When the members Cardiff based psychedelic band Soft Hearted Scientists were gearing up to record the tracks for what eventually became the Waltz Of The Weekend album, covid happened. After the pandemic had become a thing to be watched in the rearview mirror it took some time to find their bearings again. They finished it without getting crazy. The press and the fans loved it, but one thing was missing: a vinyl release. Yes, the CD version had enough room for what is basically an old school double album, but it is just not the same.
The owners of niche label and keepers of the flame for psychedelic and adjacent genres on the British isles Fruits de Mer Records are going to fix that with an expanded 3LP set. It features the original album spread over 4 sides and 2 more with on dedicated to three inventive remixes (Rode My Bike, What Grows Inside the Garden and The Sea Anemone Song) and one for a sprawling excursion of the album as a whole, a musical quilt courtesy of band member Nathan Hall.
Less is more does not apply in this case. It is more like that you can't have too much of a good thing, plus the reworkings offer a new perspective of the core album. One question remains: there are nine more tracks that can be reinvented as well, so is it too much to ask if there will a companion piece to this expanded reissue?
Waltz Of The Weekend is released via Fruits de Mer Records. Release date: February 27.
