Dick Dale, the undisputed King of the Surf Guitar, died of heart failure yesterday aged 81. He is best known for his signature hit Miserlou, a storming guitar rave-up that got another lease on life when it was used by director Quentin Tarantino as the intro music for his Pulp Fiction movie. Dale's rapid alternate picking technique has been copied many times, but no one got it exactly right. Crippling medical bills - he was treated for cancer - prolonged his career as a stage performer until 2016.
