NYC rock trio Tuff Sunshine is now down to being a one-man project by Johnny Leitera. Being on his own hasn't slowed him down that much and he set about recording the songs for his album Yesterday Suit in a former textile plant, his current place of residence. He pokes fun at himself for being an artist who never made it big with songs like My Back Catalogue and My Greatest Hits. Keeping himself busy fixing and rebuilding his home/studio kept him grounded as well and were the inspiration for The Scaffolding and I Got My Hardhat On.
Cutting through the bullshit becomes easier as one gets older and nostalgia is a means to preserve the best bits of the past. He has to answer to no one but himself. Leitera ia a man who tackles one problem at the time and it shows in his music. With a relaxed sense of humour and a good ear for melody that makes his songs timeless (and therefore unfashionable). DIY melodic post-punk that refuses to be rushed, with the meandering title track Yesterday Suit demanding the listeners undivided attention for 7 minutes straight.

Denver Balkan folk inspired band DeVotchKa will play two nights (October 19-20) @ The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. The Halloween Masquerade Ball will feature aerialists, stilt-walkers, circus folks, pop up performances, a bloody mary bar, and late night DJ sets by Shawn King.
Brooklyn based funksters Turkuaz will say farewell to 2021 with two shows @ Infinity Hall in Hartford, CT on December 30 & 31. No special guests so far, but a few surprises are highly likely.
Another episode has been added to the Phish Live Bait series. Vol. 17 once again focuses on the big jams, with Runaway Jim (7/3/00 E Centre - Camden, NJ) and the pairing of Tweezer > Makisupa Policeman (9/28/99 Oak Mountain Amphitheatre - Pelham, AL) as the tracks that fans of the Vermont quartet will go to first.
Tracks:Live Bait Vol. 17 is a free download compiled by the band's archivist Kevin Shapiro.
Chicago based singer and guitarist Mark Vickery takes a sharp left on You Never Know What's Coming to You, the third single by his Cosmic Bull project. Using the bottom end of his voice on top of a funky backbeat and a mix of NOLA jazz and Motown funk, he brings a good-natured sense of foreboding to the track. It is not clear of it is good news or bad, but it is a party tune either way. Drummer Gerald Dowd (drums), Alan Berliant (bass) Newtron Cole (percussion), Josh Bell (saxophone) and Rikky McRae and Kari Nelson (backup vocals) must have a whale of a time recording it, with producer Scott Tallarida keeping it all together.
HCTF review of Unkindness of Ravens.
French-Italian duo Ideini have changed things up a bit on their latest single, Sera in Italia. It is all acoustic, with singer Francesca Martino vocalizing on top of the guitar, with the sound of crickets in the background. It is the perfect soundtrack for a late night drink, staring at the stars in the sky.
All 22 Phish Summer & tour shows are offered as pay-per-view webcasts n HD or 4k. A Webcast Season Pass, MP3 and T-Shirt bundles are available.
Chicago based rock quartet Kerosene Stars are into no-frills power pop tinged music, with the vocals smack in the middle of the mix. Their new single Don't Pass Me By has a nifty instrumental middle section, that deserves a thumbs up from anyone who loves guitar and pummeling drums. It is the B-side of their new single Where Have You Been?, which will be released via Big Stir Records as part of their weekly Digital Singles Series.
Remember live shows? They are coming back. Singer George Bisharat, better known as Big Harp George, brings his chromatic harmonica and ace musicians to Sausalito for a night of good time blues:
I couldn’t be more excited to say that I’ll be back in concert with my band at the Sausalito Jazz and Blues By the Bay festival on Friday, August 6th, from 6:30-8:00 pm in Gabrielson Park. Admission is free and open to all.
It is his first change to perform his latest single It's Tuesday for a live audience.
Dutch musician Stefan Breuer will release his new concept album True Sound by his lo-fi project The World of Dust on September 10. All songs are about the life and death of his grandparents. On lead single Goodbye he copes with the death of is grandfather Jan, who succumbed to cancer in 1999. Todd Tobias wrote the music, and his wife Anneke Nieuwdorp took care of the backing vocals. Jangling psychedelic shoegaze that goes straight for the gut.
