Orchestra-enhanced versions of rock and other forms of popular versions are hit and miss. There is the truly awful - The Andrew Oldham Orchestra with The Rolling Stones Songbook, the close but no cigar - Deep Purple's - Concerto For Group And Orchestra, and the pretty good - Metallica w/ The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra's – S&M (but avoid the lame and superfluous S&M2). But now there is a new kid in town that gets it right all the way through: The Aristocrats With Primuz Chamber Orchestra.
The Aristocrats might well the world's finest hard-hitting prog jazz fusion trio right now, with an open ear and mind plus a wicked sense of humour. When they ran across a video of the Polish Primuz Chamber Orchestra performing Culture Clash they were pleasantly surprised. They got in touch with composer/arranger Wojtek Lemański and one thing let to another. They send over nine remixed version from their back catalog and Lemański worked his magic with the string arrangments. Conductor Łukasz Błaszczyk ran a tight ship, but he also gave some leeway to the orchestra when the opportunity to do so arose.
There are no signs of one of the parties trying to get the upper hand. It is a full-on true (long-distance) collaboration. The Aristocrats With Primuz Chamber Orchestra sounds like it was recorded by all parties in the same room. Long-time followers of the band will find that this not just a fresh coat of paint for the material, but an expansion and reinvention of the music that will change listening to the originals forever.
The prospects for an actual concert by both parties are pretty daunting, both logistically and financially, but when the trio plays in Europe in again - 2023 maybe? - it could happen if Poland is part of the tour schedule again.
The Aristocrats With Primuz Chamber Orchestra is released via the band's own label. Buy it from their website. Release date; June 3rd (CD, digital) and July 1st (2LP via Diggers Factory.
