Katie Lass: Hypnopomp

Detroit art-rock artist Katie Lass goes all out with sounds and textures on her debut album Hypnopomp, throwing out all of the usual "proper" recording tricks and familiar construction bricks of a song out of the window. Combining elements of dream pop, shoegaze, noise and psych rock she has constructed a truly unique collection of songs. Imagine Syd Barrett attending a party thrown by the cast of Alice in Wonderland, with the members Soft Machine and Can pretty near the top of the guest list.

Twinkling keyboards are teaming up with Pixies-alike atonal surf guitar. There is a lot of echo and reverb, and bleeding of the tracks is welcomed an not corrected by Warren Defever of Third Man Mastering who rose to the challenge to keep all the weirdness intact. Carefully sidestepping the pitfalls marked "self-indulgence" and "art-for-art's sake", Lass has made an album that both challenges and invites the listener to go in at the deep end and explore an alternate universe, wherein a sound can have a colour, and a colour can emanate a sound.

Johnny Dowd: Shook Up

Alt-country maverick Johnny Dowd is not a fan of Holidays, but that did not stop him to release a special treat for Halloween that also serves as a tribute to Jerry Lee Lewis, the recently deceased wild man of rock 'n' roll.

Shook Up was recorded in a single take. It moves slowly, almost like a dirge. With Jif Dowd laying down a bassic drum part whereupon can let his words wander - the Kama Sutra as a ways of escape from in a world in tatters, family gatherings providing some kind of safety, eating home fries for breakfat and much, much more, tied together by quoting two classics in the chorus: "I'm all shook up, I'm all shook up // Goodness gracious, great balls of fire".

The Fierce & The Dead: "Photogenic Love" video

English experimentalist quartet The Fierce & The Dead have made a video for their latest single, Photogenic Love: "Now that they have added vocals to their mix all bets of where they may go next are off. Kev Feazey even sounds a bit Jarvis Cocker in his phrasing now, but long time fans can rest assured when they unleash a barrage of guitars, bearing their signature avant-rock that has made them famous - or loved and cherished at least - in music geeks circles".

Tim O'Connell: On Broadway

Songwriter Tim O'Connell has released On Broadway, the first of three albums telling the tale of Terry, a songwriter from West Texas who dreams to make it big and heads to Nashville in the early 1970. It has quite a few of autobiographical elements - O'Connell lives in Music City, USA and wrote songs for a wealth of country artists, including one for Johnny Cash. As was made clear on last year's Silent Nights, his vocals are a bit flat and reaching high notes isn't happening. As a storyteller however, he can stand up against pretty much anyone in his chosen field.

On Broadway is a country album (Write 'em, Cowboy, Best Day Ever), branching out to the Great American Songbook and the Big Band Era swing (Down Around Readyville, Hot Licks, Warm Beer, Cold Food). On this first album of the projected trilogy protagonist Terry is on the way up, but changes are that trouble lies ahead on the next one.

Kivanc Kilicer: "Winter" video

Turkish Gothic rock musician Kivanc Kilicer has made a video for his version of Antonio Vivaldi's Winter: "Using the basis of the strings, he stacked layer upon layer of horns, electric guitars, and orchestral drums to turn the Baroque composition into a progressive, symphonic rock anthem. A jaw dropping reinterpretation that needs to be played loud".

Midnight Rodeo: The Big Melt

Electric Pets
photo: Jack Stoddart

The members Nottingham psych-pop sextet Midnight Rodeo must have been exposed to a lot Jefferson Airplane and Pink Floyd records at an impressionable age. Their new single The Big Melt must have made to the 21st Century by hitching a ride with the Tardis. Propelled by two slightly distorted guitars singer Maddy Chamberlain leads the way on a late night stroll, telling off strangers that get in her way.

The Bullfight & Guests: Some Divine Gift

Rotterdam based folk noir band The Bullfight have raised the bar once again with their new album Some Divine Gift: nine spoken word pieces accompanied by intricate soundscapes, rock and jazzy excursions written by the band's resident versatile composer Thomas van Vliet. For their previous album Eggs & Marrowbone the band invited artists to illustrate the songs, an excellent idea that is once more part of the package, but they did not stop there.Barry Hay (of Golden Earring fame), Spinvis, David Boulter (Tindersticks), Alex Roeka, Daisy Cools, Henry Rollins, and Mark Ritsema all said yes when they got the call to lend their voices to a piece.