Nick Cave and Warren Ellis will be on tour in the UK in September and October, promoting their new album Carnage. Tickets go on sale Friday 23 July at 10am BST at nickcave.com.
Live dates:Singer and activist Billy Bragg will release his tenth studio album, The Million Things That Never Happened, on October 8th via Cooking Vinyl. He has made a video for the lead single, I Will Be Your Shield, a melancholic piano ballad. Bragg explains: "To me, 'I Will Be Your Shield' is the heart and soul of the album. I’ve come to the conclusion that empathy is the currency of music – that our job as songwriters is to help people come to terms with their feelings by offering them examples of how others may have dealt with a situation similar to that in which the listener finds themselves. After what we’ve all been through, the idea of being a shield - physically, emotionally, psychologically - resonates beyond the pandemic".
A special online concert will be broadcasted on September 9th. He will be joined on stage by the musicians who play on the new album: Romeo Stodart (guitar), Michele Stodart (bass), Darren Beckett (drums), Nick Pynn (lap steel guitar, violin) and Jack Valero (guitar). The proceeds will be donated to the Music Venue Trust, an organisation that set up to save grass roots venues in the UK.
A live concert to me is exciting because of all the electricity that is generated in the crowd and on stage. It's my favorite part of the business, live concerts.

Record Store Day was turned into a 2-day event this year, with select titles being released on each day. Today, July 17th is the second one, so get off your couch and buy some stuff from your local independent record store. Have a chat with fellow music lovers and agree to disagree about taste, sell-outs, rarities, remasters and such. Bitch about the majors reissuing records that you can easily find in thrift stores and clueless hipsters buying piss-poor turntables to play them on. O, and picture discs sound awful.
Patti Smith has announced a massive tour that will keep her busy for almost a year, playing shows in the States, Europe, and Australia and New Zealand.
Live dates:Declan Welsh & The Decadent West have unveiled a video for their latest single Parisian Friends: "a rollicking garage rocker, taking the piss about feeling insecure around people who appear to be cooler or at least more sophisticated. The Scottish quartet proudly proclaim that said friends might even be imaginerary, saving them the trouble of drinking wine instead of beer as an added bonus. With their ample supply of great hooks and "don't-give-a-fuck" attitude they shouldn't worry about being stylish, or hip and happening".
Nick Leet, singer and guitarist of Minneapolis based power pop band High on Stress, had a nice chat with Phil Solem (Great Buildings and the Rembrandts) for his Figure Eights podcast. And yes, the elephant in the room - the "Friends" theme, I'll Be There For You is addressed.
Stephen Chopek has made a video for Empty Hands, a single from his upcoming Dweller EP, out on July 22nd via Declared Goods: "[It is] an amalgam of power pop and synth-driven New Wave. The upbeat backing track and chopped guitar notes are an indication that a partner can enter his life soon, provided he is at the right spot on the right time, filling the void, but until that happens, he has to be patient and endure being alone for a little while longer".
Singer-songwriter Spottiswoode has a gig in Frederiksberg @ Metronomen on November 8. He will be sharing the stage with Matti Muller, Jonny Gee, Joe Bickerstaff and Neil Moonsauce. He has announced that he will play "two cathartic and uplifting sets".

George Bisharat, in his blues guise as singer and chromatic harmonica player Big Harp George, has posted a video for his latest single, It's Tuesday. He and his fellow musicians dressed for the occasion, having a socially distanced party.
It is hard to keep track of time when all the days are pretty much the same, but Tuesdays stand out: "[the song was] named after the day of the week when the garbage men come around to pick up the trash. Decidedly upbeat and utterly danceable he and his fellow musicians serve up a dish of red hot blues. And while music isn't a cure, it sure can provide a very welcome distraction in these weird and scary times". The clip was directed by Darren Patton Sr..
