What if a bunch of musicians would throw all the danceable elements of post-punk, acid house, afrobeat and psychedelic-tinged New Wave together, as a means to fill the dance floor with skewed rhythms and lyrics that dig a little deeper than a run-of-the-mill love song? Washington based quintet Ecstatic International did exactly that and it sounds as if the 80s have never ended.
Founded by guitarist G. L. Jaguar (Priests) and drummer Laura Harris (Ex Hex) they reached out to Nikhil Raol, Anno and Jacky Cougar Abok to write and record their self-titled EP, a treasure trove of hectic beats, licks and shimmering synths. The rough parts of the US capital are not a safe place to grow up in and looking over one's shoulder pretty much all of time is part of everyday life. And while they pull no punches pointing out the bad elements, the overall mood is optimistic in a tried-and-true dance on a volcano fashion.
