Indie rock band Daddy Lion took the best elements of Nineties college rock, added power pop and a bit of psychedelica, and ended up with an album that hits hard, with some softer spots as well. Learn to Have Nothing and You Will Have Everything was recorded in the attic of a lake house that belonged to synth player Chris Johnson's grandparents. The place might be in need of some serious repairs, but the acoustics were fine.
Originally a one-man band by lead singer and guitarist Jeremy Joseph it is now full-fledged outfit who can project a big sound (Mother Sun). spin a scary yet commercial power ballad (Werewolf) and tap into adolescent self-loathing (Maslow). The Columbia, SC quartet have done some serious soul-searching and the references to bands like REM and Sugar are quite obvious Learn to Have Nothing and You Will Have Everything is an album that can hold its own, and that is good news for anyone who likes a guitar band that offers solace and anger. They went through Hell, but found their way back.