It's Tuesday is a self-released single, available as a free download from his website.
HCTF review of It's Tuesday.
Synth post-punk trio Autogramm are dancing on a volcano on their new album No Rules, a collection of upbeat Dystopian floorfillers. Feeling good about feeling down is hard thing to do, but they pull it off with old school keyboards, vintage vocal effects and drum machines. They can play it really fast when they want to (Bad Day and Too Loud). Naming all their influences will require quite some digging and head-scratching - is that a Hall and Oates bit? There are easy ones as well. The Kim Deal-alike bass part as the foundation Fuck Fast Fashion is a nice touch.
Sure, they have many a concern about the current state of affairs - it shows rather prominently in the lyrics of Anxiety and I am a Situation, but they are dead set to find a silver lining. What's not to like about as song like Jody is a Cop, a chance meeting between the Ramones meet Devo that really rips. They are a band that think outside the box, cooking up a heady mix of genres with reckless abandon.
No Rules is released via Nevado Records (vinyl, digital).
Tracks:Guitar virtuoso Kaki King hopes to play in Europe in the Fall to promote her latest album Modern Yesterdays. Quite a few from these dates were supposed to happen in the Spring of 2020.
Live dates:Dutch electronic pop duo Pocket Knife Army have posted a video for Over And Done, the last song of "one new song each month" challenge. They got the keys to P60, a concert venue in Amstelveen, and made good use of it, The clip was shot Jesse Immanuel Bom and used Okke van Breemen's bracelet gesture controllers to add effects in real time.

HCTF review of Over And Done.
Irish musician Brian Kelly recorded the songs for Bisignis, his new album by his one-man project So Cow in a shed in Glennafosha. By doing so he could be as loud as he wanted, filling track after track with different instruments. He wears the lo-fi tag with pride, taking cues from punk a la the Buzzcocks, Pixies-inspired surf noise and the catchy melodies of the Undertones and Billy Bragg.
Kelly's no-frills approach is endearing, with self-deprecating songs like Leave Group and Now That I Am 38. He is fully aware that he will never fit in, but he is quite content about that. As long as he can pick up an instrument and create something fresh out of thin air there is no reason to change at all. With a bit of luck he will make some money that can be turned into Drink Tokens. No one is telling him what to do, which gave him the chance to keep Not Quite Nostalgia going for nine minutes straight after he stumbled upon a groove that he particularly liked.
English psych-pop quartet Spygenius have made a stylish B&W video for Windy, a track from their latest release, the sprawling Man On The Sea: "[This album] might be their magnum opus, but as long as the band's songwriter Peter Watts huge stack of songs is as big as it now, the band can keep going for many more years. Old school quality never goes out of style."
HCTF review of Man On The Sea.
Producers are curators of an artists best work. They save the best, throw away the rest. Then, when the artist hears the finished product, his self-esteem is boosted and perhaps he can go back in and do a take like the one the producer just made for him. But if you play them the whole take with them sounding so terrible, it destroys them because they hear how awful they are. I'm not talking about every artist just self - destructive ones. Elvis' later works were put together the same way. Some of Linda Ronstadt's stuff was even done that way, and she's not self-destructive as far as I know.

Welsh quintet The Rotanas have taken the Britpop format to the wringer and added a shitload of fuzz and reverb for their new single Get The Call. Singer Harry Watton manages to sound aloof and anxious simultaneously, struggling a bit to rise above the wall of sound constructed by the guitarists Aaron Tormey and James Wilson. The nineties are very much alive in Cardiff, even down to dressing the part. Recommended if you like Oasis before they got pretentious.
After the sprawling concept album Manbird, it is back to basics - well, sort of - for Anton Barbeau. The underground psych-pop maestro offers a collection of songs about life, love, death and beer on his new one, Oh The Joys We Live For. He is in fine form - some artist are just not capable of making a shit album - with his sharp eye and ear to find inspiration, and it doesn't matter if it is mundane or highbrow. The tender I Love It When She Does The Dishes, with lovely backing vocals by Julia VBH and Sharron Kraus, sits comfortably to the barely contained anger of It's Alright Rosie - apparently Barbeau can run out of patience after all - and the horror of Three Days The Death Enigma. His knack for surrealistic lyrics is allowed to roam free in Salt Lick (spoiler: it has to do with tears, minerals, and there is a bucket involved).
