At first the new Dawes album Passwords comes off as yet another example of laidback early Seventies West Coast radio friendly pop. But there is a lot of trouble in paradise and upon closer inspection the lyrics make it a quite unsettling, uneasy listening experience. The band's songwriter Taylor Goldsmith has to deal with a lot personal issues, a list long enough to recommend professional help. Bouts of paranoia, self-loathing and of course relationships that end in tears are dealt with through scathing lyrics, casting shadows on the Summer vibe of the music.
Passwords is about being locked out and trying desperately trying to get in again. The contrast between the music and the words only enhances the intensity, making the album a heavy hitter wearing velvet gloves.
Dawes:
Taylor Goldsmith: guitar, vocals
Griffin Goldsmith: drums
Wylie Gelber: bass
Lee Pardini: keyboards
Passwords is released thru Hub Records (vinyl, CD, digital).
