Norwegian trumpeter and composer Nils Petter Molvær does not like to be stuck into one particular genre. He has explored jazz, ambient and classical, but also dipped his toes in breakbeats and electronics. On his latest album Certainty of Tides, he went for a mellow sound that digs deep, with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra having his back to create a modern day symphony. The six movements flow as a continuous piece that should be listened to as whole as Molvær adds accents and colour on top of the orchestra's sometimes almost abstract music.
Certainty of Tides is ambitious, but accessible. He has obviously been taking cues from arrangers like Gil Evans and changes are that both Chet Baker and Hans Zimmer were in the back of his mind when he wrote the pieces. It is very melodic, but with enough twists and turns to keep it safe from the mainstream bracket.
Certainty of Tides is released via via Modern Recordings (vinyl, CD, digital).