The title track Oh The Joys We Live For is a plea to count your blessings and the joyous When Life Brings You Beer is a dead ringer for summer playlists. Just to show that he can write outside the pop formula, Barbeau included the cinematic instrumental Filmik. He puts the polyphonic analog synthesizers Prophet-6 and Prophet-5 to good use in Die Smiling, a track that fans of Steven Wilson will like. He has been releasing solo albums since 1993, catering to an appreciative fan base who can't believe their luck that their hero is so prolific - 33 albums and counting.
Stephen Chopek is looking for love on his new single Empty Hands, an amalgam of power pop and synth-driven New Wave. The upbeat backing track and chopped guitar notes are an indication that a partner can enter his life soon, provided he is at the right spot on the right time, filling the void, but until that happens, he has to be patient and endure being alone for a little while longer. On the upside: he is an avid multi-instrumentalist, so he can keep himself busy, creating his music on his own conditions.
Dutch electronic pop duo Pocket Knife Army have released Over And Done, the last song of "one new song each month" challenge. The pandemic got in the way, messing up the schedule, and the project grounded to a halt. Desirée Coumans and Erwin Tuijl felt the weren't done yet and with this melancholic track they put their self-imposed limititations to bed. The eighties continue to be a huge inspiration on this eighties-inspired song, with the sytnhs and beats having a good-natured tug of war.
Scott Lipps of Spin Magazine talks with Vernon Reid and Corey Glover about the history of Living Colour in an epsisode of the Lipps Service podcast series. They look back on their breakthrough song Cult of Personality and meeting Mick Jagger when they were the support act for the Rolling Stones in 1989.
Flemish musicians Pieter Theelen (synth, vocals) and Sander Boury (drums, percussion, synths) have joined forces for a new synth-pop duo, Thebou. Their debut single A Life Where He Can Be is a dark song about an unnamed protagonist who is trying to get out of a mess, but it turns out that the tunnel he ran in is a dead end. Guest vocalist Stephanie Declerck (The Grassroots Movement) adds a bit of colour to this study of gray scales that could mistaken for a long lost eighties dance floor filler.
German progressive guitarist Yuval Ron has posted the full Live Against The Virus show. Recorded @ Berliner Rockhaus Saal on May 28th, 2021 with Niklas Lukassen (bass) and Simon Schröder (drums) he played tracks from his latest album Somewhere in This Universe, Somebody Hits a Drum. They dressed for the occasion, donning NASA astronauts inspired clothing. Luckily that did not get in the way of their inspired performance. Thye offer an hour of classic Seventies prog fusion with a healthy dose of metal that is uplifting (no pun intended). The brand new Covid Gets To Mars has all the trappings of scary Sci-Fi soundtrack.
Tracks:Live Against The Virus can be watched via Ron's Muso Mind profile.

Greek singer, songwriter and producer LOGOUT has made a video for Κώστας ("Costas"), a track from his latest album ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ: "Mixing traditional Greek folk melodies and modern day electronics he brings traditional music to the 21st Century. With the aid of like-minded artists Nalyssa Green (vocals), Kalliopi Mitropoulou (violin) and Orestis Petrakis (synthesizers) the album provides a gateway to the Greek underground scene".
HCTF review of ΕΔΩ/ΕΚΕΙ.
Houston, TX lo-fi band Low Horizon are down to a trio nowadays, but it is business as usual on their new EP, Two Days. Songwriter and guitarist John Gottlieb is still writing short songs about the chaos and turmoil in his everyday life, whether it is feeling out of sync after a long flight in Two Days (maybe), coming awfully close to throwing in the towel after reassessing friendships in Okay, Same or what is the use of being a composer of songs for a limited audience in Chorus.
