What do you when half your band is not available for a while? Besides sulking or a spring cleaning, but the best option by gar is the make the most of it and come up with arrangements that will work for just a few musicians. Jade Trio is a side-project of New Hampshire based funky jazz sextet Andrew North & The Rangers, playing stripped down tunes. They recorded the four songs of their self-titled EP in one take in a single afternoon in the recital hall at the Concord Community Music School.
Jillian Rork (sax), Dale Grant (drums), and Andrew North (piano) were obviously having a ball in capturing the moment as if they were performing live before an appreciative audience, honouring the tight but loose spontaneity that takes years of practice to pull off. North can give way to his inner Page McConnell, with Rork acting the power trio's soloist, and Grant swinging and grinning while keeping all together with choice fills.
Jade Trio (Presented by Andrew North & The Rangers) is a self-released EP. Buy it from their website.