Spoken word and poetry are not necessarily easy on the ears. In most of popular music the words are an afterthought, preferably with a catchy refrain. On Some Divine Gift it is the other way round, with the music as a vessel for the thoughts and musings of the man or woman at the microphone. Hitting the ground running with Barry Hay solemnly working his way through Ozymandias, the fabled sonnet written by Percy Bysshe Shelley in 1818, it instantly becomes clear that this an album that deserved undivided attention. Dutch experimental lo-fi artist Spinvis is next with the sad De Ogen Van de Bruid - he will likely reconsider his own shoestring budget approach after recording with such a wealth of accomplished musicians.

William William Rodgers: The Slippery Slide

William William Rodgers

English folk artist William William Rodgers dives into orchestral, luscious pop on his new single, The Slippery Slide, a track from his forthcoming Four Nights at the Hotel Rodgers EP. Singing about getting out of a bind only to be drawn into it again, it is a perpetuum mobile of hope and giving in. Rodgers' way with words and ironic outlook on life are presented on a bedding of '70s production values, complete with a singalong part and rather smart violin touches. Imagine Nick Drake in a cheerful mood being applauded by Al Stewart.

Cozy Slippers: Cozy Slippers

Cozy Slippers

Seattle based jangling, indie rock trio Cozy Slippers bring back the swing of the Paisley Underground on their self-titled debut album. Their music offers them a welcome break from their day jobs - Barbara Barrilleaux is a strategic advisor for the Brooks Running, Sara Engel is a senior at FinancialForce, and Steven Skelton is an estate planner and tax attorney, all positions that are a far cry from exactly rock 'n' roll, but they won't get screwed by the music industry.

A sense of melancholy is present in most of the tracks. They fully realize that shit will happen, no matter what (I Can't Keep You Safe) and the anxiety that popped up in their teenage years is still there (Nobody Knows Me, Anyhow, Bee Sting). Holding on to their loved ones offers some respite (Be Alone With Me) and of course this being a Seattle band they sing about rain (No Room For the Sun). It is tempting to label this album as an escapist mid-life effort, but there is nothing wrong with chasing your dreams.

Aret Madilian: The Abbey Project

photo: Renaud de Foville

Aret Madilian of French-American dark wave band Deleyaman was invited to compose the music for the Étonnantes Abbayes de Normandie event during the cultural week from October 26 to November 1, 2022. It seems a contradiction to provide the soundtrack for something that celebrates silence, but Madilian found a way around that, writing 10 mostly instrumental, neo-classical excursions, all of them named after stars.

With a prominent role for Armenian reed instruments - duduk, tavshevi, plul - all played by Artyom Minasyan - and the Indian flute bansuri played by Pierre Baillot the music moves quietly. Each note counts and it evolves into something deeper after each listen. It is an exhibition of his composing agility to create a suite of songs that can conjure up the experience of walking among the ruins of ancient buildings from the comfort of your own home.

Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity. So it's like, just take advantage of these last few years because none of this is ever going to happen again. It's Karma It's Cool: Old Bones

English neo-psychedelic power pop quartet It's Karma It's Cool have released Old Bones, the second of six standalone singles that will see the light of day over a three month period. It is a melancholic song - with a bit of glam rock courtesy of guitarist Martyn Bewick - about getting older and coping with disappointments. Following self-appointed gurus led to nothing, because the pain is still here. Maybe someday the happy days will make a comeback. "Cheerleaders // Of the masquerade // We take a bitter pill // With a sweet champagne // And pray those days // Roll round again // Suzanne, old bones do ache me".

The Fierce & The Dead:: Photogenic Love

Ronan Conroy: The Slow Death of the LoveMyth

Ronan Conroy

For his new album The Slow Death of the LoveMyth NYC based singer-songwriter Ronan Conroy revived a couple of songs that were recorded between July 2013 and September 2017 @ Capture Sound Studios. It is a collection dark post-punk tracks, that point towards the 2014 album Discontent the 2017 EP Blood Dread.

There is something quite different too. He invited three of his favourite female vocalists to sing on some of the tracks and Julie Dicterow, Shannon Brown and Susan Hwang rose to the occasion, adding colour and a little light to overall vibe of a track. It is a belated thanks to them - they have inspired him and worked with him in the past. With his usual go-to musicians - Charlie Nieland playing pretty much every instrument and Justin Wierbonski on drums - Conroy can rely on his musical safety net when he explores the darker side of his emotions.