Making a racket can be therapeutic exercise. If anything, the music helps him to get it out of his system. With fellow band members Brandon T. Cane and Jasmine Fuller egging him on Low Horizon can continue to reach an audience that can relate to the problems. Or just crank it to feel even better themselves if they are doing fine.
English post-punk quartet Hadda Be have unveiled a video for Nurse's Song, to coincide with 73rd Birthday to the National Health Service. It is a track from their debut album Another Life: "Singer Amber Rose Price stands her ground, rising above the melodic din provided by her band members, with bass player Ben Richards channeling The Cure. Another Life could have been recorded in the darkest hours of the Thatcher-era. The stifling atmosphere the lockdown is almost palpable, but there is also plenty of room to discuss relationships hitting rock bottom. Hadda Be are in sync with both the past as the current state of things. That's no reason to be cheerful, but as a reality check it covers all the bases". The clip was made by Luthiem Escalona.
HCTF review of Another Life.
Welsh guitarist Richard Thomas has reached the bottom of his stack of unreleased tracks, but that is not a problem because he has written plenty of new ones as well to compile You Want Jam On It?, the third full-length album by his one-man project Mint Biscuit. He goes back to the basics with three blues-drenched rockers (Roadcruisin', Bluesy and Ribena Breakfast, before making a sharp right into folk (Acidic) and funky psychedelic rock (Apricot Jam).
Thomas likes to go with the flow, surprising himself with motifs and chord progressions that come out of nowhere but always fit the mood. It requires a lot of courage to go out with just a bunch of guitars - lucky for him he owns a quite a few. He allows himself to go Slowly Drifting or limit himself just a few notes for Warm Sounds. He sounds like he is sitting right in front of the listener, a little anxious perhaps, but he shouldn't worry. This collection of instrumentals doesn't need words, although his dad speaks up right at the end of Jamming In The Key Of Raspberry, saying: "yes, that was good, you just need some catchy lyrics now".
Brooklyn based funksters Turkuaz have teamed up with Talking Heads founder member Jerry Harrison and guitarist Adrian Belew for a short tour to perform Remain in Light plus a couple of other Heads' songs. The debut performance was at the Peach Music Festival in Scranton, PA, on July 3. The show was taped by Jeff Travitz and can be downloaded from the Live Music Archive.
English old school blues trio Jo Carley and The Old Dry Skulls finally have the change to promote their latest album Voodoo Bones & Vaudeville Blues with a string of live shows in the UK: : "Tongue firmly-in-cheek they provide a full set of old school entertainment, a sideshow where vaudeville, blues and skiffle conspire to get their audiences to dance their asses of. Singer Jo Carley is a powerhouse who can holler and whisper, with multi-instrumentalist Tim Carley and bass player James Le Huray pushing her to give it her all. Bigots will wave their fingers at this kind of music, but anyone with a mind of their own can't help but love this".
Anton Barbeau has made a video for Across The Drama Pond, a track from his Manbird album: "a sprawling 2CD concept album about finding out what "home" means. He looks back to his days in Sacramento, the city in California where he was born, his stays in Spain and the UK, and the farm in Germany that is his current place of residence".
HCTF review of Manbird.
I can't read music. That's not where I come from musically. I come strictly from feeling, and that feeling comes from rock & roll.
Bobby Keys
Brighton based sextet Opus Kink channel Madness on their new single This Train. Once again saxophone and trumpet are playing up a storm on this fast-paced song, with a mellow jazzy coda to give the dancers a change to catch their breath. A dirty, funky anthem about the need to keep a clear head and not get caught up in the next hype - "don't loose yourself to anyone else".
This Train is released via Nice Swan Records.
Stewart Copeland talks about the importance of drums in a documentary broadcasted by the BBC. He circles back to New Orleans to find the origins of percussion in popular music. He puts the inventor of the drum set - and thereby the groove, DD Chandler, in the spotlights. And he shoots the breeze with fellow drummers Stanton Moore, John Densmore, Chad Smith, Taylor Hawkins, Bobbye Hall, Sheila E., and Stephen Morris.
