John Kimock (drums). The tour kicks off in St, Louis on November 18th and ends with three-night stand at The Sinclair in Cambridge (December 9-11).

Azure Hiptronics: Ignacio

Italian-Dutch jazz band Azure Hiptronics take their out-of-the-box approach to the next level on their new album Ignacio. Robotic vocals dominate Work Out Something and Easier Each Time, while the title track switches between prog guitar rock and the sunny soundtrack for a late Sixties French 'policier'.

The band invited a couple of guest vocalists to broaden their musical palette even further. Maria Marin adds a bit of flamenco and Bachir Charaf owns Airing, which would have been a rather bland piano piece without her contribution. To make the transitions between these various moods a little less abrupt, they have inserted a couple of short introductory snippets (fun fact: the first one, Thgie Neves, was lifted from the final track Seven Eight and is played backwards after being transposed to the key of Work Out Something).

Jim White: crowdfunding campaign for his new album

Alt-country American singer-songwriter and guitarist Jim White has launched a crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMusic to cover the recording costs of his new album. Plenty of perks are available, including out-of-print albums, pieces of his visual art and - for folks with deeper pockets - house concerts:

I’m making a new record here. It’s filled with all I have to offer, both in words and music. At this point the project is about half done and to cut to the chase, I’m not much for planning ahead particularly when it involves money. I was storming my way through this musical journey when I just just flat ran out of resources. I’d hoped to keep things simple and fund the record by myself, but my life savings have dwindled down to nothing and the project is far from complete.

Churn Milk Joan: The Kitchen Is Full Of Marimbas

American Richard Knutson (Plum Flower Embroidery. Neutral Sons, The Chacers) and Englishman Colin Robinson (Big Block 454, Jumble Hole Clough) have found the time to record another Churn Milk Joan album. As per usual The Kitchen Is Full Of Marimbas is all over the place, but there is a method in their avant-garde post-rcok funk ambient madness. Be prepared for sexual innuendo (he's a Rude Mermaid), a percussive Eric Burdon & War meets Captain Beefheart lullaby (Fuzzy Baby), and aloof Psychoactive Twins mixing Pulp with the Velvets for an expected North African dance routine.

Knutson and Robinson can use the sound of anything, banging on a wide range of unsuspecting objects besides the usual marimba, guitar, bass, keyboard, soprano sax, and saxonet. It's perfectly plausible to think they didn't just settle for Looking At My Dusty Tagine, but also found a way to incorporate a noise created by said kitchen utensil as well. The wobbly time signature of X-Mas Song won't make the charts during the holiday season, but fans of Primus and The Residents will love it. The Kitchen Is Full Of Marimbas itself is short and quirky ditty that will put a smile on the faces of toddlers, who are not aware of musical do's and don'ts just yet, and avant-garde loving adults who worked very hard to reach that level again.

Lelio Padovani: Waves

Italian composer and guitar teacher Lelio Padovani has the fluidity of Steve Vai mixed with prog inklings of Steve Wilson. His new EP Waves is a the crossroads of progressive rock and neo-classical music. His first love is the guitar, but synths are a close second. Kicking off with Time Traveler he channels the Eighties, going over the top with Jean=Michel Jarre-alike wall of keyboards, leaving just enough space for the guitar to make its mark.

The sound of Mike Oldfield and Brian May seeps through the melancholic Siren Song, an alluring come-hither composition, with a tugging cymbal leading the way. The acoustic Sunday brings out his appreciation for Baroque music and it's showcase for his impeccable fretwork - a skill that his students will have a hard time to follow. The title track is a nod to the works of Rhys Chatham; the coda consists of stacked layers upon layers of detuned and retuned guitars upon each other to create an intricate tapestry of six strings.

Martha Jane & the Talisman: Hello Demon

BEST OF 2016
4
HCTF

Dutch band Martha Jane & the Talisman have taken the darker genres of American music and turned it into a lowdown, dirty, sexy mix. Their debut album Hello Demon blends country with blues and grunge - not necessarily in that order. They relied upon two key elements to pull this off: a loud resonator guitar and a front woman who can let rip as if she is being chased by hellhounds.

Guitarist Maarten van der Grinten can make his instrument wail like a banshee or conjure up the image of insect-infested swamp lands with just a few choice notes. Singer Martha Jane Settler has the husky presence of PJ Harvey and the I-don't give-a fuck attitude of Grace Slick. Earth being invaded by Demons? Something nasty lurking the shadows in Ghost Town? For a moment it sounds perfectly plausible. This is a band that urges you to take seize the opportunity before somebody else does (Grab It and dare to compare a lover with an addictive substance (My Drug My Love).

Baby Scream: Life's a Trap

Argentine musician Juan Pablo Mazzola foregoes his usual full-fledged power pop approach on the new album of his Baby Scream project. Life's a Trap is rather subdued - most of the songs deal with getting older and trying to rekindle the passion in a relationship. Mazzola is good-natured about it though and his sense of humour prevails most of the time. With just his voice and a guitar - and some help from long time collaborator Nick Schinder on organ, piano and backing vocals, he pokes fun at his own uncertainties (Wish You Were Beer) and the twists an turns in the career of struggling singer-songwriter (The Road Bends).

The Ballad Of Music Biz feels a bit out of place - what's a song about a clueless industry that is running around in circles doing amidst a bunch of tunes about the perennial misunderstandings between men and woman? Originally released as a single it could have been the launchpad for an angry EP or album about that subject matter.

