The Whispering Tree: Invisible Forces

Folk music is by default serious genre. Political and satirical, but if executed properly, steering clear of being heavy-handed or pontificating. Franco-American duo The Whispering Tree have found the right mix on their new album Invisible Forces. Whether they sing about depression (Heavy), take aim at a mogul living in a high rise (Fat Cat) or dream of moving West (California) singer/songwriter Eleanor Kleiner and multi-instrumentalist Elie Brangbour always find the best melody and instrumentation to bring the song to life.

They have picked a great band name for their music. It's powerful, deep-rooted and sways gently. Don't surprised when their catchy protest song Bells makes the playlist of many gay marriage ceremonies.

Marty Balin: 1942-2018

Marty Balin, co-founder of the pioneering psychedelic rock band Jefferson Airplane, is dead at 76. The band was at the forefront of the counter-culture movement, with their political stance made clear on their Crown of Creation and Volunteers. He left the Airplane in 1971 and later joined the commercially successful off-shoot Jefferson Starship. That band would sell tons of records but lacked the musical inventiveness.

Cocoa Futures: Big Time

photo: Sara Amroussi-Gilissen

UK electro-pop outfit Cocoa Futures have some serious doubts about making it on their new single Big Tome. Singer Greg Sanderson seems to long for fame, but he knows far too well that there's a downside to it. When push come to shove this serious piece of accessible soul searching doesn't provide a definite answer. Which makes perfect sense, because there isn't one.

Big Time is released thru Lost In The Manor Records.

Lexytron: Blackmail

Lexytron is a Manchester based singer with a soft spot for Sixties psychedelic pop. Her single Blackmail is a tongue-in-cheek love written from the perspective of the Devil, a character known to have excellent taste in music. Plenty of innuendo on this carefully orchestrated song - her training as a classical violinist and pianist came in handy - and a powerful statement about sexual independence. Michael Grice (City Reign) got her back playing guitar.

Calva Louise: I Heard A Cry

London fuzzy garage trio Calva Louise are quick to release a follow-up for their >Outrageous single. I Heard A Cry is a fast-paced, frantic punk rocker pushed forward by Jess Allanic's don't-fuck-with-me vocals.

I Heard A Cry is a self-released single. Buy it from the usual digital outlets

Dead Naked Hippies: "Rare" video

Leeds post-punk trio Dead Naked Hippies have made a video for their latest single Rare. "They took a long hard look at heir bodies and decided they look fine, no matter what other people might think - never mind the beauty products peddled by companies that promising the buyer instead gratification, wealth, fine weather, and quite of bit of sex."

The Joy Formidable: AAARTH

Welsh gnarly art-pop trio >The Joy Formidable have carved their own nice since 2007. Their latest album is called AAARTH, a pun on the Welsh word for bear. It's an apt title for a bunch of songs that are both cuddly and unpredictable. The band likes to build towering tunes, only to soften them a bit with dabs of vocals and chopped riffs.

When they lean towards a bit of mainstream pop, they tend to turn things upside down to ensure that things don't get to comfortable. if they were a couch, the springs would be showing through upholstery.

Film makers Adele Schmidt and José Zegarra Holder have launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com to cover the costs of putting the finishing touches on their Romantic Warriors IV – Krautrock (Part 1) documentary. They have set a $20,000 flexible goal:

Developed in Germany in the late 60s and early 70s, and largely divorced from the traditional rock influences of British and American bands, the so-called Krautrock genre contributed to the evolution of electronic music, techno and hip hop, ambient music, minimalism and avant-garde.

Jeditah: Waves

Dutch singer Jeditah covers the middle ground between electronic and dream pop on her debut EP Waves, switching between harsh digital and warm analogue sounds to create tension and release. There is a bit of Björk in there, but it lacks her tiresome self-consciousness.

Jeditah opts for the quirky humour of Fay Lovsky and the evasiveness of Kate Bush, with the daring catch-me-if-you-can protagonist in Horseman as the prime example. Lead single You & Me pokes fun about inner insecurities. She is a musical shapeshifter, following her own path.

Keith Stone With Red Gravy: Blues With A Taste Of New Orleans

Keith Stone With Red Gravy throw down a set of handsome swamp blues with a funk twist on their new album Blues With A Taste Of New Orleans. It all sounds instantly familiar, but listen more closely and smart mashups reveal themselves. Ever wondered what Tom Petty would have sounded like when he was guest player with Creedence Clearwater revival? Pretty much like this quartet does during You Ain’t Got Nothing.

New Orleans is the city of the cross-over, the proverbial genres melting pot. It shows in the music and the food that is being made in the Big Easy. Listeners who don't feel hungry after hearing Red Gravy should consult a doctor asap.

Words about music (474): Wayne Kramer

Aesthetically, we were enormously successful. Economically... there was no success. It was all about music of the future and unfortunately it was a band that didn't have any future.