Another archival Phish release is available for streaming and download: 11/27/96 Key Arena, Seattle, WA:
On November 27, 1996 Phish played the Key Arena in downtown Seattle, WA – a futuristic multi-purpose arena located below the Space Needle in the Seattle Center. The venue opened during the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair and was renovated into the Seattle Center Coliseum (renamed Key Arena in 1993), longtime home to the Seattle SuperSonics NBA team. Phish was near the end of a 35-date national tour following the release of their sixth studio album, Billy Breathes and the transformative Halloween Remain in Light show. The band spent two days leading up to this show jamming at Seattle’s Stepping Stone Studios, providing the launching pad for a fall ’96 barnburner. It was the night before Thanksgiving and local hero Jimi Hendrix’s birthday, which gave this show an added twist. Seattle ’96 was packed with highlights including the Julius > My Friend My Friend > Ya Mar opening sequence, Chalk Dust Torture, and an inspired Free > Theme From The Bottom – the first pairing of those two songs off the new album. Bold As Love closed the set and began the Hendrix tribute that spanned the rest of the show as Trey wished Jimi a happy birthday.
Canadian power pop singer and multi-instrumentalist Bill Majoros shares two more tracks from his new album Starlight Serenade by his project The Foreign Films, scheduled for release on July 30. All The Love You Give and Echoes Of The Heart are both sunnyside up, psych-tinged songs, showcasing Majoros' knack for melody and multi-layered music. As a composer he has found his niche, coming up with catchy choruses and smart hooks that sound familiar but fresh. He is already a big name in the inner circle of music geeks and, if there is any justice left in the business, wider recognition could be just around the corner.
Guitarist Zeno Jones and drummer Rodney B. of Louisville, KY based duo Cold Beverage play stripped down, blues-drenched rock 'n' roll that is so rough that it will have the unitiated running for the hills. Hot Wax, their new album takes the approach of the Black Keys and The Sideshow Tragedy to the next level, making the distorted guitar howl like it was recorded in a runaway cement mixer, plus the drum fills are bouncing off the walls it is a miracle they are still standing. The needles are so deep in the red that a power outage is barely avoided.
They don't sing, they holler. Cold Beverage is adamant to leave no room for other things to worry about, except having a good time while they working hard to get the demons out of their system. If the neighbours don't come knocking on the door to complain, turn it up some more.
For those with a craving for some top shelf folk-tinged Americana meets indie rock music, the debut album by Tucson, AZ quartet Soda Sun is an essential addition to their collection. On Stay Here melancholy and recently found happiness are playing catch. Songwriter Johnny Goraj makes every word count and the ringing of Johny Vargas' guitar offers comfort. Derek Cerretani (bass) and David Foley (drums) keep it all together, weaving a gentle swaying backdrop.
Setting up shop in their home studio they captured the songs on a 35-year-old reel-to-reel 8-Track Tascam 388, a cherished piece of recording equipment with superb specs. This is a band that allows the songs to breathe. There won't be many albums where 12th Century German mysticist St. Hildegard of Bingen rubs shoulders with a song about Junkies or looks back on growing up in South Dakota (Horse and Home). The common ground on Stay Here is that each song is a story that needs to be told. Serious listeners with an open mind might even learn something.
French dark wave band Deleyaman have posted the dates for their "Inland" tour. They will play eight shows in July and August, all within the borders of France.
Live dates:The Slasher 2021 is avant-garde piece of music, created by Senga Etna, a collaboration between Edward Capel, Johnny Dowd, Brian Wilson, Agnes De Haan, and Rik van Iersel. The latter also made the animated video. It is a mix of free jazz, musique concrète and a bit of the German Schlager Schön ist es auf der Welt zu sein, a cheesy song that was a big hit for Roy Black and child prodigy Anita in 1971.
