Blackberry Smoke have been churning out old school southern rock songs with a country twist for nearly two decades. They are live band first and have long lost count about how many shows they have played over the years. Their sixth studio album Find A Light has all the trappings of an actual live performance. There is a laidback urgency permeating throughout the songs, urging the listener to play close attention to the twin guitars playing catch (both acoustic and electric), the swinging bass, spot-on drums, snazzy keyboards and the rugged vocals. Also: take note of the lyrics, dealing mostly about hope in dark times.
Some of the vibrant leftfield indie scene in their hometown Atlanta, GA hometown scene has found its way in to the arrangements, but Blackberry Smoke stick close to what they do best: meat-and-potatoes blues driven music. Each time when frontman Charlie Starr has written enough fresh tunes (he collaborated with Keith Nelson on a couple of songs - that's a first in the band's history) to make another album he invites his bandmates to chip in for yet another foray into a good ol' country rock. With guest spots for like-minded artists - Robert Randolph, Amanda Shires, and The Wood Brothers - Find A Light will appeal to fans of The Allman Brothers Band and the Stones during their early Seventies heyday.