Sagittaire: The Lagniappe Sessions @ Aquarium Drunkard

Sagittaire, the project of San Fransisco based singer-songwriter Ivan Mairesse, recorded two covers for Aquarium Drunkard's The Lagniappe Sessions: The Necessaries's More Real (MP3) and Leslie Winer's John Says (MP3). About that last track:

The tone of the voice and how it blended into the backing track surprised me, and the combination of her delivery, on-screen look, and production choices defied categorization. Like Arthur Russell, her output was not widely embraced immediately, possibly because it was so forward-looking. I continue to revisit her work and share it with others whenever I get the chance.

John Cale: Story of Blood (feat. Weyes Blood); new album "Mercy" in January

John Cale and Weyes Blood, nom-de-plume of American singer Natalie Laura Mering, have joined forces for a collaborative single. Cale has dug deep into his bag of sonic tricks and Mering added layers of mesmerizing vocals. Starting out as a gentle piano ballad the track explores both the back roads and the mainstream guise of art-rock and minimalist electronics. This bodes well for the eagerly awaited new album Mercy (out on January 20, 2023 on Double Six / Domino) and the upcoming live shows.

The Furious Bongos: Halloween tour-ette dates

The Furious Bongos are a bunch of pro's who love the music of Frank Zappa, so every now and then they find the time to get on stage and have fun with his music:

As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital.

Combo Qazam: Ghost Interior

Combo Qazam

Dutch post-punk/math-rock band Combo Qazam go for repetitive, Krautrock inspired songs on their second album, Ghost Interior. This less-is-more approach pays off in spades. By going to the core and shaving off most of the trimmings - sometimes by getting rid of a single chord - they create a hypnotic flow - especially in the instrumentals - that is a little claustrophic, but catchy. Painting yourself in a corner is considered to be a bad idea, but Ab Al-Tamimi, Gino Miniutti, Arno Breuer and Stefan Breuer are blessed with seemingly limitless ideas to work within self-imposed boundaries.

Ghost Interior is an album that needs to be heard in full, in order to fully appreciate the recurring themes and get sucked into their musical universe. They name bands like Wire and Can as major influences, but there are nods to Sonic Youth and the Residents too. Don't be surprised when the quirky Sci-Fi excursion Ships or the hectic Crisis turn up in a movie to augment the mess the main character has to deal during that particular scene.

Ecstatic International: Ecstatic International

Ecstatic International

What if a bunch of musicians would throw all the danceable elements of post-punk, acid house, afrobeat and psychedelic-tinged New Wave together, as a means to fill the dance floor with skewed rhythms and lyrics that dig a little deeper than a run-of-the-mill love song? Washington based quintet Ecstatic International did exactly that and it sounds as if the 80s have never ended.

Founded by guitarist G. L. Jaguar (Priests) and drummer Laura Harris (Ex Hex) they reached out to Nikhil Raol, Anno and Jacky Cougar Abok to write and record their self-titled EP, a treasure trove of hectic beats, licks and shimmering synths. The rough parts of the US capital are not a safe place to grow up in and looking over one's shoulder pretty much all of time is part of everyday life. And while they pull no punches pointing out the bad elements, the overall mood is optimistic in a tried-and-true dance on a volcano fashion.

John Cale: working on a new album + show in Prague

A new John Cale album will see the light of day in 2023. He talked to Mojo Magazine. He was ready to go in 2020 and then the pandemic happened:

I was heading into the cycle of release, press, tour – the table was set! At first, I thought, OK, lockdown might be a good time to rest since I’d been going non-stop for over five years. My studio was in a shambles, since a full remodel was planned while my band and I were to be on tour – nearly every piece of gear was locked away in a pile of rubble. I found lockdown was going to be extra-brutal without the ability to create from home. I just felt lost. And I hate sitting still.

Babaux and The Peacemakers: Lucky 13

Babaux and The Peacemakers

Babaux and The Peacemakers proof that is hard to beat playing live when recording roots music. Lucky 13 captures four musicians from the Colorado scene locking in as one in the Brightside Studio in Denver. Cristian Basso's gravelly voice is a perfect fit for melancholic storytelling. It his 13th album since he started out as a musician - hence the album's title and although the dreams of making it big are long gone, he knows that he is catering to a loyal audience that keeps him on the road.

Backed by Eric Martinez: guitar, Alana Velvis (drums) and Niek Velvis (bass) he sounds totally at ease. The open road is the one mistress he can't get away from. No matter the craving for settling down, he knows he will leave once more (Wide Open Horizon, Bye Bye To You). Basso has embraced his restlessnes as a given and he taps into it to write yet another soulful blues song.

