It has been a textbook shortcut for bands trying make it: sell their soul to the devil and get a great album in return. London based voodoo blues band Jo Carley and The Old Dry Skulls take that old myth apart on Voodoo Bones & Vaudeville Blues, twelve songs about gullible people duped by sketchy characters and horror stories about pitchfork wielding creatures and the undead.
Tongue firmly-in-cheek they provide a full set of old school entertainment, a sideshow where vaudeville, blues and skiffle conspire to get their audiences to dance their asses of. Singer Jo Carley is a powerhouse who can holler and whisper, with multi-instrumentalist Tim Carley and bass player James Le Huray pushing her to give it her all. Bigots will wave their fingers at this kind of music, but anyone with a mind of their own can't help but love this.
Jo Carley and The Old Dry Skulls:
Jo Carley: vocals, fiddle, washboard
Tim Carley: guitar, foot tambourine, kick-drum, hi-hat, percussion
James Le Huray: double bass, banjo