I am Oak: Golden Pavilion

I am Oak and Kim Janssen, two leading Dutch indie folk acts, join forces for a short trip to Tokyo in Japan in September. To mark the occasion I am Oak wrote the new single Golden Pavilion. It is a song about searching. Spoiler: happy ending. He also made an animated video.

Golden Pavilion is released on Snowstar Records.

Neil Young: Broken Arrow Magazine Archive is now online

The authoritative Neil Young fan magazine Broken Arrow Magazine, published by the Neil Young Appreciation Society folded in 2014. It had been superseded as a primary information source by sites such as Neil Young News and Sugar Mountain (setlists). It turns out that the people behind the magazine have working hard to build a fully searchable online archive of all issues:

Hi, This is Scott Sandie, your old editor from Broken Arrow. This email is going out to all the old NYAS members who are still in my contact list.

For the past year or so there has been a working party preparing all 134 issues of Broken Arrow magazine for free online release. That project has reached the end of its main stage, and some 8000 magazine pages are now ready for viewing and search. Tom Hambleton has very kindly agreed to host these pages over on Sugar Mountain and has done a really great job in laying it all out in his inimitable fashion.

Black Honey: Black Honey

photo: Harriet Brown

English indie pop band Black Honey manage to sound slick and tough on their self-titled album. Lead singer Izzy B. Phillips sounds a bit like Wendy James (Transvision Vamp), but with the sense of humour of Mette Lindberg (The Asteroids Galaxy Tour) as an added bonus,.

Lyrically it is an education for mainstream pop fans, and production wise a guilty pleasure for the more advanced music fan. If disco-infused pop ever makes a comeback as a serious genre, the Brighton based quartet's self-titled debut album can be pinpointed as a landmark release.

Words about music (473): Chuck Berry

I wanted to play blues. But I wasn't blue enough. I wasn't like Muddy Waters, people who really had it hard. In our house, we had food on the table. We were doing well compared to many. So I concentrated on this fun and frolic, these novelties.

Churn Milk Joan: "Der Traum eines Kindes" movie

English-American duo avant-garde duo Churn Milk Joan have made a movie for Der Traum eines Kindes. The film is 37 minutes long but is being released in 16 episodes (one for each track on the album). Colourful music set to black and white imagery. The first epsiode on now up YouTube:

“Der Traum eines Kindes” is a film by Richard Knutson and Colin Robinson (collectively Churn Milk Joan). It is partially animation and partially live action – and wholly rather odd. Imagine Oliver Postgate getting together with Jan Švankmajer. Richard and Colin did all the filming, the animation, the acting, the editing and the music.

PLNT9: Who Knows

LA based trio PLNT9 channel Queen of the Stone Age on their new single Who Knows. Even faster than their previous one Let Loose it could have turned into a train wreck, but while they keep a firm grip on the proceedings, with producer Fox Fagan and Brian Lucey (mastering) helping them out to get a crunchy, grunge rock feel that spells energy in all-caps.

Town of Saints: Weeds

Dutch/Finnish folk band Town of Saints have released Weeds, the third single from their forthcoming new album, Celebrate. They never came as close to country on this one, when they about the inner demons than can haunt them. The video was shot in the Finnish birthplace of violinist Heta Salkolahti.

The Special Pillow: Sleeping Weird

The Special Pillow play psych-pop music with inroads into roots rock, drones, noise, and West Coast harmonizing. With a resume like that the underground is the place where they will find an audience and they have done so since they were founded in Hoboken, NJ, 20 odd years ago. Their latest album Sleeping Weird finds them exploring their favourite genres, mixing them up, pulling it apart and reassembling it again to create concise songs. They love to jam, but always keep it short.

There is a looseness and free-flowing spirit in the music. Lyrically they take cues from The Kinks and They Might Be Giants. They can be sardonic (All My Exes Live in Vortexes), harsh (Flaming Skull) and in awe of things (A Billion Years Ago). The title track is a mash-up of The Jim Carroll Band and Fairport Convention: energetic garage rock and violin driven folk within the same song. With their sixth album chock full of eclectic goodness they confirm their status as an essential underground band.

Sabatta: tour dates

London rockers Sabatta will be on the road to promote their new album Misfit Music. "Singer and guitarist Yinka Oyewole is one of those rare musicians who conjure up different moods and tempos at the same time, playing catch with his vocals and instrument. Being and outsider by way of rock is almost a lost art nowadays, but Misfit Music is a call to arms for rawkers of all ages. It's melodic, in-your-face, and filled to the rafters with riffs and hooks. Sabatta makes being angry fun again."

Johnny Kills: Seems

photo: Christine Lloyd-Fitt

UK rock trio Johnny Kills get busy with fuzz again on their new single Seems, a falsetto driven garage rocker with a rumbling back beat. These guys can sound certain and totally at ease when they sing about doubt. Not giving a fuck is an essential ingredient for rocking out and they passed the test with flying colours.

