Singer and guitarist John McCabe never managed to get on the train heading for college rock stations appreciation. Which is odd, because he sounds an awful lot like R.E.M.. singer Michael Stipe and his songs also cover the middle ground between Americana and jangling indie. The new compilation Somehow Or Another contains the EPS and singles he released since 2017 and serves as a belated recognition of his output.
McCabe is an observer, donning the position of an outsider looking in, with his voice and guitar as the key ingredients for his storytelling. There is a sense of loneliness permeating through the tracks (Bus Stop, St. Luke's, Used To Say), but he also rocks out when the mood strikes him (Buckled, Brake Parts). This release may not be his ticket to world domination, but it sure will get him the occasional date in slightly bigger venues than he is playing right now as a solo artist. As a member of Good at Rockets, he already managed to that and lightning might strike twice.
Somehow Or Another (2017-2022 EPs and singles compilation) is released via Subjangle (2CD, digital).