Native Sun: When She

NYC rockers Native Sun are in a flux on their latest single, When She. One time there was a lady they loved dearly in their life, and the next "poof", she's gone. It is subject that has been covered countless times, but the hurt is almost palpable. Changes are that they listened to a lot of Oasis when they recorded it, with muscular machismo rock playing catch with the poppy melody. The video was directed by Conor Cunningham.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis: extra show in Melbourne

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have added an extra show in Melbourne (11/30) to their Australian tour, promoting their latest album Carnage.

Librarians With Hickeys: Handclaps & Tambourines

Power pop quartet Librarians With Hickeys are gravitating towards psychedelic rock on their new album Handclaps & Tambourines, using plenty of echo on the vocals and bringing the bass and drums to the front of the mix. Wearing their emotions on their sleeves (plenty of aching heartbreak) and delving into their extensive knowledge of their peers and heroes, they came up with a dozen instantly hummable songs that sound both familiar and fresh.

As their band name suggests, they don't stick to one genre. They are open to Canterbury scene tinged folk (Last Days Of Summer), a touch of glam (Lady Overdrive) and the blatantly commercial appeal of bands like the Monkees (When We Were Young). Handclaps & Tambourines is a sunny-side up album, where every shadow of doubt or worry is being chased away with a jubilant, jangling guitar part.

Winter: What Kind of Blue Are You?

LA based musician Samira Winter grew up in Boston and some of the weirdness of bands like the Pixies can be found on her What Kind of Blue Are You? Cherry-picking elements of genres like shoegaze and dream-pop, she is on the fence between darkness and light, creating a study of contrasts between gentle vocals and wavering, rough-around-the-edges music, that requires a pair of decent headphones to fully appreciate the stereo trickery.

She pulls the listener in into her musical world, a bewildering and beguiling game of a push and pull that will require many listens to get to the gist of it. What Kind of Blue Are You? is an album without definite answers, but that is irrelevant for this journey to her inner self. Feel free to make sense of it, or better yet, surrender to the flow, and be intrigued and pleasantly surprised.

If you can play live and support yourself, it's one of the few ways you're going to actually get paid in this business these days.

Crossword Smiles: "The Girl With A Penchant For Yellow" video

Crossword Smiles have made a video for The Girl With A Penchant For Yellow a track from their PPressed & Ironed album: "[They] have been part of the scene in Michigan for years. Curless made waves with Your Gracious Host and Saam is currently the bass player for The Hangabouts and Curless's backing band The 46%. They have spent many night in bars ,discussing the bands and the songs they like, culminating in the classic "'What if we did something together?" question. That's not unusual for musicians (or music lovers for that matter), but making a commitment to actually sit down and create, is something else. With Pressed & Ironed they have put their money where their mouth is".

Katie Lass: Shadow on the Shoreline

Detroit art-rock artist Katie Lass has released Shadow on the Shoreline, another single from her forthcoming debut album, Hypnopomp. Her wavering guitar tone will strike a chord with fans of shoegaze and dream-pop, using plenty of reverb and echo, and clashing chords. She is a sonic explorer, relying on her intuition and letting the music guide her, weaving a tapestry for her soft-spoken vocals.

Happy accidents are welcomed with open arms. Lass doesn't give a fuck about rules or pleasing the listener, which is very rare indeed. A cult legend in the making, whose influence will be far greater than her sales figures.

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis: Earthlings

Watch Nick Cave & Warren Ellis perform Earthlings, an outtake of the This Much I Know To Be True documentary. The song was originally recorded during the sessions for the Ghosteen album in 2018, but it did not make the cut. It turned up B-Sides & Rarities Part II in 2021.

The studio version is now available as an - expensive - 7" picture disc via Cave Things:

Earthlings is the missing link that binds Ghosteen together. A lovely song that just got away. Yet another entry into the mighty and mysterious work “The Secret Life of Children".

Johnny Dowd: Porchfest Live Show

photo: Jyl Dowd

Johnny Dowd has released a recording of the full set he played @ Porchfest in his hometown Ithaca, NY, on September 25 this year. He played a couple of long time favourites, like God Created Woman and the murder ballad First There Was a Funeral, songs from his latest album Homemade Pie (Silk Scarf, Call Me the Wind) and a bunch of new stuff, all of them bearing his signature black humour twist. Some of those songs might end up on the new album he is recording in Memphis with Amy LaVere and Will Sexton.

No edits, no clean-ups, some false starts, a few wisecracks, no separate tracks for that matter. This is as close as you'll get to having Johnny playing in the comfort of your own home.