Annelie: After Midnight

photo: Mcklin Photography

Dutch pianist Annelie de Vries has been making a living as a highly regarded musician for hire in the pop and dance scene. Her debut album After Midnight has nothing to do with mainstream popular music at all. It's an all instrumental neo-classical record, just her and a piano. She had some sketches lying around and she turned those into full-fledged, subdued excursions, making it a seamless listening exercise.

If there is recurring theme on After Midnight, it's the search for peace and quiet in an increasingly loud and busy world. Annelie has made an album on which note counts, pulling in the listeners with her gentle touch and exquisite timing.

Pale Waves: My Mind Makes Noises

When in need of a dose of breezy emo indie rock, English quartet Pale Waves is just what the doctor ordered. Their new album My Mind Makes Noises has the required sad but cheerful songs about heartbreak, sex, and other relationship issues. Taking cues for the New Romantics and bubblegum pop they will be appeal to youngsters making their way into music. Pretty easy to digest and well-crafted this album can be the first step to get out of the dead end of modern day r&B, but also rather faceless.

Teen rags will describe them as edgy, but they couldn't be more wrong. They are blatantly commercial and need to break free from the safe format when they want to make a more lasting impression. And slap that damn engineer on his fingers when he is messing with the vocals. The only effect he achieves through his meddling is to make it sound instantly dated.

The League of Assholes: RAW MEAT DIET

The League of Assholes will keep releasing freaky sound collages as long as 45 resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The third in the series is called RAW MEAT DIET and it is a harsh/pastoral/electronic/avant-garde/noise/freejazz extravaganza with some animal noises thrown it to make it even more harrowing. Marcelo Radulovich acted once more as the collector and collator of the project, turning to his LA scene to help him our and inviting everyone who had something to contribute to another musical blast aimed at the Trump administration.

While most listeners won't be able to handle all 30 minutes and 17 seconds in one sitting it is best enjoyed in full (and preferably loud) to fully appreciate the dynamics and smart tension and release created by Radulovich when he stitched the pieces together. It is a towering musical canvas that can flap wildly or flutter surprisingly gently within the space of a couple of bars.

The Chairman Dances: Child of My Sorrow

Philly indie rockers The Chairman Dances had been flying under the radar for a couple of years until their Time Without Measure album was picked up by a handful of long standing music sites and magazines in 2016. They toured extensively as a result, landed a few high profile support slots and racked up tons of spins on college radio. Between that busy schedule and his day job band leader Eric Krewson found the time to write a fresh stacks of songs that would end up on their new album Child of My Sorrow.

Sadness and weirdness (and sometimes both) percolate through the music and lyrics. This is the kind of left-field melodic, yet complex music that record store clerks like to ram down their clientele's throat. With Child of My Sorrow there is no need for that. Just drop it in the player and the pastoral, psychedelic sounds, topped off with brass, woodwinds and piano, will do the rest.

Words about music (472): Little Richard

I think my legacy should be that when I started in show business, there wasn't no such thing as rock n' roll. When I started with 'Tutti Frutti,' that's when rock really started rocking.

Jeremy Nail: Live Oak

Austin based singer-songwriter Jeremy Nail got handed a bad set 0f cards when sarcoma cost him left leg. He documented the ordeal on his 2016 album My Mountain. With his new one Live Oak he has turned the page, setting his sights on the future. Like the strong and steady growing tree after which the record is named, Nail is branching out again.

He retained the melancholic country rock vibe, but his lyrics have taken on a more deviant tone. The fear is still there, but hope had the upper hand on this collection of soft-spoken, powerful songs.

Sascha Osborn: An Unseen Star

English folk singer Sascha Osborn goes jazzy on her new single An Unseen Star, backed be gentle pushing keyboards lifted from the early Seventies, tinkling guitar, and a lazy back beat. It's a change of pace for her, but it turns out that she can be a laidback torch singer as well.

Todd Rundgren: rig rundown

Watch Todd Tundgeren discussing his guitars for a rig rundowwn for Premier Guitar. His band mates Jesse Gress (guitar) and Kasim Sulton (bass) weigh in as well.

For this tour, Todd Rundgren left behind the big stage show and truckloads of gear and opted for a string of streamlined, intimate performances spanning his entire career. To make the show happen, he toured with just two guitars—his longtime No. 1 is this MIJ ’80s Fernandes P-Project “super strat.” As he tells in the video, the industry was much different in the late 1980s. He toured Japan just before the ’90s started, and he was gifted with a pile of Fernandes guitars. He took some of them back to the States and sat on them for years. He eventually got curious and started a tone shootout between all the freebies. This seafoam green model emerged victorious and was bestowed the obvious name, “Foamy.” He never really used tone knob or switches, so he had those disconnected and now it has a single volume control and a 5-way toggle. He uses D’Addario NYXL .010–.046 strings and always tunes to E.