Anat Spiegel: South of Somewhere

BEST OF 2016
1
HCTF

Singer and composer Anat Spiegel is blessed with an impressive vocal range. Her resume contains a few mini-operas, poetry with Noon and Ain and a left-field post-rock album as lead singer for Amsterdam based band Controllar. All those elements come together on her solo album South of Somewhere, an exploration of the avant-garde wrapped in a blanket of jazz, rock and pop.

Spiegel lets her voice spill over the bars, pulling off glissandos like there is no tomorrow. All those pyrotechnics aside the multi-layered textures of the music deserve closer attention. The beeps and purrs in Volume Knob are an open invitation to push the limitations of the listener's sound system. No Matter is a study in math noise rock that will haunt budding progressive rockers in their dreams. By contrast the melancholic May My Mirror could have well been mistaken for a long lost Weill and Brecht song. It's just her on vocals and piano, with actor/singer Kevin Walton as her counterpart.

Ian Fisher: Koffer

American alt-country musician Ian Fisher rounded up a bunch of songs that he never got around recording properly for his new album Koffer (suitcase in Dutch and German). He is writing pretty much all of the time - when he is not playing live that is - and he couldn't bear the thought that some of them would be shelved for ever.

Fisher explores various moods. Opener If You Wanna Stay is pushed forward by an upright bass and an organ straight out of Alan Price school. The King gets a well deserved tribute in Candles For Elvis - think Paul Simon meets indie rock. The true surprise is the title track, which is sung in German. Marlene Dietrich recorded Ich hab’ noch einen Koffer in Berlin, the definite song about longing for a place that she can't help revisiting. Fisher is fully aware that he will never be considered as a native German citizen and, when push comes to shove he doesn't want too, That's the core of all his songs - wanting to belong, but never make a commitment except to his art.

David Bowie: new edit of the "Life On Mars" video

Director and photographer Mick Rock did a new edit of the classic David Bowie video for Life On Mars. From The Guardian:

I had an amazing subject and an amazing song – this was the song that had turned me on to David – so what else did I need? David never looked like this at any other time. He never wore that suit again, never had that makeup on again. He never looked more amazing – like a space doll. When his videos got inducted into the Museum of Modern Art in New York, this was the one that everyone stood for – there were no distractions, no dancing girls, just David.

Jet Plane: Pipe Dream

Russian post-rockers Jet Plane take it slow on their new album Pipe Dream, with almost seamless segues between the tracks. Dreamy stuff that unfolds at a leisurely pace, with glorious twin-guitar leads and folk-tinged violin riding on top of the rumbling rhythm section. A few snippets of spoken words add a layer of menace that makes you rethink the meaning of the music.

Like its predessor Loud To Sleep they fall between the cracks of progressive rock, drones and jazz, with some stoner rock licks thrown in for good measure. Jet Plane are like a glacier, unstoppable, at a snail pace, with occasional outbursts of mayhem.

David Bowie: new documentary "The Last Five Years", archival BBC broadcasts in in January

A new David Bowie documentary will air on the BBC in January. David Bowie: The Last Five Years takes an inside look at the creation of his final albums, The Next Day and Blackstar, and the Lazarus musical:

BBC TWO announces a new landmark film, David Bowie: The Last Five Years to air in January 2017, produced and directed by Francis Whately as a follow-up to his acclaimed David Bowie: Five Years which was broadcast on BBC Two in 2013.

As with the first film, this new piece will feature a wealth of rare and unseen archive footage and early audio interviews which have never been released before. This includes the original vocal which Bowie recorded for Lazarus, his last release before his death, which has never been heard before.

Words about music (421): Alex Turner

That rock and roll, eh? That rock and roll, it just won't go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swap. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules. But it's always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock and roll, it seems like it's faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there's nothing you can do about it.

Piuma: Born

Shortly after he released his self-titled debut EP, alternative rocker and multi-instrumentalist David Small enlisted three musicians to play the Piuma songs live in Studio City, CA @ Kulak's Woodshed. After three rehearsals, they went in at the deep end. The proceedings on stage could be watched via HD webcast. Most of the show is now released as a digital LP, Born.

Lamar Little (drums), Max Butler (keys), and Mike Roberts (bass) rose to the challenge and found a few spots for improvised sections that will appeal to the jam band fans, with the extended As Far As the Eye Can See (watch it on the Relix website) as the prime example. Beyond the Bubble now sounds cheerful and the previously unreleased Nymph has the potential to turn into a major funk monster. The on-the-spot improvisation and letting go of the studio versions give the tracks room to breathe. Born sound more alive (no pun intended) than the studio EP.

Phantom Pop: BETA

Fusion has a bad reputation as being overly polished mainstream pseudo-jazz, or even worse, background music for immensely boring cocktail parties or third tier Seventies movies and sitcoms. It would be shame, however, to write off the whole genre as a failure. New York Phantom Pop knows how to insert a bit of spice and bravado on their new album BETA. Built upon rhythm section that can turn on a dime without missing a beat they are pushing the boundaries without giving in to musician's geekery to might put off their audiences.

They dazzle and purr, stretch, chill out and jump, often within the confines of a single track. Go for the adventurous Hometown for six minutes of bliss or sit back and let Selfie Punch cuddle up next to you. This is what fusion was supposed to sound like before it became fashionable and over-polished. BETA is sexy and sometimes even dangerous. Thanks, Phantom Pop, for giving the kiss of life to a dead niche.
